Escort raises the bar with the Passport IQ
    5
Posted by: from Seattle, Washington on 01/19/2013First off, I'm a real stickler about electronic gadgets in this price range as I try to find faults, weigh-in on the pros and cons in order to decide if they're 'keepers' to me in the long run. Needless to say, I had just returned a 64 GB wifi ipad mini today for the Escort Passport IQ. What made me decide to drop the ipad mini was because the pre-installed software, while "light" in programming code, is mediocre to say the least. Money revolves around most everything you do within the IOS. Furthermore, the restrictions imposed upon their handheld devices, as well as the Lightning to "what-ever" connector, absolutely sucks. They only work on half of the apple products they can physically connect to. I've learned enough about the Cuppertino based company to steer far away from them in the future. With that said, I am going to evaluate the Escort Passport IQ the same way I review everything else. So without further adieu, my first impressions of the Escort Passport IQ is as follows - In this case, I was pleasantly surprised as to how well Escort has properly packaged the Passport IQ. Rest assured, that if you ordered one today, the contents inside will remain intact and functional, even if a careless postal carrier were to throw it out of his truck towards your front door. Unlike "white box" Cuppertino connection kits, I was able discern with confidence, all there is to know about the Escort Passport IQ, simply by reading the exterior of the package. The Escort Passport IQ is truly a plug & play device. In as much, that it took me less than five minutes to extract, connect, mount, and program my initial destination - then away I went with a smile. I have nothing positive to say about the ipad mini with regard to navigation. As a previous owner of the Escort 9500i, I can affirm that Escort has stood by their products and continues to keep in touch with their customers through subscription-based emails about rebates and the latest product news. At your own discretion, you can decide to subscribe to them if you want to be kept well-informed. Nevertheless, I urge you to do so as their newsletters are short, sweet, and concise, with NO PRESSURE to BUY because tomorrow is the-last-day of an Eternity Sale. That is what I like about Escort, they even remembered me on my birthday with a post card via US Postal Service. Now let's get on to my thoughts 'in general' about the Passport IQ after having tinkered with it on my way home today. I'm not going to reemphasize about the awesome performance and design as posted above by: QAMan from Little Rock on 01/10/2013, because everything he mentioned is correct to the TEE. They are my sentiments too, even when comparing the navigation portion of the device to the likes of TomTom and Garmin as witnessed in his follow-up comment. The Escort Passport IQ will remain and continue to be my "GO TO" multi-purpose GPS/radar detection device. Yes, it's that GOOD, with strong emphasis on both fronts. No problems here concerning the mount. The apparatus firmly sticks to the windshield pretty tight out of the box. No adjustments to strengthen it even further were necessary. Maybe later on, but I doubt it based on how well its designed. However, I must conclude in price-points between this device and the 9500IX (as there's no difference in price as of this writing) that the choice in WHICH ONE to buy is a no-brainer. Escort has proven themselves with a track record of excellence and has risen the bar UP once again. You don't need to look elsewhere, as I have affixed my highest Seal-of-Approval, rating the Escort Passport IQ with Five-Stars.

Top notch radar detector; very good GPS

Posted by: from Little Rock on 01/10/2013The radar detector is top rated; good filtering of false alarms, excellent responsiveness and distance. The GPS has very nice features, especially with "over speed warning". I prefer the turn alert instructions to my Garmin, the instructions a clear and repeated at the appropriate intervals as the turn is approached. My focus was to have a great radar detector first and with the very good GPS features, this device is a winner. Especially with the drop in price, the value is quite good. Map updates will run $29.95 and are sent via SD card. Included is an initial subscription to update the red light, speed trap locations and the ongoing subscription cost is quite reasonable if one wishes to maintain this. I like that the unit does not look like a radar detector. The issue with other detectors is the false alarms that occur when driving by businesses with automatic doors (they are everywhere). It is easy to lock out these manually by pressing a button on the smart cord, or if you pass by the same alert three times it can automatically lock this out for the future. Also, instead of the "chirping alerts" that are standard on radar detectors, you can select a "pleasant" alert tone that sounds once and is then silent. The alarm bar and alarm light on the cord are still visible. Nice .....

Posted by: from Lyons, IL. on 11/25/2011This unit is great! Red Light alert is very nice fearure. I've added a red light location that was not there. They provide for this onscreen. Extremely easy to mark red light cameras on the fly.Red light alert also works over any muting which is good. Autolearn is another great feature reducing false alarms on frequent routes. Hard to justify expense in the begining but worth it. only flaw is it's large size. It is too heavy for its mount. hinge falls with vibration. I just mounted lower so it rests on the dash

Posted by: from Geneseo, NY on 10/21/2011A great detector and navigation all in one. I really like the large screen. It is able to convey all the relevant information from a detector and a nav perspective. I travel a lot for work and it comes in very handy all over the US. It gets me where I need to go and warns me about police activity in areas I that are unfamiliar to me. Big help on the red light cameras, especially in CA
