    M*A*S*H: A Full Rich Day
Hawkeye (Alan Alda) once again takes up pen and paper to write a letter to his father. As usual, he recounts the week's misadventures at the 4077th -- or in this case, the events during a single day. Highlights include a beserk Turkish soldier (Sirri Murad), a frenzied search for the corpse of a dead Luxembourg soldier (or at least everyone thought he was dead), and a run-in with an officer who is a bit too quick on the trigger. "A Full Rich Day" first aired on December 3, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Alcoholics Unanimous
When Frank Burns (Larry Linville) is put in charge of the 4077th in the absence of Col. Blake, the staff braces itself for the usual "orders are orders, rules are rules" nonsense. But every outrage committed by Frank in the past pales into insignificance when the power-mad CO declares a ban on liquor -- and even goes so far as to dismantle the officers' beloved still. Will Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) be able to restore their divine right to get good and plastered during their off-hours? "Alcoholics Unanimous" first aired on November 12, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Bombed
Heavy bombing brings heavy wounded into the operating room of the 4077th. Still, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) finds ample time to needle his old nemesis, Frank Burns (Larry Linville). Seething with jealousy fomented by the capricious Hawkeye, Frank ends up proposing to his wartime sweetie Hot Lips (Loretta Swit), but what's he going to do with his wife back home? "Bombed" first aired on January 7, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Check-Up
It is time for the men and women of 4077th to undergo their annual medical checkup. When Radar (Gary Burghoff) is diagnosed with an ulcer, it looks as though he'll be shipped stateside, an event which calls for a gala farewell party. On a darker note, the usually cheerful Trapper (Wayne Rogers) unexpectedly bristles at the notion of being examined, and doesn't care who knows it -- but only at the end of the episode does he explain why. "Check-Up" originally aired on October 22, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Iron Guts Kelly
James Gregory, of Barney Miller fame, guest stars as celebrated American General "Iron Guts" Kelly. During his visit to the 4077th, Kelly abruptly dies in action -- said "action" being conducted in the bed of Maj. Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit). Hoping to head off an embarrassing public-relations boondoggle, Kelly's aide, Col. Wortman (Keene Curtis), conspires with Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) to fabricate a more "heroic" demise for the hapless general. "Iron Guts Kelly" first aired on October 1, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Love and Marriage
Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) try to dissuade a wide-eyed American GI from marrying a disease-ridden Korean bar girl. The two doctors also try to cut through the usual red tape so that a Korean soldier can be with his wife when she gives birth. As often happens, it is meek company clerk Radar (Gary Burghoff) who solves everyone's problems. "Love and Marriage" was originally broadcast on February 18, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: O.R.
The first M*A*S*H episode without a prerecorded laugh track, "O.R.," per its title, takes place entirely in the operating room of the 4077th. As the wounded continue to pour in at an alarming rate, Hawkeye (Alan Alda), Trapper (Wayne Rogers), and the rest of the staff struggle to maintain their sanity -- and, hopefully, their sense of humor. They are aided and abetted by visiting psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus), whose laid-back ministrations come in handy when Hawkeye abruptly loses a young patient after heart-massaging the boy back to life. This episode was based on the actual experiences of the 8055th, the Korean-War MASH unit that served as inspiration for the 4077th, and which once treated over 5,000 casualties during a two-month period. "O.R." was originally broadcast on October 8, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Abyssinia, Henry
Originally telecast March 18, 1975, as the finale of M*A*S*H's third season, "Abyssinia, Henry" is one of the series' most celebrated episodes. At long last, Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) has received his discharge papers and is being sent home. A huge party is staged in Henry's honored, highlighted by Klinger's (Jamie Farr) imitation of Carmen Miranda. And throughout the story, the reactions of the different staffers are given plenty of air time, especially those of the rank-conscious Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and the melancholy Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff). Even after all these years, the episode's famous final scene still packs a wallop -- and remember, none of the actors (save one) knew exactly what that final scene would be until the cameras started rolling. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: There is Nothing Like a Nurse
