Posted by: piccaname4me from Medford, OR on 04/15/2013This lens came on my 60D and I figured it would be a throw away lens like other kit lenses. I was very surprised at the image quality of this lens. In all honesty I do not use my 24-105 f4L hardly at all any more. Why? The 18-135 has a broader zoom range, colors are actually brighter, and I can tell ZERO difference in contrast and sharpness. The focus is fast, though not as fast as the USM on the 24-105, and it's waaaay lighter to carry around.
The down side is that the build quality is not on par with canons higher end USM and L lenses. It's plastic housing feels cheap and lacks the smooth action of the zoom and focusing of the higher end lenses. The auto focus is marginally more noisy than the USM motor. Is it worth an extra $400-700 to get those features? Not to me it isn't. This is a great lens for practical shooters whose final image is of more value than the minor conveniences that USM and L lenses give. This is the only time I've ever felt this way about a kit lens, VERY impressed!!

Excellent walking around lens

Posted by: D3R3K2 from Howell, MI on 11/18/2012This lens is an excellent walking around lens. It has a good zoom range and image quality. I'm a little disappointed by the cheap feel, but it doesn't impact it's performance.

Not a Pro-Lens...but I'm no longer a Pro

Posted by: fisherguy from Pilla, Vt on 09/29/2012It's not an L lens - that being said, It's a great walk around - In good light and with an f stop of greater than 6 the image is quite sharp...I was pleasantly surprised. If you shoot jpg - I found I had to adjust the sharpness and contrast on my t3i - color saturation is very good but not great - in RAW, no problem - PP is easy and not that necessary. Did a comparison with my 70-200 F4 IS L lens. It held up pretty well. Should you buy it ... that's a personal choice.
On an Crop sensor it's about a 30 - 220 comparable focal length - not bad for one lens.
Whatever choice you make, I wish you luck and hope this review helped.

Posted by: MidLifeDelight from Miami, FL on 07/13/2012After using multiple lenses to achieve acceptable results for years, I am fascinated with the versatility of this lens. For everyday nature photography, I don't have to carrry any other lens with me. Bye bye heavy back pack!

Great Standard Lense, Sharp and Vivid
5
Posted by: Bochok from Sylmar, Ca. on 12/04/2011This lense came from my 60D and after setting it up, took pictures and to my surprise it produced great quality sharp and vivid pictures.
Focussing is fast and precise, this in fact maybe the lense you will need for your standard needs. It gives you good distance and performs extremely well on a low light condition. Very nice portrait pictures was taken off this lense as well.
Overall I am very happy, Great Job Canon...

All the lens most users need...

Posted by: Duluthian from Duluth, MN on 11/21/2011Keeping in mind that this is not intended to be a top of the line Canon 'L" series lens, and also keeping in mind it is not intended for pro use, this is a very good lens. I own several top of the line lenses now (have had many others in the past) and I can honestly say this lens is far better than I expected. I purchased from Best Buy as a part of a 60D kit. At the time I figured I would give it a try and probably end up putting it on ebay. Well, after nine months I have found that the focal length combined with the sharpness of this lens make it a keeper. Unless you need the stronger build (not to say this isn't well built for a consumer lens), or you need the constant f2.8 aperture then this lens will work for most. I have made several large prints of photos taken with this lens that turned out way better than a kit lens should be able to produce.

Horrible kit lens
1
Posted by: Lothar from Waukesha, WI on 10/30/2011Simply put, this lens is not sharp. It was the kit lens on my 60D. 18-135mm seemed like an ideal range but unless I can get sharp photos this lens is useless. I bought a $100 50mm f/1.8 that blows this away for sharpness. I'm looking for a replacement walk-around lens and will sacrifice range for sharpness. I wished I had bought the 60D body only and bought a better lens from the onset.

Decent lens
4
Posted by: Keyan from on 03/17/2011This is a decent overall lens and a very nice lens if it comes in a kit such as with the 60D. It's a good "walk around" lens as it is both somewhat compact and light with a good amount of zoom, going from 18mm to 135. While it's not an "L" series lens and the elitists will go on about their bag of $2000 3 pound lenses, for the average amateur (like myself) this lens is good and can cover a wide range of scenarios making it great when you are walking around and just taking snapshots of things.

All around lens

Posted by: InventoryTroll from Jerome, ID on 10/11/2010This is a great lens to have on a camera at all times. Specialty lenses like telephoto, macro and wide angle have their place but this lens is great for 90% of the pictures you will take. It comes standard with the 60D (smart choice canon!) but if you are looking for an all around lens at a good value you can’t go wrong here. Image Stabilizing works very well and have kept my panning shots very crisp. And with an f/3.5-5.6 you can capture great images in very low light.
