Just not up for the job.

Posted by: from Reno, NV on 01/13/2011I recently upgraded from a Wireless G router to a Wireless N router and bought this USB card to increase my local LAN connection speed. After a painless install. I plugged the card into my computer and connected to my network. The connectivity was solid, however at a disappointing steady 29 Mbps. My old Wireless G card always stayed at a constant 54Mbps. (maximum for Wireless G) Bottom line: The internal antenna just isn't good enough to get a good connection. However, The products I do recommend are the Motorola Router, which I am using. And the Netgear Desktop card with external antenna.

To Be or Not To Be

Posted by: from Miami, FL on 11/09/2010I love DLink products but I had some difficulties installing this wireless on a Windows 7 computer. I wish that DLink would fix the software, but I noticed that the software had some permission issues when setting up a computer with multiple user's. It could be a Windows bug, but for the money I paid, DLink should enable me to always be connected. In some cases I am connected only to loose connecting shortly. Then they're are days that nothing will go wrong until the next time I boot up. So overall the product is nice but the software needs major improvement. A wifi should catch connection as soon as it is turned on, not take so long to connect. Windows 7 user's beware and do your homework. Right now I am using a cheap generic brand and get better results.

    Should've been an easy setup..

Posted by: from Boston on 03/19/2010I originally purchased this item in tandem with the D-Link Wireless-N Router with 4-Port Switch (which was a breeze to install and set up). The computer with the router was simply over the other side of the wall in another room than the one with the adapter, so distance should never have factored in. However, I spent a good 2 hours on the phone with D-Link technical support trying to get this adapter to work. It refused to connect to our wireless network even when receiving a signal at full strength from it. Tech support and I exhausted a long string of tests, re-installations, reconfiguring of my computer settings, reconfiguring of the router settings on the other computer, and if-all-else-fails reboots. Eventually I was able to connect to the network, but it was while D-Link had put me on hold again and it seemed to be merely luck that connected me. The recommendation from a trusted friend and the description of the product gave me the impression this ought to have been an easy installation. However now that it's properly installed, it has yet to drop the signal or cause any more issues after almost a month.

    Inconsistent connection speeds
    1
Posted by: from San Diego on 01/12/2010I purchased this product hoping to get a wireless access point for my desktop that I could move to get the best signal. I have been trying to get a consistant signal for the past three days and it hasn't moved from the 80% signal that D-Link's software says that it is receiving (windows gives it a poor rating). I have been on the phone with tech support all day and the finally told me to return it. I tried everything they requested from a fixed DNS address to a different computer. I used the Windows XP wireless software and D-Links software and got different results. I would get the right speed but it would keep reseting, then I would get it to stop reseting but the speed would be sporadic from 2000kbps to 280kbps. Whrere one setting was right the other was wrong. I was using a D-Link router and that is why I bought the DWA-130 so I would have the same standards. I personally think this product was poorly designed (not the looks) and it looks like others do to by the other reviews. Do no buy unless you want a headache.

    Satisfied so far!

Posted by: from Anderson, SC on 01/09/2010Very happy with this purchase so far. Very quick and easy to set up. Reasonable price compared to other similar products (I got mine on Black Friday too for 19.99 which was an even more excellent deal!) Picks up signal great and has excellent range. I also love the included cradle attatchment which allows you to move it around for better reception. I bought this to connect my desktop computer in the back room and it seems to pick the signal up better than my laptop (with built in wireless) does in that room.

Posted by: from Cincinnati, OH on 01/06/2010Works great, and can't beat it for the price. Picked this up for $19.99 on Black Friday. Particularly nice is the weighted USB cradle so you can place it securely on your desk for better reception.

    Does Not Hold Up!
    2
Posted by: from Marietta, GA on 09/15/2009My husband bought us each one of these about a year ago. At first they were okay. They were pretty easy to install. The only problem iat first was that sometimes they'd work, and sometimes they wouldn't, especially with my laptop. Sometimes, it just wouldn't connect to our network, even though it was listed in the wireless manager and was giving a strong signal. Now they have fallen apart. It got to where it wouldn't power up unless I actually BENT it. Then It got to the point where I had to pop the cover off in order to bend it enough to work. The first one has been bent completely off, the second one is on its way. If you touch it slightly, it turns off. It greatly limits the portability of my laptop.

    Great basement wireless
    5
Posted by: from Omaha, NE on 06/07/2009Wireless N has greater range, and this unit proves it. Also, it comes with a wired holder so you can experiment with different locations to get the best connection. It is impossible to do this with built-in wireless or a card. This is critical when you are separated from the access point (such as being in a basement!). The secret is that N works better even if your access point is G. It works better than "RangeBooster G". If you have an N router you can get higher speeds, but this is only useful for local file sharing. Even G is faster than the fastest Internet connection available to consumers, so N is not needed for speed on the Internet. But it really helps in marginal reception situations.
