What are the Benefits
Save Money on Utility Bills
A refrigerator made in 1992 uses over 1,020 kilowatt hours and costs you more than $100 a year to run. Replace it with a model that has earned the ENERGY STAR and you could save over $65 a year while avoiding nearly 940 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.

Quieter
More insulation and better compressors mean ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators often run quieter than older models.
Advanced Features
You can find the ENERGY STAR label on the most advanced refrigerators in a variety of designs, including French-door, side-by-side, bottom-mount freezer, and top-mount freezer. Many ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators use innovative drawer designs and improved temperature controls to keep your food fresher, longer.
Save Energy
Refrigerators that have earned the ENERGY STAR are 20% more energy efficient than the minimum federal standard. If everyone purchasing a refrigerator in 2010 chose a model that has earned the ENERGY STAR, together we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from more than 120,000 cars.
Environmental Protection
Nearly 70% of U.S. electricity is generated with coal and natural gas, which release greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators use less energy and help us reduce our impact on the environment.
The Time is Right to Recycle Your Old Refrigerator
If you still have a fridge from the 1980s, replace it with an ENERGY STAR qualified model and save over $100 each year on your utility bills. Replace a fridge from the 1970s and save nearly $200 each year! Use the ENERGY STAR Savings Calculator to find out exactly how much money you'll save by replacing your existing refrigerator.
More Energy-Saving Tips
- Make sure the door seals are airtight.
- Allow air to circulate around the condenser coils by leaving a space between the wall or cabinets and the refrigerator. Also, keep the coils clean.
- Position your refrigerator away from any heat sources, such as an oven, dishwasher or direct sunlight from a window.
- Keep your refrigerator 35-38°F and your freezer at 0°F.
- Minimize the amount of the time the refrigerator door is open.
