Synopsis

An American journalist in search of the love he once left behind travels to a mysterious Japanese island where the past is best left forgotten in the one installment of Showtime's Masters of Horror series that was too controversial for American television. It was long ago that Christopher (Billy Drago) met the mysterious prostitute who captured his heart, but their grim fate was forever sealed when he left the island with only a promise to return one day in the future. Unlike many of the insincere souls who promise to spirit the prostitutes away from the dark and infernal island, Christopher actually made good on his word. However, life is cheap on this bewitched island where the local brothel is the sole refuge for weary souls, and though he ultimately proved to be a rare exception to the rule, Christopher has taken far too long to fulfill his promise. Now, as he shares his woeful tale with a horribly scarred whore (Youki Kudoh) whose knowledge of his long lost love's true fate may prove more of a curse than a blessing, Christopher is about to discover that there are times when death can be the kindest release of all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Posted by: from Burington, NC on 07/26/2009This is one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. I love it! I'm a fan of Takashi Miike's, he knows how to get under your skin. This is horror at it's finest. If you call yourself a horror fan, then you've got to get this movie!!!

One of the best in the Masters of Horror series!

Posted by: from Winston-Salem, NC on 07/25/2009This is one of the most disturbing films of the Masters of Horror series, my wife and I loved it! We're huge DVD collectors. We currently own just over 2,000 DVDs, almost half of which is horror. The reason I'm telling you this is because this movie just jumped into our top 20 for most disturbing. That includes some underground stuff we have that I can't talk about, and is NOT for the general public. (Hardcore horror collectors know what I'm talking about.) So, if you're like us and you like films that the more twisted and disturbing they are the better, then this is one you definitely want to check out. It's not the most horrific I've seen, but it'll still get you! I highly recommend it! Plus, some other good ones from the Masters of Horror series I recommend are Jenifer, Haekel's Tale, Cigarette Burns, and The Fair Haired Child.

Less horror, more disturbing

Posted by: from A2, MI on 04/17/2008I have to say I am quite the horror fan, and I love gore, especially old school cheesy gore. But I have to say, this film was done well, however, I have to warn you that it is very graphic. There have only been two movies of all that I have seen that have ever made me gag, and this was one of them. This is no spoiler, more just a warning, if you can't handle the sight of a dead fetus, do not watch this film. It also has few scenes of intense graphic torture that will make you cringe. Overall I'm undecided, it bothered me, but I liked it.

Not shown on Tv

Posted by: from Indiana on 10/14/2007This was the one that was not shown on tv. The reason was people involved thought it was too brutal of a film even for showtime. I liked it a lot and this was a well done film. Their is some intense torture scenes but if you are a horror fan you have seen way worse. Great story and acting.
