Synopsis

The Euro-electro-pop of Daft Punk is married to an epic sci-fi story line in this ambitious anime project conceived by the band, Manga legend Leiji Matsumoto, and director Kazuhisa Takenouchi. Interstella 5555: The 5tory of The 5ecret 5tar System involves the plight of talented musicians from a neighboring galaxy who are brought to earth by an evil corporation. Stripped of their immense talents, they are turned into a band of emotionless, hit-churning automatons named The Crescendolls. As they play arena after arena in increasingly glitzy fashion, the plucky popsters fight to regain their identities to bring the world the sort of tunes they know they can deliver. Told entirely without dialogue, Interstella 5555 features Daft Punk's album Discovery in its entirety. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Posted by: from Atlanta, GA on 09/21/2011This has to be one of the greatest meet-ups in cinema history. Leiji Matsumoto, one of the premier animators, brings his unique animation style to the unique sounding Daft Punk. Fans of either Matsumoto or Daft Punk must have this DVD

Daft Punk

Posted by: from Arlington, TX on 12/29/2010Leiji Matsumoto who created Captain Harlock, Starblazers & Queen Esmerelda created the animated sequenses for Daft Punk - Discovery album. I love the old animation style and how it brings to life the music in a well told story. It follows the tale of a band who is kidnapped from another planet and brought to Earth and are put under mind control of the evil music promoter and their journey to escape and get back home. The action sequences matches the music and the timing between the two is great. The music is catchy and addictive. Funny thing is that I was not familar with Daft Punk and only saw the video for the music video of opening song, "One More Time" and have been hooked on the band ever since. I definately recommend this to any anime fan.

Great companion to the album

Posted by: from on 05/02/2008This movie plays each song from Daft Punk's "Discovery" album back to back, with an animated story going along for the ride. Both fans of Daft Punk and anime should find something to like in this movie. In fact, portions of this movie were aired on TV as music videos, and they turned out to be pretty popular. Although the movie contains no words (other than the occasional song lyrics), the meaning of the images comes through quite clearly and is never confusing. It's like one long, cohesive music video. I think perhaps the only way you wont like this is if you're not a fan of Daft Punk or anime. Play it at a party to enjoy the music and have some visuals going, or watch it as a movie and enjoy the show. Overal

Surprisingly Wonderful

Posted by: from Chicago, IL on 09/15/2007I've never been a fan of dialogue-free movies, nor was I ever terribly fond of Daft Punk's music. Then I saw Interstella 5555, and my opinion did a total 180. The songs on the Discovery album took on an entirely new life when they were paired with Matsumoto's work, and I've acquired an entirely new appreciation for both. Might not be every person's cup of tea, but if you're into anime and electronic music, this might just be worth your money.
