Release Notes

Across the Universe [Deluxe Version]: Release Notes: Muze
Composer: Elliot Goldenthal .Producers: Elliot Goldenthal; T-Bone Burnett; Teese Gohl; Josh Garza; Brandon Curtis; Benjamin Curtis.Engineers: Yohei Goto; Emile Kelman; Bryan Pugh; Vanessa Parr; Missy Webb; Jason Wormer; Adam Haggar; Halsey Quemere; Sheldon Yellowhair; Frank Filipetti; Stacy Parrish; Joel Iwataki; Mike Piersante; Steve McLaughlin; Brandon Mason; Lawrence Manchester; Ghian Wright.Audio Mixers: Joel Iwataki; Mike Piersante; Brandon Mason.Recording information: Brooklyn Recording, New York, NY; Legacy Recording, New York, NY; Manhattan Center, New York, NY; The Village, Los Angeles, CA.Author: Julie Taymor. As soundtracks to Beatles-inspired movies go, Across the Universe -- the companion piece to Julie Taymor's pseudo-psychedelic fantasmagoria extravaganza that tells the story of the '60s through the tunes of the Fab Four -- has bewilderingly gaudy moments, but it's not as appallingly tacky as Sgt. Pepper or as stuffy as All This and World War II. Still, Taymor's overly designed fantasia is at once too tasteful and too garish, which is an odd combination for an odd movie -- and something that may be more gripping onscreen than it is on record. Dana Fuchs furiously channels Melissa Etheridge (especially on "Helter Skelter") when her performance is isolated as music, although the biggest surprise is that Bono not only looks like a dead ringer for Robin Williams in the film, but he sounds a bit like him too, with overly earnest readings of "I Am the Walrus" and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Much of the rest slides by agreeably enough. Jim Sturgess has the same plainspoken delivery as Ewan MacGregor in Moulin Rouge, which helps in love songs from "All My Loving" to "Something" -- and he does a credible job on the rockabilly revamp of "I've Just Seen a Face" -- while Joe Cocker steals the show with his slinky, funky, spacy version of "Come Together." And, apart from Bono and Fuchs' too-strong soulful belting, nothing is distracting -- but the biggest strength of Across the Universe may be that, when considered in its entirety, it mainly whets the appetite for the original recordings. [The deluxe version of Across the Universe is a double-disc, 29-track set containing almost all of the songs featured in Taymor's film, all presented in the order they are in the film.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Excellent soundtrack but a few tracks missing!

Posted by: from Los Angeles on 12/06/2010I've been reading reviews about this deluxe edition and found that allegedly there are two versions. "The first version of the deluxe edition features 31 tracks - all of the vocal performances and one of the three instrumental tracks. This 31-track version is available solely at the Best Buy retail chain and in a digital version via iTunes. A second version of the deluxe edition is available at other retail outlets. The second version differs from the 31-track version in that it omits two tracks: "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?". The total time for these two missing tracks is 5 minutes." I was hoping since I purchased from Best Buy that I was getting the 31 track version but I got the 29 track version instead. Anyway, the CD is wonderful even without the additional tracks so no regrets!

Posted by: from on 07/06/2008I didn't really want to like this cd because I just feel like the original Beatles' songs were perfect as is. But, the movie was one of the best out that year, and when my daughter wanted the cd I have to admit that I enjoyed listening to it. My only criticism is that some of the female ballads come off a little too syrupy. But, other covers are great and overall it is an enjoyable cd!

Posted by: from Michigan on 04/28/2008I loved this movie and CD - make sure you watch the movie first. Part of the fun of it is hearing the songs for the first time. The score is beautiful and well thought out. It definitely captures the beatles original ideas but puts a new spin on it.

A Must Have Soundtrack!

Posted by: from Chester, VA on 04/20/2008This cd is a must have for anyone who has watched and loved Across the Universe! A definite new found appreciation for The Beatles after watching this movie and listening to this cd. I must have played Bono's version of "I am the Walrus" to the point of excess by now. Go out and buy it, you wont be disappointed!

Posted by: from Palm Desert, California on 04/13/2008If you didnt know that these songs where renditions of beatles songs it wouldent have matterd because the stars who remaid these songs makes it feel as if these songs where made spicifically for this movie and it goes above and beyond to make sure that it sound nothing like the originals. i have to admit i was never a beatles fan until i heard this cd the only disaponting thing about this cd is that they did not put "i want you/shes so heavy" a song in the movie that i belive was crucial to the film.

Beatles alive!

Posted by: from New Orleans on 02/10/2008In the movie, "All you need is love" is the last song, and for a moment, when Jude looks at Lucy, you can hear "She loves you, yeah, yeah yeah" before the song ends. I really liked the detail, but it's not in the song in the soundtrack. Besides that small thing, this record's awesome. C'mon, if you liked the movie, you should totally own this!