The threat of an enemy parachute drop forces Col. Blake (McLean Stevenson) to order an evacuation of the 4077th nurses. With no females in the vicinity, the camp's morale plunges to an all time low. But never fear, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Radar (Wayne Rogers) are on hand to provide their own special band of diversionary entertainment. "There Is Nothing Like a Nurse" was originally telecast on November 19, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: The General Flipped at Dawn
M*A*S*H moved from Saturday to Tuesday evening for its third-season opener, "The General Flipped at Dawn." Harry Morgan makes his first appearance on the series -- not in his soon-to-be familiar role of Col. Potter, but as Two-Star General Bartford Hamilton Steele. Determined to whip the 4077th into shape, the merciless Steele strikes terror in the hearts of everyone except gung-ho Frank Burns (Larry Linville). But soon even Frank must admit what is painfully obvious: The old General is as nutty as a fruitcake. The episode's court-martial climax is one of the series' most hilariously outrageous moments. "The General Flipped at Dawn" first aired on September 10, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Consultant
Robert Alda, father of series star Alan Alda, makes the first of two M*A*S*H guest appearances, here cast as the brilliant and famous Dr. Anthony Borelli. Arriving at the 4077th, Dr. Borelli is challenged to demonstrate his revolutionary arterial-transplant technique under wartime conditions. Unfortunately, three wars have taken an awful emotional toll on Borelli, and his heavy drinking gets the best of him before he is able to enter the O.R. "The Consultant" was first broadcast on January 21, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Springtime
Everyone in the 4077th has spring fever, and few are more "feverish" than Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson), who decides to take advantage of a lull in hostilities by shooting a few rounds of golf. Elsewhere, Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) relies upon a balky short-wave radio to perform a marriage ceremony between Klinger and his Toledo-based sweetheart; a grateful patient (Alex Karras) inextricably attaches himself to a bewildered Hawkeye (Alan Alda); and Radar falls for a nurse who shares his love of poetry. Said nurse is played by comedienne Mary Kay Place, who also co-wrote the script. "Springtime" first aired on October 15, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Rainbow Bridge
Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) are just about to depart for some much-needed R & R when they are summoned to attend a POW exchange between the U.S.A. and the Communists. Heading deep into enemy territory, the two doctors, accompanied by Frank (Larry Linville), Radar (Gary Burghoff), and Klinger (Jamie Farr), can only cross their fingers and hope that everything goes off without a hitch. What they don't count on is that the paranoid Frank has a very itchy trigger finger. Singer/composer Loudon Wainwright III makes his first series appearance as Captain Spalding. "Rainbow Bridge" was originally telecast on September 17, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Private Charles Lamb
Grateful that the doctors of the 4077th have saved his life, an effusive Greek colonel (Titos Vandis) provides the camp with an extra-special Easter dinner -- namely, a live baby lamb. But when softhearted Radar (Gary Burghoff) bonds with the warm-and-fuzzy critter, he despairs at the thought of his new friend being cooked and eaten. Thus is born that celebrated Iowa serviceman, Charles Lamb -- and thus are Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) forced to unveil that tasty new delicacy, "Spam Lamb." And on a more serious note, a soldier who shot himself to get a medical discharge unwittingly confesses his indiscretion to the rule-bound Frank Burns (Larry Linville). "Private Charles Lamb" originally aired on December 31, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Payday
Temporary paymaster Hawkeye (Alan Alda) finds himself in possession of an expected monetary surplus. He generously uses the money to help the orphans under the care of Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) -- only to discover that the Army wants the cash back, and wants it now. As Trapper (Wayne Rogers) tries to save the day in a marathon poker game, on another front, Frank (Larry Linville) tries to make both the women in his life happy, a scheme doomed to hilarious failure. "Payday" first aired on March 4, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Officer of the Day
