Was OK, now won't get past the startup screen.1

I have to say that I bought this when they were $250 and used it for around a year. Although it worked ok it was slow on startup and was showing roads where they don't exist, and never have. We have a walking path next to our yard and this thing wants me to drive on it everytime I go somewhere. Now to the bad part, it doesn't start up anymore. One day it was being used it just locked up and wouldn't restart. I then took it inside and fully charged it and then it would restart but would sit on the Magellan screen with the little sweeping clock on the bottom showing that it was loading. Then it goes to the screen showing to connect it to a computer. This prompted me to hit the RESET switch on top. Multiple tries later it did nothing. Then I tried updating the software through the software they want you to use. Multiple tries later and it just keeps telling me that it was successful but it doesn't update and the issue is still there. A total waste of money in my opinion. Stay away from them as they will not answer emails or the technical phone line. Good luck if you buy one.3 out of 3 found this review helpful.

The size is very good. I use it in my Motor Home as my back up camera monitor in addition to using the GPS function. Because of this feature I'm really trying hard to make one work. This is my second one (same model) as the first. The first one went bad right after the warranty was up. This one is only a month old and already having battery charging and then holding problem. Magellan does not repair these or even replace batteries! My Garmin 200 Nuvi is 3 years old and always works well for less than 1/2 the cost of one of these. This GPS works OK as long as you know where you're going and how to get there. I realize that everything can't be updated instantly but the first thing you have to do with this is download the update. Then you find out the update is way out of date and the dang thing takes you to dead end streets with walls built across the road and not new walls. It'll tell you to turn where a road used to be...a very long time ago. And Magellan will let you buy the new outdated map update release for the price of another unit. I just don't think this is a very good business practice. This is the last magellan product I'll ever buy.11 out of 11 found this review helpful.

Bought this one after having calibration issues with two Garmin Nuvis in a row. So far this GPS has performed very well. As an avid Geocacher as well I was hoping that I could upload GC details and use it for some paperless caching given that I already had a Magellan handheld. I have yet to figure out how, if even possible, I may have wrongfully assumed the 250 waypoints included having the ability to transfer from the computer. other than that, how can you not love that big bright screen? And no performance issues to date.3 out of 4 found this review helpful.

The Magellan 1700 is one of the best GPS I’ve ever owned. I really like the huge 7” display which fits nicely on my Mustang’s dash board. It’s worth noting how well the interface is. It seems like they designed the user interface with the driver in mind. For example, the sound button is on the main screen and touching it brings up the volume/mute functions. I’ve owned other GPS devices that required me to go into the settings to make these kinds of changes. One feature worth mentioning is the ability to scroll past your current location on the map. You just touch the map and drag it around to see what’s coming up beyond your location. I can’t say enough good things about this model and I’m very happy with the purchase so far. If you are in the market for a new GPS you need to consider this one.
The Good:
-7” display – it’s huge compared to all others.
-Best rerouting of any GPS I’ve owned. (quick)
-Touch screen allows you to drag the map ahead of where you are so you can see what’s coming.
-Very simple/intuitive interface
-Decent anti-glare screen
-Automatically turns to daylight mode at night.
-The price. At $150 this device is a great deal.
The Bad:
-At times, the interface is kind of sluggish. This is not a deal breaker because my TomTom does the same thing at times.
-The Magellan is heavy so if you attach it to your windshield it will start to point downward as you drive. Again, not really a problem if you mount it close to your dash board.24 out of 25 found this review helpful.

THIS GPS WAS A GIFT FROM MY KIDS FOR CHRISTMAS... IT WAS THE BEST GIFT EVER. I AM A VISITING NURSE AND MY DAY IS SPENT DRIVING TO ADDRESSES UNKNOWN TO ME. MY DAYS OF MAP READING ARE OVER. MY OLD TATTERED MAP BOOKS ARE OUT THE WINDOW---THIS GPS SAVED THE DAY FOR ME ON MANY OCCASSIONS. ITS EASY TO USE, EASY TO SEE AND VOLUME IS ADJUSTABLE SO I JUST SET THE ADDRESS, PUT IT IN THE SEAT NEXT TO ME AND IT TALKS ME THERE.....ITS THE BEST THING FOR MY JOB. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS UNIT AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE.20 out of 25 found this review helpful.

We were given one of these units as an anniversary gift. It was never very good.
It would take a very very long time to aquire the sat signal and it eventually completely stopped all together.
While driving it did a good job alerting you to an upcoming turn, however once you made that turn we would often have to pull over and wait because it would take 2 minutes to let you know what the next thing to do was.
You can cover alot of distance in 2 minutes and be way past what was supposed to be the next turn.
Yes we updated everything but it just never worked properly.15 out of 29 found this review helpful.

I am really unhappy with the Magellan 1700. We are unable to enter coordinates which we use for gold prospecting. I miss my Garmin and would never purchase another brand. The magellan is more sensitive when you are off road picking up a signal. Never had that problem with the Garmin.10 out of 18 found this review helpful.

