M*A*S*H: Welcome to Korea, Part 1
Season Four of M*A*S*H (now moved to Friday evenings) begins with the ever-irritating Maj. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) assuming command of the 4077th after the death of easygoing Col. Henry Blake. Returning from an R-and-R session, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) discovers that his old buddy Trapper John (Wayne Rogers) has been shipped out without so much as a goodbye. The sullen Hawkeye is then sent Kimpo to pick up Trapper's clean-cut replacement, B.J. Hunnicut (Mike Farrell in his first series appearance), whose spotless record leads Frank and Hot Lips (Loretta Swit) to the premature conclusion that, at long last, the joyful slovenliness of the 4077th will be replaced by traditional military spit-and-polish. The first of the series' 60-minute "special" episodes, Welcome to Korea has since been divided into two half-hour episodes for syndication. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Change of Command
Still in charge of the 4077th, Maj. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) arrogantly lords it over his subordinates. Things change when the unit's new commanding officer, Col. Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan), arrives at the camp. A old "regular army" man, Potter at first seems to be sympatico to the martinet Burns--but soon proves to be more in tune with the breezy irreverence of chief surgeons Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: It Happened One Night
The weather outside is below freezing and the enemy shelling is relentless as the 4077th tries to deal with a fresh supply of incoming wounded. The rattled surgeons try to save the life of an equally nervous patient--and it's a toss-up as to who is more scared. Somehow or other, Frank (Larry Linville) finds time to rifle through Hot Lips' tent in search of compromising letters. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: Welcome to Korea, Part 2
In the conclusion of M*A*S*H's Season Four opener, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) escorts B. J. Hunnicut (Mike Farrell), the likeable replacement of Hawkeye's old pal Trapper John, back to the 4077th. En route, B.J. gets his first taste of "surgery under fire"--and Hawkeye realizes that he's found a kindred spirit. Imagine the surprise of strutting martinet Frank Burns (Larry Linville) when the "strait-laced" B.J. turns out to be just as cheeky and irreverent as Hawkeye; clearly, it's going to be business as usual for the rest of the War. The first of the series' 60-minute "special" episodes, Welcome to Korea has since been divided into two half-hour episodes for syndication. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Late Captain Pierce
Thanks to a bureaucratic snafu, the father of chief surgeon Hawkeye (Alan Alda) receives a letter informing him that his son is dead. Though upset that his dad is in temporary distress, the very much alive Hawkeye intends to take advantage of his "deceased" state--at least until he is denied his weekly paycheck. Later on, Hawkeye discovers that it's harder to prove that he's alive than dead; after all, the Army never, ever makes mistakes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Bus
While driving Hawkeye (Alan Alda), Potter (Harry Morgan) and Frank (Larry Linville) from a faraway surgical meeting, Radar gets lost in what may be North Korean-held territory. Things don't improve much when the bus that Radar has commandeered becomes stalled. Salvation arrives from a most unlikely source--and an "enemy" one at that. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Kids
The "kids" in this episode include a group of Korean orphans who take refuge at the 4077th when their living quarters are bombed. Not surprisingly, everyone in the unit takes the youngsters to their hearts except the xenophobic Frank Burns (Larry Linville). And there's even more on the way, as the doctors deal with an "incoming" baby. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Dear Peggy
B.J. (Mike Farrell) recounts the week's events at the 4077th in a letter to his wife Peggy. Highlight include a visit from a no-nonsense Army chaplain (Ned Beatty), a series of zany escape attempts by Klinger (Jamie Farr), and a classic snafu courtesy of Frank Burns (Larry Linville). With this episode, M*A*S*H moved briefly from Friday to Tuesday evening. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Dear Ma
This time it is Radar's (Gary Burghoff) turn to recap the zany happenings at the 4077th in a letter home. Writing to his mother, Radar invokes such highlights as the camp's annual foot inspection, this year handled by a reluctant Hawkeye (Alan Alda). On a more delicate note, Radar recalls the shrapnel wound endured by Col. Potter (Harry Morgan)--an injury as embarrassing as it is painful. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: The Price of Tomato Juice
Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) loves tomato juice, but the stuff is hard to come by. Hoping to acquire a steady supply of the precious red beverage, Radar (Gary Burghoff), Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell) again join forces. It turns out that the tomato-juice trail is infested with innumerable exchanged favors--some of them bizarre in the extreme. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Mail Call, Again
In this second episode of M*A*S*H's unofficial "mail call" trilogy, Frank (Larry Linville) receives word that his wife plans to divorce him (the "secret" affair with Hot Lips [Loretta Swit] is secret no more), while Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) is told that he's about to become a grandfather. But the most compelling package from home is a reel of 8-millimeter family movies sent to Radar (Gary Burghoff). And yes, the "actress" playing Radar's mom is just who you think it is. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Gun
With this episode, M*A*S*H relinquished its fourth-season Friday night timeslot and returned to its familiar Tuesday-evening berth. A wounded colonel (Warren Stevens) arrives at the 4077th with his prized possession, a rare old Colt. 45. Covetous Frank (Larry Linville) filches the weapon and allows Radar (Gary Burghoff) to take the rap. B.J. (Mike Farrell) and Hawkeye (Alan Alda) join forces to give Frank his comeuppance. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Soldier of the Month
