Friends: The One Where No One's Ready
Revolving around the simple premise of wanting to go out, this episode stands out for the way it realistically portrays how group inertia can slow you down. Ross (David Schwimmer) has an important museum function to go to and all the friends are supposed to come. Inevitably, nobody is ready to go when he is, and the likelihood that they will ever leave the building decreases by the punch line. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) have an inane argument over borrowing each others things which leads to a more pointed -- but no less funny -- squabble over a chair. Sitting down in it together, Chandler fraudulently claims he is comfortable. Joey creepily replies, "Me too. In fact, I think I might be a little too comfortable." Among the other reasons they don't leave is that humus is spilled on Phoebe's (Lisa Kudrow) dress and Monica (Courteney Cox) hears a possibly new message from Richard (Tom Selleck) on her answering machine. She then returns his call only to leave a horrible message on his machine which she attempts to erase, but makes it worse. There are also some delightful moments involving a glass of what may be fat. Suffice it to say Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) decides not to leave until Joey drinks the fat. This episode originally aired on November 26, 1996. ~ All Movie Guide

Friends: The One With the Giant Poking Device
In the conclusion of a two-part story, Joey (Matt LeBlanc) tells Chandler (Matthew Perry) that Janice (Maggie Wheeler) may still be in love with her ex-husband. Swallowing his pride, Chandler decides to allow Janice to make up her own mind. Elsewhere, little Ben makes an innocent statement of fact that gets both Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Monica (Courteney Cox) into trouble. And Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) finds a new reason to be afraid of the dentist -- and it centers around a string of sudden deaths, the Ugly Naked Guy, and the Giant Poking Device of the title. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Princess Leia Fantasy
In this opening episode of Friends' third season, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) discovers that Ross (David Schwimmer) has a "thing" for Star Wars' Princess Leia. Meanwhile, Monica (Courteney Cox) can't function properly after breaking up with Richard, resulting in a visit to a sleep therapist. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) is asked to bond with the troublesome Janice (Maggie Wheeler). And Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Ross bring up "that girl in the Xerox place" for the first time. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Football
As part of their Thanksgiving festivities, the gang plays a game of touch football. But there's no fun to be had as the game degenerates into a four-pronged argument. No, it isn't the football that's the cause of it all; instead, the row is caused by a matter of the heart involving a Dutch lass, and a bad case of sibling rivalry, otherwise known as "The Geller Cup." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Metaphorical Tunnel
Joey (Matt LeBlanc) is swamped with an unusually large amount of employment opportunities when Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) takes over as his agent. Ross (David Schwimmer) has issues with his son Ben's choice of playthings, until Monica (Courteney Cox) reminds Ross of a few unmanly activities in his own youth. Chandler (Matthew Perry) makes the commitment to end all commitments in his relationship with Janice (Maggie Wheeler). And the episode's title comes into play via a generous helping of ice cream. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Jam
Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) dates a man, Malcolm, who has been stalking her twin sister, Ursula. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) sustains an injury after acting like a kid. Monica (Courteney Cox) makes a lot of jam to get over Richard and gives serious consideration to artificial insemination. And Chandler (Matthew Perry) is the recipient of unusual advice from Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). David Arquette, not yet wed to series regular Courteney Cox, is seen as Malcolm. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with Frank, Jr.
Isabella Rosselini guest stars in this episode, in which Ross (David Schwimmer) tries to come up with the names of his five "dream" celebrities (a list that he's forced to pare down to four at the least advantageous moment). Meanwhile, Phoebe's half-brother, Frank Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi), shows up, prompting Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) to attempt a bonding exercise. And Joey (Matt LeBlanc) tries to convert his corner of the apartment into a home entertainment center (funny, it started out as a mailbox...). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Race Car Bed
In the first episode of a two-part story, Monica (Courteney Cox) purchases a bed from "The Mattress King" (Mark Cohen) -- namely, Janice's (Maggie Wheeler) estranged husband -- resulting in a misdelivery. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) can't seem to bring her father and Ross (David Schwimmer) closer together, but the problem may be Rachel herself. And former soap opera star Joey (Matt LeBlanc) lands a job training other daytime drama wannabes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Flashback
Janice (Maggie Wheeler) wants to know just how intimate the members of "the gang" have been with one another. This leads to a series of reminiscences, hurling us backward to the year 1992. In fact, we go so far back that Ugly Naked Guy is still Cute Naked Guy, and Ross (David Schwimmer) is delighted that his wife, Carol, has a new friend named Susan. The "late" Mr. Heckles (Larry Hankin) makes a guest appearance with an oboe solo. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with All the Jealousy
Disgruntled Ross (David Schwimmer) thinks that Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) new co-worker Mark (Steven Eckholdt) is a bit too friendly, while Rachel's former boss Gunther (James Michael Tyler) gets all moony-eyed. Monica (Courteney Cox) dates a poetic and somewhat xenophobic busboy named Julio (Carlos Gomez). And Joey (Matt LeBlanc), anxious to land a job in a Broadway musical, claims on his resumé that he is an expert dancer -- with disastrous results. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One Where Monica and Richard are Just Friends
Tom Selleck returns as Dr. Richard Burke, ex-beau of the much-younger Monica (Courteney Cox). Chancing to meet Richard at the video store, Monica is determined to keep all future encounters on a platonic basis. Meanwhile, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) girds up her courage to read The Shining (provided that Joey [Matt LeBlanc] can wade through Little Women). And Phoebe's (Lisa Kudrow) latest boyfriend favors shorts that are way, way too short. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One at the Beach
