The sixth season begins as Eric learns that Matt has lost his job at the hospital and is hoping that his pals can get him another one. Simon pressures Eric to let him get his driver's permit. Simon stands up for a bullied student only to have the boy tell him that he is going to shoot his tormentors. Annie's father shows up for a weekend visit that Eric forgot to tell his wife about and nearly everyone in the Camden household is too busy to spend time with the elderly man except Simon, who Eric had promised to take to the DMV to get his permit. Mary comes home with plans to stay and her appearance has everyone in the Camden household wondering what happened between her and Wilson. Annie happily welcomes her daughter's sudden arrival and even offers her the coveted apartment over the garage. Matt and Sarah try to end the rift between their fathers by seeking their mothers' help in convincing the holy men to put aside their differences that may jeopardize the young couple's wedding plans. Matt and Eric meet with Rabbi Glass (Richard Lewis) to discuss plans for the wedding and Eric learns that his role is smaller than he expected. Ruthie becomes a pen pal to a marine serving in the U.S. led campaign in Afghanistan and she shares her letters with her family, who soon learn of the serviceman's death after a helicopter crash.