Faced with a fever epidemic, Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) comes up with a morale-boosting contest. The grand prize, a six-day leave to Tokyo, means little to Frank Burns (Larry Linville), who is mistakenly convinced that he's dying. The story reaches a hilarious climax as Frank dictates his will, providing equally (?) for both the women in his life. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Of Moose and Men
Hawkeye (Alan Alda) earns the undying enmity of grumpy Artillery colonel Spiker (Tim O'Connor) when he splatters mud on the unforgiving officer. Elsewhere, Frank (Larry Linville) searches high and low for an enemy saboteur, and B.J. (Mike Farrell) offers advice and comfort to the cuckolded Sgt. Zale (Johnny Haymer). Best moment: Hawkeye's sarcastic response to Col. Spiker's climactic "absolution." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler
The staff of the 4077th is confounded by Captain Chandler (Alan Fudge), a wounded soldier who claims to be Jesus Christ. While compassionate psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) tries to talk sense to Chandler, paranoid CIA man Col Flagg (Edward Winter) treats the would-be Messiah as a security risk. It is up to Radar (Gary Burghoff) to find the best way to defuse the present divinical dilemma. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Dear Mildred
Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) writes home to his wife Mildred on the occasion of their 27th wedding anniversary. Hoping to curry favor with their new commander, Frank (Larry Linville) and Hot Lips (Loretta Swit) secretly commission a special wood carving. But it is Radar (Gary Burghoff) who wins the Colonel's heart by rescuing an old Cavalry horse. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Hey, Doc
Some fancy horse-trading (without any horses) distinguishes this episode. In order to acquire a tank to scare off enemy snipers, the doctors of the 4077th must agree to administer an "illegal" penicillin shot. And in a related development, two precious bottles of Scotch are bartered for a bit of under-the-counter surgery. These are but two of the many "special favors" which pass through the surgical tents on this particular evening. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Der Tag
The terminally irritating Frank Burns (Larry Linville) is more obnoxious than ever now that Hot Lips (Loretta Swit) is on assignment in Tokyo. Deluged with complaints about Burns' behavior, Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) suggests a "counter-offensive": Maybe if everyone was nice to Frank, he'd calm down himself. The camp struggles valiantly to follow Potter's advice--with bizarre results. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Some 38th Parallels
Several different subplots are followed in parallel development in this episode. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) wants to make a profit by selling the 4077's garbage, at least before the Koreans have made off with the refuse themselves. Meanwhile, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) clashes with a wounded colonel (Kevin Hagen), a demands that dead bodies be retrieved from the battle field--and never mind that this action will result in even more fatalities. Ultimately, Frank's problem becomes Hawkeye's solution. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Hawkeye
Alan Alda delivers what amounts to a solo performance in this landmark episode. Suffering a serious concussion after a jeep accident far from the 4077th, Hawkeye (Alda) takes refuge in the home of a Korean family. Realizing that he must stay awake if he hopes to stay alive until help arrives, Hawkeye launches into a rambling, free-form sometimes non-sequitur monologue, while the Koreans listen in rapt--and uncomprehending--attention. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Novocaine Mutiny
Actor Harry Morgan takes on role of director for this episode.. During the absence of Col. Potter, Frank (Larry Linville) demands that Hawkeye (Alan Alda) be court-martialed for mutiny. Conducting a preliminary hearing, Col. Carmichael (Ned Wilson) hears both sides of the events which led up to Hawkeye's arrest. As usual, the outcome is none too satisfactory for Frank--in fact, it's downright humiliating when all the facts are revealed. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: The More I See You
Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is unexpectedly reunited with Nurse Carlye Breslin (Blythe Danner), the only woman he ever wanted to marry. Now, however, Carlye is the wife of another man. This puts Hawkeye in an uncomfortable position, especially when Carlye's transfer to the 4077th threatens to become a permanent issue. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Interview
M*A*S*H digresses from its standard format in this episode, which originally closed out the series' fourth season. Filmed in black and white, the episode is staged in the form of an interview conducted for American television by visiting war correspondent Clete Roberts (playing himself). In a progression of largely improvised segments, the series' entire cast (with the exception of Loretta Swit) offer their views on the war, their work, and their hopes for the future. The most compelling moment occurs when Father Mulcahy (William Christopher), describing a macabre encounter with the wounded, burst into tears. The first of two such "documentary" episodes, The Interview was the final M*A*S*H effort overseen by writer-producer-director Larry Gelbart, who would soon leave the series. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Deluge
The title of this episode is a gross understatement. Actually the 4077th is plagued with three deluges: rain, fire, and an overabundance of incoming wounded. An unexpected enemy offensive has exarcerbated the situation--and as the men and women of M*A*S*H go to work, it is with the realization that things could become far worse at any minute. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Smilin' Jack
Bedfellows don't come much stranger than two of the latest patients at the 4077th. Hotshot chopper pilot "Smilin' Jack" Mitchell (Robert Hogan) can't wait to get back into action, even though the doctors feel that he'd be better off grounded. Conversely, Cpl. Howard Owens (Dennis Kort), two-time winner of the Purple Heart, wants to be retired from combat, but no one will issue him a discharge. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
