Everything to luv about the Dragon Quest series

Posted by: from NYC on 09/15/2012I got a Nintendo DS primarily to play this game and it was worth it! For any RPG fan, I recommend this game. For any Dragon Quest series fan, this game is a must play. Having to play it on a portable system is a bit of a hassle, but worth the inconvenience for what would otherwise be a great game easily on par with the previous installment of Dragon Quest VIII.

Posted by: from nc on 09/05/2012I purchased this game as a request from my grandson who is 6. He loves playing games. He figured out to how to play very quickly and didn't need any help from me except for reading some of the words. By getting this game I made a little boy very happy.

Posted by: from Coward, SC on 01/26/2012Ahhhhh, this game takes me back to the NES JRPG games such as the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. Not only do I love it, but so does my 9 year old daughter. I would recommend this game to anyone (and have recommended it to several people)!!

Old School RPG game sequel done right!!

Posted by: from Canutillo, TX on 01/15/2011I remember playing dragon warrior for the NES like 20 years ago. The amazing sensation it made me feel searching for items and fightning monsters was great. And after playing this days RPG games i lost that sensation. But after playing this game it all came back. Music old and new are simply amazing and it really goes along with the game scenes and battles. Battles even tought repetitive they are not boring at all. You can fight in like some many different ways even with the same abilities and spells that battles are different every time. Especially sicne you can change proffesions and keep the same abilities. Just like dragon warrior 3. Searching for items and quests its also great. The game graphics are great. Akira Toriyama its s real master in designing monsters and characters. You will feel this weird sensation of been in another world with this game. Also one of the things I like about this game even tought the storyline and the game its linear because you have to follow a storyline, you dont feel that it is. You can do lots of things between game before continuing your adventure. And that my friends its hard to do for today standards. Dont believe me? play FF 13 and you will see how linear games are this days. Another thing I dont like, its that since Enix joined squaresoft, Dragon quests games now contain anoying characters and futuristic vehicles. That really takes some of that old medieval feeling to the games. I mean this are not Final Fantasy games for God sakes. I dont have nothing against FF games, in fact i love them too, but i think they are two different series and they should never meet along the road. I can keep talking about this game all day but one thing is for sure. Buy this. you will never regret you did. And if you have never discovered the world of Dragon quest game series. Please do... There is a lot RPG game history behind it and you will have fun with it. I promise!!

nothing special

Posted by: from CA on 10/07/2010The charm of character customization and clothing wears off pretty quickly, leaving the typical grind for gear/levels of most RPGs. Nothing particularly special makes DQIX stand out from the rest.

A great new rpg with a classic feel

Posted by: from Mesa,AZ on 10/03/2010While there might be many of you out there that are going to buy this game simply because it is part of the Dragon Quest series. For me, I had never played any of them before, so I decided to give it a shot. I was pleasantly suprised. Graphics, as always for the DS, are not the greatest and for the majority of the game it will look like an SNES game. For most people that play RPGs, it shouldnt be a big deal. The story is bare bones, but its there. You start off as an angel-in-training trying known as a Celestial. Your goal is to do good deeds til your goddess gets enough power to take your entire species to Heaven. Unfortunately, someone attacks your village and a crucial part of the goddesses power is spread throughout the world. It is then your task to go from town to town collecting them, and defeating the evil individuals that possess them. You have a party of 4 and you get to choose which classes each of them become. Later on, you can even switch classes and level them up. So you can, for example, get a priest as a healer, then switch him to warrior later to boost his attack and then switch him back. The end result would be your original priest with quite a bit more strength. The battles are turn based, so in one rotation every person would get one attack. The battles range from very easy to impossible and anywhere inbetween. There are "limit breaks" in this game, which is based on the class of the character using it, although they seem to be random, and few and far between. Expect to have to grind inbetween bosses to even have a chance to beat the next one. Just doing the basics without even touching the side quests you are looking to log anywhere from 30-50 hours depending on your familiarity with the DQ series or the mechanics of rpgs in general. If you do decide to mess around with the side quests (there are over 100) then you are looking to add at least double that. While the main quests aren't that hard (as long as you are grinding in between bosses) there is a huge leap in difficulty in the post-game quests. There is almost an endless amount of stuff to do during and after you beat the game, all of which is very fun. The game caters to a new RPG player to the hardcore RPG enthusiast, and if you fall somewhere in there, you are going to LOVE Dragon Quest 9.

A wonderful return to the old school RPG
5
Posted by: from Reading PA on 09/18/2010I can not stress enough my love of this game. I have to date logged about 120 hours worth of game play and I have yet to complete it. The game offers gamers a good old school RPG experience, combined with new updated gameplay. The Story is excellence and the pacing lets the game flow smoothly. The sound and style work well with what the DS provides. The game mechanics are a bit hard to pick up at first but allow a great amount of detail to be placed in each of your characters. The game offers a fair bit of difficulty but will get much easier as you perfect your characters. As for replay you can beat this game in about 30 hours if you rush through or take your time and try to complete everything. There are in addition Wi Fi offered quests and items that add to the post game experience. The only downfall I can find is the lack of any use for the DS stylus. Although it can be used for combat and movement, most old school gamers will be reaching for the D-Pad after a few minutes. For anyone looking for a cheaper alternative to the more expensive RPG's of the X-box and PS3 this is a good choice to pick up.

Fun game for all ages

Posted by: from Houston on 09/14/2010I played Japanes version of this game (DQ9) about a year, and now enjoying English version to start over... it is so fun to play. Real fun starts after beating boss, like treasure map hunt, alchemy of ultimate equipments, a lot of mini-quests, etc... it is endless. Some of minor features can't be unlocked unless you get a lot of guests by "Canvass for guests" with tag mode, so it can be challenge if you can't find others playing this game around you, but it won't affect overall play.