Yes, they go to the beach, but a lot more happens in this third-season finale of Friends. Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) wants to find out just how much an old family friend (Teri Garr) knows about Phoebe's past (setting up a key plot point in the traditional season-ending cliffhanger). Ross (David Schwimmer) must choose between Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and the hedonistic, hairless Bonnie (Christine Taylor). Chandler (Matthew Perry) is surprised by Monica's (Courteney Cox) reaction to a personal question. And Joey (Matt LeBlanc) loses everything in a game of strip poker. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One With Ross's Thing
The "thing" of the title is a strange skin condition on a delicate part of Ross' anatomy. While Ross (David Schwimmer) consults Phoebe's herbalist, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) is torn between two boyfriends with similar qualifications but vastly different professions. And Monica (Courteney Cox) wonders if Pete (Jon Favreau) is getting serious...even as Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) calmly begins planning Monica's wedding. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Screamer
Ross (David Schwimmer) is terrified by the behavior of Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) date, Tommy (Ben Stiller), during the opening of Joey's play; trouble is, Ross is the only one who witnesses that behavior. As for Joey (Matt LeBlanc), his romance with co-star Kate (Dina Meyer) hits a professional snag. And Phoebe's (Lisa Kudrow) efforts to extend her phone warranty are literally put on hold. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Dollhouse
Inheriting an antique dollhouse from her Aunt Silvia, Monica (Courteney Cox) doesn't want Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) anywhere near her "legacy," leading Phoebe to construct a little house of her own (and what a house!) Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) arranges a date between Chandler (Matthew Perry) and her boss, Joanna (Alison La Placa) -- then has second thoughts. And Joey gets serious about his co-star Kate (Dina Meyer). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Tiny T-Shirt
Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) declares her independence from Ross (David Schwimmer) by dating Mark (Steven Eckholdt). Though Monica (Courteney Cox) and her wealthy beau, Pete (Jon Favreau), have little in common, Monica persists in the relationship -- but not for the reasons that seem obvious to those around her. And contrary to his expectations, Joey (Matt LeBlanc) falls for Kate (Dina Meyer in her first series appearance), the actress appearing opposite him in a play. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One Without the Ski Trip
Now that they've broken up, both Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) are anxious to "hoard" their other friends for themselves. Rachel invites the gang for a ski trip, deliberately excluding Ross. As Ross forlornly pays a visit to his ex-wife, Carol (Jane Sibbett) -- who is currently celebrating her anniversary with her significant other, Susan -- his friend Chandler (Matthew Perry) renews a nasty habit. Sam Simon of The Simpsons fame directed this episode. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Morning After
In the second half of a two-part story, Ross (David Schwimmer) has spent the night with Chloe (Angela Featherstone), the girl from the Xerox store with the belly-button ring. When Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) finds out, a battle royal ensues. The other friends would like to stay out of the fracas, but they are literally trapped into eavesdropping. And in another development, a "painless" leg-waxing kit doesn't entirely live up to its advertising. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with Phoebe's Ex-Partner
Sherilyn Fenn guest stars as Chandler's (Matthew Perry) new girlfriend Ginger, who has an artificial leg and a low gross-out threshold. Meanwhile, Phoebe's (Lisa Kudrow) former singing partner Leslie (Elizabeth Daily) wants to stir up a promotional blitz for their deathless composition "Smelly Cat." And Ross (David Schwimmer) has still not adjusted to Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) new job -- or her new co-worker Mark (Steven Eckholdt). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister
While drunk, Chandler (Matthew Perry) has a fling with one of Joey's (Matt LeBlanc) sisters. Once his head clears up, he can't remember which sister was the lucky one (Gina or Dina?). On other fronts, Phoebe's (Lisa Kudrow) new date is both very charming and very loud. And Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) is offered a job at Bloomingdale's by a handsome stranger, arousing Ross' (David Schwimmer) suspicious nature. Steven Eckholdt makes his first series appearance as Mark. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Ultimate Fighting Championship
Pete (Jon Favreau) enters a grueling "ultimate fight," leading to a lot of hurt and a fateful decision by Monica (Courteney Cox). Ross' (David Schwimmer) new date Bonnie (Christine Taylor) once had a hair problem -- mainly, she didn't have any. Chandler's (Matthew Perry) new boss gives a whole new meaning to the word forceful. And yes, those two guys in the park are just who you think they are. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One With the Chick and the Duck
The title refers to the cute-and-fuzzy fowl adopted by Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler (Matthew Perry). Elsewhere, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) suspects that there are strings attached when Pete (Jon Favreau) offers Monica (Courteney Cox) a fabulous job in his restaurant. And Ross (David Schwimmer) gives up one of his favorite things to rush to the side of Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), the victim of Monica's reckless roller-skating. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break
In the first episode of a two-part story, an argument leads Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) to put their relationship on temporary hold. Elsewhere, Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) fall for Chloe the Xerox Girl (Angela Featherstone), who wants both of them -- but at the same time? And love hits a language barrier when Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) dates a foreign diplomat. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One Where Rachel Quits
Upset when her boss, Gunther (James Michael Tyler), suggests she needs more training, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) quits her job. Elsewhere on the employment front, Joey (Matt LeBlanc) lands a job selling Christmas trees, leading Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) to lend a hand despite a long-harbored hatred for those selfsame trees. And Ross (David Schwimmer) sells Brown Bird Cookies as penance for accidentally breaking a little girl's leg. Yes, that's comedian Shelley Berman, making his first series appearance as Mr. Kaplan Jr. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Friends: The One with the Hypnosis Tape
Having gone back to smoking, Chandler (Matthew Perry) tries all sorts of things to quit, including a hypnosis tape (from the episode of the same title). Meanwhile, Monica's (Courteney Cox) date yields unexpected results. And Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) finds out that her half-brother Frank Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi) is in love -- and she's none too pleased with the woman in his life. Jon Favreau and Debra Jo Rupp make their first series appearances as Pete and Alice, respectively. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
