Synopsis

The beauty and mystery of life beneath the surface of the ocean is brought to the screen in this documentary, shot in 3-D and exhibited in the high-definition IMAX film format. Shot in the ocean depths off the coasts of Baja, the Caribbean, and North Carolina, Deep Sea depicts the complexity of the underwater ecosystem, as some sea creatures live in cooperation while others feed upon weaker species to survive. Filmmaker Howard Hall also focuses on the splendor of this world rarely seen by human eyes, photographing a number of rare species of fish, squids, manta rays, jellyfish, and other aquatic creatures, as well as offering a perspective on the environmental dangers that threaten the underwater community. Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet provide narration for the film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Okay Effect

Posted by: from dfw, texas on 07/25/2011This was one of my first 3d movies/videos. I love discovery / nature type documentaries so this was right up my alley. The narration wasn't the best but I wanted it primarily for its 3d so I can look over that part. The narrator is an actor not a speaker for senate. I wish we could have gotten at least another 15 mins out of it to make a full hr long show but oh well. The length is given on the Blu ray and on this web site so no one can really complain about that. I will have to check out all the other sea 3d movies to compare in more detail.

3D should pop. This does.

Posted by: from Minneapolis, MN on 03/03/2011When i purchased my 3D TV and Blu Ray player, I did so because I wanted the bells and whistles. I wanted to see things jump out at me from the screen. A "popping" of objects that you want to reach out and touch. What i discovered was that it is Not so much the hardware (although some are better than others) but more THE MEDIA itself that determines this. This IMAX movie, although short, delivers the effects of 3D vividly. It is fun to try and reach out and touch the fish as they dance in front of your eyes. The particles of sea debris float inches from your nose. Its definitely fun to watch, an makes it almost seem like you are in the water with the sea life there. Its good to note that not all 3D movies are created equal. Its a good idea to research before you buy given that the media is so expensive. I would recommend this movie if you want to take advantage of the best that 3D has to offer in this early stage of the game.

Poor 3D effects, too pricey
2
Posted by: from indiana on 02/03/2011When I read the first 2 reviews, I wanted to warm you about the truth of this movie before you throw your money away. Most of the 3D effects are focus on fish crawling on the floor of the sea. Who wants to see fish walking on the floor of the sea or laying under rocks or something. Like that. The movie commentary was boring and too much, and you do not need two people (Johnny Depp and Kate winslet) talking about a fish. Kate winslet would have been fine. The little scenes of fish swimming did not make you want to say wow! At all. in fact, you will get tired of watching them swim like looking at regular TV. This movie is not worth $40.00 at all. Many of the 3D movies out now are poor 3D movies especially those old movies that were made into 3D. don’t buy!! In addition, many of the reviews on 3D movies are not giving you the truth. I have learned to listen to those reviews that have given a 1 or 3 star on a movie or and item. I also look for reviews that focus on picture quality, sharpness, and 3D effects. Many movie companies have not upgrade to 3D cameras so you have to be careful. 3D is still new. At this point the only movie company I would trust is Sony. Sony is the first to make 3D TVs, 3D movies, 3D dvd players, 3D glasses but I would be careful with them as well until more of the movie companies start making 3D movies.

Outstanding color & 3D effects
5
Posted by: from Kalamazoo, MI on 12/01/2010Brilliant color, superb detail, outstanding 3D effects for a home entertainment system. Everyone will enjoy this - just wish it lasted longer than 41 minutes. Obviously no plot or acting, but the narration is good. Not your thrill-a-minute movie, more like a National Geographic program, but very entertaining. Photography was excellent and I was surprised at how good the lighting was for an under-the-sea movie. Definitely a must-have if you're building your 3D movie library.
