Posted by: from NY on 03/05/2013I had horrible picture quality after the service. www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com has better setting values than the geek squad calibration. This service is for people that don't even know how to turn on a computer.

Lowered Resolution on TV "AND" Blu-Ray Player
    1
Posted by: from on 03/03/2013As Bestbuy Silver Premier member, after extensive procrastination and reading mixed reviews, decided to have my Samsung HD LCD TV Calibrated by Bestbuys Geek Squad. The Calibration includes two outlets, which in my case were the HDMI for the Samsung TV and a relatively new high end Sony Blu-Ray player. At the time of the calibration, it appeared ( key word being appeared" to be somewhat improved, but it's really difficult to tell in the middle of the day in a relatively bright room, but I felt it wasn't at least worst by the time the calibration was complete. After the technician left however, I checked the Reaolution on the TV, which is set up thru Comcast with a Comcast HD Box and half of the HD channels are now outputting at a lower level, not high definition. This is also the case with my Blu--Ray player which "now" outputs "NO" Blu-Ray DVD's in High Definition whatsoever! I've made several attempts to have this resolved by calling Bestbuy Geek Squad, yet all calls and request to come back out and at least set both my TV and Blu-Ray player back to their previous settings have gone unaddressed and unanswered. It appears the Geek Squad is absolutely not concerned in any way whatsoever. I wanted to at least allow a month or so, in order for them to respond even to the survey I completed after the service where I specifically requested that someone from their office contact me to resolve the issue, however I have received no calls or attempt to reach me whatsoever! I at this point, I would not only not recommend this to anyone, but would warn anyone who asked to simply stay away from having Bestbuys Geek Squad perform a calibration.

    Not worth $250.00
    1
Posted by: from on 02/27/2013I bought a Samsung UN60ES8000 from Best Buy and was told to have it calibrated by one of their employees. They told me I wouldn't be getting my bang for the buck on the TV if I didn't have it calibrated. I just had it calibrated and I can't tell a difference. I'm very disappointed. He calibrated it in Movie mode and after it was finished the Standard mode looks better. It would have been nice if he said it isn't worth calibrating for the money and I'm going to suggest you ask for a refund. But I guess they're trained not to suggest anything regarding a refund. It's very disheartening knowing I just threw away $250.00.

Posted by: from Ocala, FL on 02/21/2013This is a waste of money. The color and image was worse after the service than before. I could have made the same changes myself at no cost. I would not recommend this service.

    It's a coin toss!

Posted by: from Anaheim, CA on 02/11/2013It's a hit and miss with getting calibration from Best Buy's Geek Squad. I had 3 calibrations from them: first one I paid for, then had to replace the TV due to a defect, so they came out to calibrate the replacement TV again. This second calibration was so awful that I had to get them back in to re-calibrate it (3rd calibration). Here are the bottom line facts: - Quality of their calibrators varies greatly, so you practically have no idea if you'll get a pretty decent calibration, or a rather "bad" one. - My first and last calibration were pretty decent though, and they will get your picture to look certainly better than any factory preset, but it is not exactly your top calibration. They spend maybe 45 minutes on your TV, whereas the best calibrators will spend a few hours. So if you are going to spend money to get the best picture your TV can provide, you may want to consider if you want to pay for only decent picture, or really the best picture? This may affect your decision which calibration service to go for. - They also tend to go into TV's service mode, which should not be necessary, and I would prefer they just played with the TV's picture management modes instead. Whatever they change in the service menu is something I cannot undo or change later if I want, since the service menu is inaccessible to the regular user. Also changes in the service menu affect all picture modes of the TV, so you do not have any of the original factory presets any more the way they were delivered (for any of your own personal tweaks, or if you don't really like how they have adjusted your picture, etc). In the end, I would certainly highly recommend anyone to get their TV calibrated one way or another, as factory presets are pretty bad and inaccurate on all TV's even the most expensive ones. However, just be aware that it's a bit of a hit and miss with Geek Squad, and if they don't get it to your satisfaction the first time, you may have to get a different guy to come out and correct it to your liking...

