Her approach to phrasing is nuanced and precise, and though her tone never turns with the delicacy of Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald, her ability to remake a song in her own image is reminiscent of those singers. JAZZ collects James's jazz recordings, which find the singer putting her indelible stamp on such gems as "Stormy Weather," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," and "Misty," among others. Most impressively, James never tries to sound "jazzy," but instead tackles each tune with her fundamental style, and pulls it off with absolute authority.
