Aliens: Colonial Marines - Collector's Edition - Xbox 360 (1 out of 2)
Admirable goal, painful execution

Posted by: from Seattle, WA on 03/29/2013I'll break my review into two parts - the game itself and the collector's edition swag. Game - I'm really torn on this. The game is cannon, so it's an official expansion of the Aliens universe and it takes steps in this direction that fans should enjoy. From a design perspective, Timegate (who did the actual single player campaign) did some great work with sound and level design and really captured the feel of the Aliens movie, giving players a sense "being there" that is awesome. But this isn't enough to overcome the failings of the game in other areas. The graphics were tuned down from what was seen in the E3 demonstration and look rather dated compared to other AA and AAA titles on the market nowadays. There are also a lot of little annoying graphical glitches that will grate on the eagle eyed out there. The AI is also pretty...hmm....horrible. Enemies take circuitous routes to you for no apparent reason, allies provide no covering fire to speak of and get hung up in doors and on obstacles often enough to illicit muttered swearing, and as you play through you'll find yourself shaking your head and laughing at just how dumb all of the AI are. Luckily, it's a short game (took me about 8 hours to complete), so if you don't mind taking it with a grain of salt, it can be a fun short dip into the Aliens universe for the hardcore fans. Now, the better part of the review - the collector's edition. To put it short, it's great. Plenty of shinies for the swag hounds and a couple cool bits for fans of the series. The figure is of decent construction, well molded and well painted while not being anything amazing. The patches and briefing packet lend a cool bit of nerdiness for movie fans. All in all, really happy with the bits of swag I now have on my office shelf. So it's a mixed bag. Hopefully Gearbox, who mismanaged this from the get-go, steps up to clean it up. Sadly, Timegate has basically gone under at this point, so they won't be fixing anything.

Posted by: from TX on 02/15/2013First off, I have only played about 2 hours worth of the campaign on Hardened Difficulty (2nd hardest). Haven't had a chance to test the multiplayer which is supposed to be the best part. I read most of the reviews slamming the game and I think they may be accurate depending on how you look at the game. If you look at it as a highly anticipated game in the Aliens universe that took 5 years to develop, then yes it is a let down. Nothing is ground breaking or close to amazing. If you look at it as another FPS, then it is an OK game thus far. Everything seems to be average at best, from the graphics to how it handles in game. The best attribute in my opinion is the audio. Somewhat creepy music that intensifies when you are about to enter an engagement. Seemingly accurate (to me) sounds effects, especially the iconic Pulse Rifle seen in the movies. Conclusion: Overall I'd give it a 6.5, MAYBE a 7 at best, if the multiplayer turns out to be fun. Yes, it's a let down but would be worth buying second hand or renting. *** I got the Collector's Edition (regretfully) and the added bonuses are "Meh" aside from the Powerloader Figurine, which is pretty cool and very detailed.
