Posted by: HotDawgy from Middle of Nowhere, AK on 01/06/2013Like Lunawolf360, I bought these from the South Anchorage Best Buy. I agree with everything they said, and will comment that where I've lived (currently rural Alaska), these things pick up RF frequencies like you can't believe. I had them set up in 3 different locations and the closer you are to a radio antenna, the worse it gets (obviously). The first 2 places I had them set up, you could faintly hear the radio station they pick up when there was nothing coming through them, and once you started playing audio through them, the sound disappeared. My current home is close to an FM antenna, and it picks up the sound so clearly (and audibly) that you can listen to the radio on them and hear everything. When you start playing audio through them, the audio conflicts with the RF frequencies and causes your audio to buzz in such a way that it sounds as though you've blown your speakers. It's absolutely AWFUL. I purchased some ferrite rings and purchased shielded cables, which yielded NO results. VERY frustrating. It's almost as if KRK failed to put ANY RF shielding in the unit at all! Reading the manual, this is briefly touched upon. They tell you how to set up your monitors in such a way to reduce/eliminate this issue. That didn't help me. I've kept my power cords and audio cables separated properly, I live in an almost-new building, so I shouldn't have bad wiring issues, and I keep my monitors away from the refrigerator and any fluorescent lighting. As I mentioned, the addition of ferrite rings and shielded cables didn't help either.
This would be a deal-breaker for me, but since I didn't discover the nature of the problem until after my 45 day return policy had expired, there was nothing I could do to return it. In fact, I had BBuy swap them out for me under warranty, thinking they had gone bad. Turns out they hadn't. :(
As for the units themselves, they are high-quality, heavy-duty (they're quite heavy for their size!), durable (fiberglass shells...don't drop them on a hard surface), and most importantly, they sound freaking AMAZING. They have excellent bass response with a very punchy low-end, and yet they have surprisingly clear mids and highs. These are good enough to power a small home/semi-pro studio and are THE perfect monitors to use with your home computer for high-quality audio when listening to your iTunes music collection. I currently use them as reference monitors for my DJ/production setup. They have clip indicators on the front in the form of a small red LED light on the front of each speaker behind the mesh guard, so you will absolutely know if you're pushing them too hard. Additionally, they have a built-in limiter in them as well, so the inexperienced can activate it and protect their investment from damage. Their volume levels are are intense...you can definitely hurt your hearing with these bad boys, and you could probably even use them to provide sound for a small house party (though I wouldn't recommend it...buy/rent a small PA for that). They have combo jacks on the back, so you can use them with either balanced XLR cables or 1/4" audio cables.
I purchased these over the VXT8's because of their price and the fact that my local BBuy had them in stock. I was happy that I could take them with me that day, as opposed to ordering the VXT8's online and waiting up to 2 weeks for them to be delivered. They would be the perfect speakers...except the RF frequency interference issues put a serious damper on their attractiveness and usability. I strongly caution you to test them thoroughly if you buy them (reading and following the suggestions in the manual), and if you find you suffer from the RF issues and it bothers you, return them. KRK engineered the VXTs this way...I don't understand the reasons, but the issue exists. Be warned!
I cautiously recommend them to other buyers...they are much better units than the lower-priced and lower-quality KRK Rockit series. Your mileage may vary from mine.
I'm also open to any suggestions people might have. It's quite possible I'm still doing something wrong, but I'm out of ideas as to what it would be.

Excellent Monitors, may have RF interference

Posted by: Lunawolf360 from Anchorage, AK on 11/11/2011I purchased these speakers from BB in my town a few months ago. The clarity is amazing and the power output is great for a small studio. Depending on the type of music you listen to or produce, a sub unit may be desired, but they do put out great bass when at high volumes. My only issue with these speakers is that they are prone to Radio Frequency interference. Regardless of where i place them, and no matter what type of cables used, they still pick up a faint signal from a nearby radio station. It is inaudible when playing sound through the speakers, but during dead silence times, it is noticeable when i put my ear near the speaker. Not a deal breaker, but an annoyance for sure. Overall a great product, just wish they put a little more effort into blocking out the RF interference.

Beware, price is only for one speaker....

Posted by: Benjammmmin from Salt Lake City on 04/12/2011Not only did I wait almost a month for delivery - as the item is back-ordered and not noted on the site, but it is also only for one speaker (not a pair). I am usually pretty cautious about this, as I have purchased many monitors in the past. All of the other KRK speakers are specifically listed as "(each)" except these. I am not willing to pay that much for an extra pair of speakers. I've heard they sound great - but I will never know.
