HD Radio - FM ONLY
4
Posted by: LtSiver from Michigan on 06/14/2013I picked up one of these for $40 on sale, with a $20 reward coupon, knocking the price down to $21.19 with tax. The reception is pretty good when using the included wire antenna that plugs into the back. For the size, the sound is pretty good. The reception of HD channels depends largely on your area, and how well you pick up FM stations in the area of your home you'd be using it at. In my kitchen near the sink and window above it, I get all my local HD radio stations, at a range of 40 to 60 miles from the broadcast towers. In my parent's house next door, it does not receive as well in their kitchen, only 104.3 came in with HD. (Detroit, MI market)
If you're thinking of trying a stand alone HD radio, this one is very reasonable - when you can catch it on sale.
It gets between 6-8 hours of battery life depending on if you use alkaline or rechargeable batteries, and comes with an AC adapter.
You can use it as a speaker, as it has an aux in jack, however the radio does not recall the last mode it was in - if you last used it on the Aux input, it will default to the last radio station it was on when you turn it on.

I'm glad I listened to my brother

Posted by: IndolenceOnParade from Washington DC on 06/14/2013My brother wouldn't stop bothering me until I got this exact radio, and boy was he right. I've got more radio station options now! And for such a small radio, the sound quality is amazing. I think the HD signal is the reason. I also use the earphone jack on this radio to plug it into my living room stereo, and now I can hear these HD stations on my wonderful speakers.
I don't need to buy every new gimmick that comes down the pike and I stayed away from HD radio for years because it was so expensive, but those days are over ... it ain't expensive now, and I'm very happy!

Needs Improvement

Posted by: mj12302 from Schenectady, NY on 05/08/2013Purchased this radio so I could listen to the many HD stations in my area. Was able to pick up most of them except for the main one I wanted to listen to, WGY-HD. I was unable to pick up the signal, even with the antenna fully extended and using the supplied wire antenna. Station drifted in and out. Same with some of the other channels. Some had great HD quality and some had static or fade. I think I will wait for better technology or for Sony to come out with one.

Good HD Radio
4
Posted by: HDradioBuyer from Portland, OR on 03/22/2013I've been listening to the Insignia tabletop HD radio for about a month now at work to a favorite station only available in this part of town on HD. A conventional desktop radio I tried had trouble pulling in many stations, but this HD radio has little trouble getting a clear signal. The sound quality is very high. It remembers the station I was on after being unplugged, which is nice. I use it with $20 Sony headphones, and I really like it. So far it has worked really well, and I recommend it. The only thing it could possibly use is a tone control or equalizer, as the sound is a little bass-heavy, although that may be the music and station. I wish HD radios and stations were more ubiquitous, they allow more stations on the air.
