Q&A with Nick Hexum of 311
Q: First record you ever bought?
A: Elvis' Gold. (I was 5.)
Q: First show you attended?
A: Sha Na Na. (I was 7. It was awesome!!)
Q: Musically, who were your biggest influences?
A: As you can see from the answers to questions 1 and 2, my first love was early rock 'n' roll. It had a punk, revolutionary energy to it. Then I heard The Clash when I was in 7th grade and they became my favorite band of all time. Bad Brains, Chili Peppers, The Smiths and Bob Marley also impacted me greatly.
Q: What are you listening to right now?
A: Brendan Benson, The Shins.
Q: What's the one thing you can't live without on the road?
A: My acoustic guitar.
Q: You're stranded on a deserted island. What three pieces of music do you have to have?
A: A grand piano, acoustic guitar and a drum kit (all waterproof!).
Q: What is the ultimate story of rock & roll excess?
A: Sid Vicious. He was a crap bass player, but his persona was so large he outshined Johnny Rotten's genius. The Filth and the Fury is a fantastic movie about the Pistols. Maybe the best rock doc I've seen.
Q: If you could own one car, it would be?
A: Mercedes E55 AMG.
Q: The one person I would like to spend five minutes with?
A: Elizabeth Vargas. Yeah, that's right! The ABC anchor. She's smart and lovely.
Q: You guys are from Omaha, Nebraska. Other than yourselves, can you tell us a few famous people who are from Omaha?
A: Malcolm X, Johnny Carson, Nick Nolte and, of course, Brando.
Q: Assuming you said Marlon Brando in question 10, what is your favorite non-Godfather Brando movie?
A: On the Waterfront.
Q: We hear so much about Omaha steaks. What is your favorite cut of steak and how do you like it done?
A: I like a medium rare rib eye. Either that or a filet with Béarnaise.
Q: Tell us a little about Nebraska Cornhusker football and their rabid fans.
A: People are nuts about it. There was almost a statewide mourning period when we had our first losing season in like 30 years. I'm a cheesehead myself. Both for the Packers and eating fine dairy products. I was born in Madison, WI.
