The Wireless-G WRT54GL Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which connects both screaming fast Wireless-G (IEEE 802.11g at 54 Mbps) and Wireless-B (IEEE 802.11b at 11 Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connects wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as needed. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and the whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

Fine for limited uses

Posted by: from Cleveland,OH on 05/06/2013Though not an IT pro, I know several and so asked them for recommendations. They said this was "the DC3 of wireless routers" and still more than up to my limited needs: mostly email and web browsing (no gaming, streaming video, etc.). It's apparently been around for years and has a great rep --- was once the benchmark, I gather. Has therefore both the pros and cons of older tried&true products: Nothing new and fancy, but all the bugs are long since gone, it's simple to set up b/c it is pretty basic, tech support types tend to know it and know what to do when you call with questions, etc. On the other hand, it's not as fast and so forth as the newer stuff, will get only more obsolete sooner than the newer models, and so forth. In short, it works fine for me for now, just as my friends told me. And it should be OK for a good while longer, I figure.

Great basic router

Posted by: from North Chili, NY on 05/04/2013I've been using this router in my home for years and it is still running as good as it was on day 1. It's not an N router, but that shouldn't make a big difference to most people. It is DD-WRT compatible. Great as a primary router or a secondary access point. I have mine in my basement and can get a good signal in my bedroom.

Posted by: from lunenburg ma on 03/08/2013I was a little concerned with the price compared to the last one I had. I was very surprised how much better it worked. Was defiantly worth the price.

Posted by: from New York, NY on 01/03/2013This Linksys wrt54g router was originally released over 10 years ago, and this version has all the good design elements of the model. For most "normal" users, just plug in, set a secure wireless password (use WPA), and you're set. Get this router if any of the following are true: - You have at least 1 wireless device that's 802.11 b or g. If all your wireless devices are "n", then get a wireless "n" router to take full advantage of the "n" speed. - You have at least 1 WIRED device that's 100Mbit ethernet. If all wired devices are 1G, get a gigabit router. - Your broadband service is 25Mbit/sec or less. If you have 75Mbit FIOS, get a gigabit router. For geeks only: The WRT54GL can take modifications from super-sized antennas, to open-source software that can turn it into a router costing hundreds more. If you're a software and/or hardware hack, then forget about it -- the sky's the limit! Good Starter Router

Posted by: from CO on 11/20/2011I bought this router at the same time I purchased my first laptop around six years ago. I didn't know anything about routers and this happened to be the one the sales associate picked out for me (it was only $50 back then though). I've had this router through two moves and two laptops and it has never had any issues. Very easy set-up. I'm now looking to upgrade to an N router because my household has outgrown this one. It was pretty fast when I only had a laptop connected to it, but now I also have a tablet, a Wii and a Roku and it's slowed down considerably. I can only use one of those things at a time or else it takes FOREVER for things to load. But if you have only a few things to hook up, this is great. But I wouldn't pay $70 for it. The range is also very good. I live in a three story house and there's nowhere this doesn't work.