With Col. Blake in Seoul, Frank (Larry Linville) and Margaret (Loretta Swit) are left in charge of the 4077th, while Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is appointed officer of the day. No sooner has this been settled than Hawkeye has a run-in with his old nemesis, CIA agent Col. Flagg (Edward Winter). With his usual mixture of imperiousness and paranoia, Flagg demands that a captured North Korean be quickly patched up in the operating room for the purposes of interrogation -- and later, execution. "Officer of the Day" was first broadcast on September 24, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: White Gold
Someone is stealing penicillin from the 4077th, and hyperneurotic CIA officer Col Flagg (Edward Winter) wants to get to the bottom of the mystery. Not that he is at all concerned about the ailing patients; it's simply that Flagg intends to use the penicillin as a bargaining chip for information from the enemy. A sudden (and convenient) attack of appendicitis brings this particular caper to a capper. "White Gold" originally aired on March 11, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Mad Dogs and Servicemen
Col. Blake (McLean Stevenson) organizes a search party for the dog that bit his clerk, Radar (Gary Burghoff). Blake can't be sure, but the pooch may have been rabid -- and if so, the consequences for Radar are too unpleasant to imagine. Meanwhile, the staff wonders why the usually compassionate Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is treating a paralyzed soldier (Michael O'Keefe) in so brusque and cold a fashion. "Mad Dogs and Servicemen" originally aired on December 10, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Life with Father
When a Jewish GI insists upon a circumcision for his Korean-born son, it is up to Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) to function as "substitute rabbi" during the ceremonial briss. Meanwhile, Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) is presented with evidence suggesting that his wife is "stepping out" on him during his absence. The script was written by Everett Greenbaum and Jim Fritzell, best known for their prolific contributions to The Andy Griffith Show. "Life with Father" was originally telecast on October 29, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: House Arrest
After punching Frank (Larry Linville) in the eye -- accidentally, of course -- Hawkeye (Alan Alda) faces court martial. Placed under house arrest, Hawkeye makes the best of the situation by inviting his friends into his tent for some convivial drinking, conversation, and the screening of the 1945 film masterpiece Leave Her to Heaven (a scratchy black-and-white print, alas). Meanwhile, Frank is falsely accused of rape by the visiting female army investigator Col. Rachel Reese (Mary Wickes). Originally slated to air on January 14, 1975, "House Arrest" ultimately debuted on February 4th of that same year. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Bulletin Board
In this virtually plotless episode, the notices on the 4077th's bulletin board cue the various segments. Within a half-hour's time, the viewer bears witness to yet another sex-education lecture from the clueless officers, the screening of an old Shirley Temple movie, and the ongoing efforts to stage a camp picnic. Needless to say, the events which transpire don't turn out quite as expected. "Bulletin Board" originally aired on January 14, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Big Mac
The 4077th goes into full panic mode, preparing for a scheduled visit from General Douglas MacArthur. Frank (Larry Linville) bristles with militaristic pride in anticipation of meeting his idol, while Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) carp over MacArthur's monumental ego. Meanwhile, Klinger (Jamie Farr) dresses for the occasion -- as the Statue of Liberty. "Big Mac" originally aired on February 25, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Adam's Ribs
Fed up with the usual bill of fare in the 4077th's mess tent -- namely, "a river of liver and an ocean of fish" -- Hawkeye (Alan Alda) threatens to wreak havoc on cooks and diners alike. In desperation, Hawkeye joins forces with Trapper (Wayne Rogers) and Radar (Gary Burghoff) to order a carry-out dinner of delectable barbecued spare ribs -- from Hawkeye's favorite restaurant in Chicago. Alas, the precious ribs are put on the back burner when the latest batch of wounded arrive. "Adam's Ribs" was first broadcast on November 26, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Aid Station
Hawkeye (Alan Alda), Margaret (Loretta Swit), and Klinger (Jamie Farr) are assigned to special duty at a medical aid station on the front lines. At first, these very diverse characters get along about as copacetically as oil and water. But after several hours of working together under fire with little but their wits and courage to keep them going, the three M*A*S*H stalwarts develop a new respect for one another. "Aid Station" first aired on February 11, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
