Weak reception for FM, HD

Posted by: DrVelocity from MD on 03/24/2013I should have paid attention to the reviews indicating that this unit has fairly weak radio reception, even for non-HD channels.
I was looking for a boom box format device for the living room area which is close to our kitchen where we use an ancient Sony boom box.
I saw the review indicating radio reception issues, but decided to take a chance. After all, my tiny portable Insignia gets multiple HD channels for each station of interest and sounds great, through headphones.
The CD function is fine for what I wanted, but being unable to use the radio, big problem. I suppose I could use my portable Insignia HD on the AUX input, but I doubt it, as the headphones are surely the antenna for the portable!
May use at work in the city.

A decnt value depending on where you live

The smaller Insigna radio actually does a decent job recieving HD Radio signals than this Boombox does. I live about 30 to 35 miles away from the Columbus area. HD Radio and Television signals can be more difficult to pull in than analog. However this unit seems to underperfrom compared to other HD radio tuners I have used. the sound is decent for the cost and the size isn't a bad value. However if you intend on using this radio and live where you either have hills or where you live outside of a major radio market area, you should probley consider purchasing another radio. The HD reception just isn't that great. And there still are not alot of choices when it comes to buying HD Radios. The smaller Insignia radio is a good value and the reception isnt really bad at all.

Inferior performance in weaker-signal areas

Posted by: JBeall from Stanwood, WA on 12/30/2012I'm in a hilly area about 50 miles from the major Seattle FM transmitter sites, and this radio performed much worse on HD here than the cheaper and smaller Insignia NS-HDRAD. The problem could probably be fixed with a more powerful antenna because just plugging some headphones into this unit boosted the signals quite a bit, but unlike the NS-HDRAD there is no input for an antenna beyond the telescoping rod, so you'd have to attach an additional antenna to the rod with alligator clips. If you're looking for an HD radio for $100 or less and reside in an area where indoor analog FM reception is mostly fuzzy, you're much better off with the more sensitive, adaptable and portable NS-HDRAD.
My other complaints are the lack of AM HD and the rather noisy buttons on the unit's top. The audio quality is about what I expected from speakers of this size, so you'd surely get an improvement patching the sound out of the headphone jack (which is inconveniently located on the rear) and running it through an amp and larger speakers. When I was able to get a steady HD signal on a few stations, the sound was fantastic CD-quality through headphones (which motivated me to try the NS-HDRAD before I took this radio back). I didn't experiment with the CD player or iPod dock.

Scan only tuning, no manual adjustment, didn't even find the stations I was looking for. Seems OK for an FM / strong AM listening device. I think someone's loading AM-HD radio into the Hearse for burial alongside BetaMax
Returned this junk to BestBuy for credit & replaced w/ Sangean PR-D5 from the same site, awesome sound, tuning, presets & more! It's an awesome device for less $$ than the Insignia PO$ (is that redundant?)

Posted by: RBGS from Maryland on 07/23/2012Returning today--bought yesterday...lightweight, but feels like it'll break into a billion pieces if you're not careful...I dont expect concert hall sound from a boombox, but a transistor radio has better sound...ipod not easily docked, HD radio reception nice, but never picks up stations' additional HD station programming--only the main station...I've wanted HD radio for years--now I dont think it's all that much better if this radio is any indication.

Died After 6 Months - Warranty Only 90 Days

One speaker failed after 6 months of only intermitten use at low volume, but when I went to get it replaced I learned that it has only a 90 day warranty. Several other buyers have had similar premature failure. No wonder warranty is only 90 days. And beware, it does NOT have an AM band, unlike virtually every boombox in existence.
