Everything I wanted in an upgrade from the Mark II

Posted by: from canfield, oh on 05/17/2013Fav difference is the SD card as backup to Compact Flash. Welcomed the extra focus points vs. the II as well as many other features I haven't even put to use yet. Same battery as Mark II which is a plus but needed a new battery grip. No regrets in this purchase!!

Excellent camera for video and photography.

Posted by: from Nashville, TN on 05/17/2013I had reservations of buying this camera. I am classically a Nikon shooter and finally decided to make the switch once the latest firmware update was released. After this update Nikon just did not have a single advantage in the video range that made it worth sticking with. I have zero regrets. This truly is a fantastic camera. From the video quality to the inclusion of headphone monitoring, it does everything i need it to do for a run and gun rig. Yes the Audio pre-amps hiss and there is still a bit of rolling shutter, but for a run and gun rig this size the quality is sufficient. Also it's one of the best stills cameras that's ever been made so there's that too.

Easy to use, for an expert.

Posted by: from Orlando on 05/10/2013For the price, their really is no other choice. You could spend less and get the Nikon D800 and it's 36 Megapixels but it has poor low light performance in comparison to this camera. Truth is, I'd be okay using either camera, if I were invisible. Who really wants to be seen using a Nikon? It's just not taken seriously enough for my tastes. Nikon is a small company with clever engineers, but they have a ways to before they catch up reputation wise with the behemoth known as Canon. Likewise, Canon could do much to improve their engineering depth. I'd go so far as to say that many of their lens offering, are nothing short of a bad joke.

    Amazing Pro camera!

Posted by: from San Francisco, CA on 05/10/2013Being a semi-professional photographer, I appreciate good quality images along with expert focusing and camera durability. The Canon 5DMk3 has it all! I upgraded from a Canon 7D which is a great camera. I was going to get the MkII, but just didn't like it's 9-point AF, old-style video functions, and it had been quite a while without an upgrade. When the 5DMk3 was announced, I preordered it from BestBuy immediately! This is the camera we've all been waiting for. Since this camera was released, however, Canon released the 6D. I think most people will be decided between the 6D an 5DMk3. The differences are simple. The image quality/resolution/processing is nearly identical. The 6D has a slightly smaller body, SDXC-only, 11-point AF, and built-in GPS. The 5DMk3 is slightly more durable, has dual memory card slots (SDXC & CF), 61-point AF (HUGE advantage), and shoots 6fps. I think any semi-pro photographer would be just fine with either of this wonderful bodies. Keep in mind that camera bodies are like cars... the second you drive them off the lot, they depreciated. Lenses, on the other hand, you can have for years and sell them for hardly any less, or sometimes even more. My point is - invest the REAL money in glass!

    What more could you want!

Posted by: from Arden, NC on 05/10/2013Coming from an EOS 1D MkIII, i was unsure about going full frame. Never have i regreted the decision. This is my new go to camera. It will take a little while to learn the new Canon menu Scheme (compared to the 1D). Excellent autofocus and incredible picture quality at High ISO. FOr the money, this camera is not for the beginner. However if you like to get the camera out of AUTO mode and learn to take better pics, this is the one for you.

    The best camera I own.

Posted by: from chambersburg, pa on 04/29/2013I did a ton of research on my next camera, weighing features and price. Talking with other users that use a camera both professionally and as a hobby, I decided on this because of the focusing upgrade and larger screen. I shoot wedding, portraits and some commercial product. This camera has performed even better than I thought it would. Image quality is amazing and photo editing seems much easier with these large raw files. What was important to me was the feel of the camera, awesome tactile feel, non-slip, being able to customize setting, menus that make sence, low noise at high iso.

Excellent camera for professional and casual users
    5
Posted by: from Austin, TX on 04/26/2013I upgraded to the 5D Mark III about a month ago. I spent a year shooting with a Canon T3i. For my review I'll focus on my experience of going from my entry level camera to the more professional Mark III. I mostly shoot in low light and shoot in bursts of 5-10 shots. So the most important changes for me were the sensor and speed of writing to my memory cards. The sensor is amazing! I can confidently shoot in low light at 6400 ISO. On the T3i i started getting noise at 3200 and by 6400 it was really visible. On the Mark III this is not an issue. I did some shooting at 8000 ISO and the noise was still pretty low at that level. The other most important change is changing to a faster body and writing to compact flash. With the T3i I could wait up to 30 seconds for a series of shots to write to the SD card. With the Mark III I can shoot as fast as i want and the images are written to the compact flash card in a couple of seconds. The major benefit of this is that i'm not stuck with a flashing 'busy' as I wait and miss shooting opportunities. This is the camera for shooting fast in low light. Another nice feature is the silent shooting mode. It's not silent, but it is definitely a softer and quieter sound. It's also very well made. You can feel the quality. The small back lit screen is nice to see your settings in the dark without blinding yourself with the large LCD. If i had to pick some negatives, I would only really mention the weight and large number of features. It's pretty heavy. Doesn't really bother me, but I'm sure some might find it a bit cumbersome. Or if you have small hands, it might cause some issues. But try it out in the store, see how you like it. As for features, there are a ton! This isn't really a negative, except that you need to expect quite a bit of time to learn them all.