Great Experience with Best Buy TV Calibration
    5
Posted by: from State College, PA on 01/30/2013Full Disclosure: I had this service performed for free, as a Reward Zone Premier Silver benefit. I am fairly tech savvy and have borderline OCD when it comes to my technology. Even though this was a free service for me, I still debated for a long time on whether or not I should get this done, as I was reluctant to have someone from Geek Squad come and calibrate my TV. I had already calibrated the TV on my own using a calibration Blu-ray disc and was pretty happy with my own settings. In the end, I decided to give it a shot, since it was free for me anyway. If I didn't like it, I could always go back to my own settings. I am very glad that I decided to schedule it. Also, I apologize for the long review. As this is quite expensive without Silver benefits, I thought that I would try to give as much information as I can. I called on a Sunday evening to request an appointment. They asked me if I had at least 100 hours on the TV as a break-in period. I did, so they scheduled and appointment for me for Wednesday of that same week. The appointment was originally set for a four hour block (in between 8am and 12pm). The day before the appointment, the tech called me to confirm the appointment and let me know that he would call in the morning to further specify what time he arrive. The morning of the appointment, he called at around 8:15am and told me he would be there in about an hour (I appreciated the heads up). True to his word, he arrived a little less than an hour later. Before he started working, I asked if he minded if I stuck around and watched, as I was curious as to what the process would be. He told me he didn't mind at all and he would be happy to answer any questions that I had throughout the calibration process. The service includes calibration for two HDMI inputs. All of my devices connect through a home theater receiver, so in theory, he only needed to calibrate one input in my case (he did two anyway). For those of you who don't use a receiver with HDMI switching, keep in mind that this service is for only two inputs. For those of you who have TVs with special service menus, this may be an issue; for others who have access to advanced color, brightness, and contrast settings, you can probably just copy and set the other inputs yourself after the tech is done. He worked for about an hour and was answering any questions that I had throughout the process; he seemed quite knowledgeable. When he was done he went over everything with me and we tested out a few different sources to see how it looked. We tried out a few different TV channels, ranging from shows with bright lighting and colors (such as on The Food Network) to channels with darker scenes with shadows (such as on The SyFy network). Then we tested out a video game on my Xbox 360 and then finally we tried The Dark Night on Blu-ray on my PS3. The difference was tremendous. From my own calibrations, the brightness and the contrast was pretty close...however the color was at a completely different level. Everything just looks "real" now. I don't know how to explain it, but the colors simply look like they would in real life. The ingredients on The Food Network looked like they would in my own kitchen. The cilantro looked so real that I could practically smell it. Cayenne pepper looked like it was straight out of a jar in my cabinet. I think what really "wowed" me though was The Dark Knight on Blu-ray. He asked if I had anything on Blu-ray that I wanted to try out. That was the disc that I gave him, with a particular scene in mind. Upon putting the disc in, he went to the scene selection and went straight to the exact scene that I was thinking of (the car chase scene), without me saying anything. It looked amazing. I've watched that movie many times on Blu-ray on my own TV and the sets of a few of my friends and family members as well. I don't think I've seen it like that since I saw the movie in the theater for the first time. It was simply awesome. Overall, I highly recommend this service, especially to Premier Silver members who can get it for free. For $250, it's a tougher call. On one hand, it did make a huge difference on my TV, even though I had already calibrated it myself. At this point, I truly can't imagine going back to my old settings. On the other hand, that is a lot of money (that's actually exactly 1/3 of the cost of my TV that was calibrated). In the future though, if I ever need to calibrate a TV again and I could not get it for free again, I think I probably would pay the $250. For reference, here's my equipment: Mitsubishi WD-60739 60" DLP TV Yamaha RXV567 Receiver Tivo HD Xbox 360 PS3 Roku HD HTPC running XBMC

Great service, but you need to talk to tech prior
    4
Posted by: from Clarkston, MI on 01/13/2013I have an older rear projection TV and the calibrations that need to be adjusted require you enter into a special factory calibration menu which requires a special manual, which luckily I had purchased from the TV manufacturer (I understand newer sets allow the user to change these settings). The Geek squad agent that set up the visit did not ask for any TV specifics. The tech had good understanding of the settings we needed to change (but had no manual for this set), and it took over half the time to get the correct configuration to even start the process. Because if that we were only able to calibrate one input, versus the expected two. Make sure you talk to the tech prior to the visit and make sure he has the appropriate calibration manual if you have an older TV. The TV picture on the calibrated input is far superior to the pre-calibration picture and really pops now.

TV calibration wasn't worth the money

Posted by: from Kalamazoo, MI on 11/07/2012I was excited to get this done for a long time. After technician finished with adjustments the picture looked awful. My settings looked better than his. When he finished with the calibration the color was way too intense causing facial tones to appear reddish. He spent a lot of time showing me graphs and explaining what they meant but who cares if the picture looks lousy. I ignore the two modes he set up and watch what I already had configured. I haven't complained to Best Buy yet but may ask for a refund or a recalibration.
