Release Notes

Killswitch Engage [2009]... [CD & DVD]: Release Notes: Muze
Full title: Killswitch Engage [2009] [Special Edition].Recording information: Henson Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA; Silent Sound Studios, Atlanta, GA; Southern Tracks, Atlanta GA; Wicked Good Studios, Southampton, MA; Zing Studios, Westfield, MA.Westfield, MA-based metalcore kings Killswitch Engage's fifth full-length album (and second eponymous release) was co-produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Mastodon) resulting in the group's most commercially viable collection of progressive/thrash/emo-metal to date. Where 2006's AS DAYLIGHT DIES hinted at an accelerated focus on the more melodic aspects of extreme metal, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE cements the notion. After a typically brutal opener that epitomizes the band's penchant for scorching death metal verses and sweeping, melodious choruses, the quintet spits out the radio-ready "Starting Over." Flanked by dual guitar leads that echo classic Iron Maiden shot through with a truly great vocal take from lead singer Howard Jones (who sounds remarkably like a classically trained Trent Reznor throughout the album), it's one of the disc's finest moments. The remainder of the record follows a significantly different template, trading tight machine-gun riffs ("Save Me," "A Light in a Darkened World") for angst-fueled midtempo dirges ("Lost," "This Is Goodbye") that might disappoint fans who feel that the punk-infused slow-burn post-hardcore albums like ALIVE or JUST BREATHING and END OF HEARTACHE are the barometers for which all future endeavors must be compared.

Posted by: from St.Petersburg,Fl on 07/09/2009Great c.d but not excellent, it could of been better and a little less screaming and yelling. But this band rocks on ice, this band rocks my socks.

Not what I expected/wanted...

Posted by: from Chandler, AZ on 07/01/2009I love KSE I have been a fan for years and gone to every concert in town here and some in Cali. It kills me to rate their music this low but they have totally changed. The guitar riffs are way softer and not as bold as past CDs. Howard does not scream nearly as much as before, it's mostly singing. (He is a good singer but I'm a metal head). This CD is good and still better than most music out there but if your a die hard KSE fan you may be dissapointed... I am.

Killswitch Engage back in full force!!!

Posted by: from on 06/30/2009Killswitch Engage bring us back into their world of heavy/melodic lyrcis, pounding bass from the rhythm section and the combination of in your face metal gutiar, with melodic undertones. This album is much better than "As Daylight Dies". This album is highly recommended for KSE fans, both new and old.

Great CD, but NOT DVD

Posted by: from Hollywood, CA on 06/28/2009I just got the cd with my pre-order yesterday, and while it's an AMAZING album, you're better off just buying the standard edition and downloading the 1 bonus studio track. The DVD is, in my opinion, very badly edited, and doesn't really give you any insight into the band or the process they went through while writing this album. If you want to know what a good bonus DVD is, check out Chimaira's The Infection. Not only is it in HD, but the band actually talks about the work they put into making the album and show you how the music progressed through time. The artwork throughout the album is amazing, and I would expect no less from someone as talented as Mike D. The cd is VERY worth it, but save yourself the 5 extra bucks and get the standard edition.

Killswitch at its finest
5
Posted by: from Bangor, ME on 06/25/2009Ive been a huge Killswitch Engage fan for years and this is the best album ever. They mixed it up a little bit by giving you the in your face metal sound to the softcore sound. Howard's vocals in this are amazing and the bands sound is at its finest. I would buy this album if your a killswitch fan and if not you will once you listen to this cd.

They've Done It Again
5
Posted by: from on 06/21/2009This is one heck of an album from Killswitch Engage. They've done it again. Howard's vocals are amazing on this album, best yet I'd have to say. From slower songs like The Return to the heavy growls of The Reckoning. The guitar work is amazing too. They've outdone themselves again! If you're a fan of Killswitch Engage or metal in general, you will definitely not be disappointed!

Their best CD by far!!!
5
Posted by: from Huntington Beach, CA on 06/20/2009I just heard the whole CD at an in-store promotion except for the one studio bonus track on the CD/DVD version! The guitars are much more varied (think Misery SIgnals), the production is MUCH better and richer, and the songwriting is easily their best yet! I though after their last album this would suck too, but I was blown away! Best Buy has the best price I've seen on the CD/DVD (even better than Hot Topic!!) so I will definetely be there when they open on 6/30!! My only gripe is they claim 4 bonus tracks, but only one is a true bonus track (an outtake from the album) while the rest are live versions of songs from older albums. It makes no sense for the live tracks to be there. I might add they've included a live version of "Rose Of Sharyn" on another special edition CD so I REALLY see no need for yet another version!

Alternative Press (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "KILLSWITCH ENGAGE is a concise encapsulation of everything KSE do well....It's a meat-and-potatoes guitar-bass-drums record..."Alternative Press - "It's a meat-and-potatoes guitar-bass-drums record; some tastefully melancholy piano on the album-closing 'This Is Goodbye' is one of few instrumental adornments."Billboard (p.28) - "[With] focused aggression and predicatable melodic swells, you can't help but enjoy such quintessential Killswitch Engage tracks as 'Never Again' or the Mettalica-esque chords that open 'The Forgotten'..."Record Collector (magazine) (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he Killswitch sound is a good one. 'A Light In A Darkened World, 'This Is Goodbye' and 'The Forgotten' demonstrate the scope of the band's ambition..."