I love the size of this unit as large enough to see on a glance even. Easy to use, great functionality. I wish the info bars with miles per hr, etc would stay on the screen without minimizing. But all in all, I love this GPS!4 out of 5 found this review helpful.

I primarilly bought the Magellen 1700 GPS to be able to have a back up camera function assuming that the GPS would be like all others to some extent and it is. Its' functions allow use when towing my 5th wheel and give early warning for turns and route changes, plus there is software available to load trucking data into the unit should I so choose. My biggest issue is the camera function has not worked at all and not that Best Buy and Magellen haven't tried to get it working like advertised, because they have. It now is being exchanged for another unit by Magellen and the assumption is that this will resolve the problem. Best Buy has tested every thing and agrees that the unit is suspect so must wait for the new one to have closure.7 out of 8 found this review helpful.

Had this unit just over a year when it started having problems...issues with charging, locking up, and the need to re-boot. Bought a new charger which worked for a while, then failed again. I finally scrapped this unit, stuck it in a drawer and use the function VZ Navigator on my Blackberry. Not as feature-rich but dependable and portable.7 out of 8 found this review helpful.

Very Large, Be Sure You Have Space For It4

Bought this to replace a Magellan 1412 that gave up the ghost. I didn't really care that it lacks traffic updates, but the fact that it doesn't include free map updates is a pain. Lack of Bluetooth was not a problem for me.
The mounting system leaves something to be desired. I could not use my "beanbag" mount because the mounting bracket raises this large unit so high that it will hit the windshield. The unit is so heavy that you basically want to suction cup it to the windshield, with the bottom of it supported by the top of the dashboard. This is stable, but you can't remove it from the slide-in mount without removing it from the windshield. I may try to fabricate a better mount that goes into the ball socket..
The unit has an A/V input for video in from a back-up camera (or other source) but there is absolutely no information about this in the manual, which also states you need a 3.5" plug (in reality it's a 3.5mm plug). These plugs are common, but the pin-out varies widely for video and audio and ground, and some are four conductor (R&L Audio, Video, and Ground). I read on a forum that the Apple iPod A/V cable is what you want, ($2.79 from DealExtreme).
The unit is powered by a 2 amp 5 volt cigarette lighter plug with a barrel connector. USB is only guaranteed to provide 500mA (though in reality it almost always goes closer to 1000mA), but even that's not enough current for this unit. There's a separate USB socket for connecting to a computer, but it doesn't power or charge the unit. If you want to power from A/C you'll have to buy a 5V 2000mA AC adapter with the proper plug on it.
Like most vehicle GPS units, battery life is very short, it's intended to be kept plugged into the car.
I haven't used it much, but I expect it's about the same quality navigation as my old Magellan. Like all GPSes the maps won't be perfect.19 out of 21 found this review helpful.

I am currently using my gps on a RV trip from CA to New Orleans. It was a lifesaver traveling through Dallas TX, It started telling us 2 miles before each turn, what lane to be in, the name and route #, direction and City headed for. Could not have made it through without it as their signage was not the best. Setting up the address book was successful all but once. The female voice is soothing. The improvements in gps units the last 7 years is amazing. We are extremely happy with our purchase.30 out of 31 found this review helpful.

Now, this has turned out to be a very good GPS. It's very full featured and the touchscreen works more like a smartphone touchscreen, with the ability to slide the map over with finger swipes, etc., rather than a GPS touchscreen. That said, this GPS is VERY large. The dimensions are in the description of the item, but you have no idea how large this thing is until you unbox it and it's in your hand. Good thing we're using this in an SUV, because in my little compact car it would take up 1/3 of the windshield.11 out of 23 found this review helpful.

Poor Battery Life3

Sometimes the turn list would pop-up for no apparent reason during navigation.
Not good when you want to see where you're going!
When fully charged the battery lasts about 40mins.
Not great for longer trips. Unit would also complain at times to slide the switch to the ON position to keep the unit on when it was already ON!?
Some people are saying the latest software update from Magellan may be a bit buggy.
In the end I returned the unit due to the flaws I found.
One great thing about this unit is that the POI feature is so in-depth that you don't have to know the addresses for most public places you may want to visit.19 out of 30 found this review helpful.

This Gps is excellent. The ease of use is fantastic. Very user friendly. Easy to enter information for your destination. Proper lane choice is very visible. Great speaker volume with clarity of street names. Fantastic screen. Comes with computer connection for upgrades which other GPS does not. Any AC Adapter should work for power for upgrades. Love the onscreen feature of easy find for Food, Lodging and Gas.
Drawback is the windshield mounting. It could be better. But it does work.22 out of 26 found this review helpful.

It came down to the screen size, hard to find the perfect place but I have a SUV so I found the spot that is within reach. Is very easy to use, I am the kind of person that I read the manual last. I wish had live traffic updates and other things that I havent seen in any other unit. It would be nice if it comes with warning speeds, traffic lights or stop sign for those occacion when you are not familiar with the road. for the size the unit vibrates a bit in rough roads. I am happy with the unit for the money I paid.10 out of 15 found this review helpful.
