An Honest Review From Experienced Radar Owner1

**** Please note, I am NOT a rookie. I have owned many different radars over the years from multiple Cobras, Escort 8500 x50, and two Beltronics. I know and understand how they are supposed to work and know that they are not “cop Detectors”, and that they may not go off every time a cop is nearby.
With that said, here is an honest review:
The Beltronics V8 is just the new name for the 955 model. I used to own the Beltronics 940>> Now the V6 (that was absolute JUNK.)
I bought this radar from Best Buy right before a trip to Virginia. The day before I decided to drive around town and test it out. I have my radar plugged in with the smart cord and have it mounted just under the factory tint strip high on the windshield. I would keep my radar on the “pop mode” and on “autoscan”(which claimed to filter out false alerts).
While driving on the highway I came up on a known speed trap at a turnaround. There I saw a NYS Trooper with his car aimed directly down the road. (you can tell when they are just sitting there and when they are looking for speeders.) he was NOT shooting laser. The radar went off with the Ka band about 30 yards in front of him. There were no other cars around me.
Second, and many times on my trip to and from Virginia. I would see people pulled over by police. Sometimes they leave the radar on sometimes they don’t. it did not matter if they were on the opposite side of the highway or on the same side, the same thing happened, the radar would not go off until I was right ontop of them. The same would happen just driving down a very straight road, I passed a cop and the radar never went off until I could practically see the cop driving the car!
The Biggest thing about this radar is the CONSTANT false K alerts. It would just go off again and again.. Do you know those radar speed limit signs that shoot radar constantly? This radar could not even pick that up until I was right next to the sign. After a while I even moved the radar to the center of the windshield and nothing changed. I have had cheap $40 Cobras that performed better than this. DO NOT buy this radar or any other Beltronics product. It so far has been the absolute worst detector I have ever owned, and returned this to the store a week later.2 out of 2 found this review helpful.

I read all the reviews on this website and on other websites. They all claim this radar is good and performs well. The range of this radar truely sucks. My Passport X50 I bought 2 years ago works better then this junk. Don't buy this radar unless you want a ticket. It doesn't pick up the cop until its too late and you don't have time to slow down. I almost got 2 tickets within a day and a half of purchase. WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. THESE OTHER REVIEWS CAUSED ME TO SPEND $200 FOR JUNK. I'M RETURNING IT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!1 out of 1 found this review helpful.

This is a very solid unit for under 200.00. this is my third BEL detector and I would not buy another brand for the price I want to pay. If you are in the market for an inexpensive detector that won't let you down....this is it!!2 out of 2 found this review helpful.

Best bang for the buck!5

I've used many radar detectors in the past, all of them being from the cheaper side of things such as cobras, or a $80 whistler. I thought to my self, why do people hate these detectors so much, they seem to be working just fine. Of course that was until I decided to see what the fuss is all about. If I didn't like it or thought it was a waste of money I could always return it anyway.
So I opted for the V8 which is the same model # as the 955, just comes with the smart cord instead of the regular power cord. The smart cord lets you mute, or change the volume without having to reach up to the detector. Not a big deal but is still nice.
While unboxing you can already tell, your money is well spent on the quality of this detector. It doesn't feel like cheap light hollow plastic like the others do. Especially the Cobra I had.
Initial thoughts: I fell in love with the smart cord. Such a nice feature to be able to mute false alarm. I never thought there was much a difference, but the range on this thing compared to my past detectors is night and day. The Lidar detection is amazing, considering neither of my past detectors would even alert me of laser despite they advertised it would. I feel like I can drive with confidence rather than constantly looking over my shoulder or wondering if my detector is going to miss a detection and burn me.
BOTTOM LINE! DON'T GO CHEAP ON YOUR DETECTOR! START OFF AT THE 940 IF YOU WANT A LITTLE CHEAPER!13 out of 13 found this review helpful.

I believe this detector has paid itself off at least twice since I bought it (6wks). I was skeptical at first due to the fact I hadn't heard of this brand, but it soon proved to be a great product.5 out of 5 found this review helpful.

If you want to know when to prepare to pull over because you have been caught speeding then this is the product for you. I even sent it back to Bel to have them look it over and when it was sent back to me, weeks later, it was just as bad as when I sent it. Seriously, I can usually see the police before this detector alerts me. Take my advice spend more money and get a better product. Don't believe the other reviews. My guess is they were written by a Beltronics employee! If you do actually purchase this product please do not speed.16 out of 36 found this review helpful.

This is a great detector for the money. It will detect radar while giving you plenty of time to slow down. It has been an adjustment, because it's so good, it will go off and then stop and you won't see anything for a bit and think it was a false alert, then it will start again and lo and behold there's a cop.5 out of 5 found this review helpful.

I bought this radar detector and returned it within 20 days. Although it did save me once or twice the Ka band was terrible on it. Most cops use this band and you were almost on top of them before it would go off. Also the cop need to be facing you and the 360 degree detection was poor. Not a bad detector if cops only use K band in your area. False signals constantly. I am buying the Beltronics RX 65 for $20 more and 10X the performance. I recommend doing the same.6 out of 11 found this review helpful.
