Synopsis

Longing to discover the identity of her true father before she exchanges her wedding vows, the daughter of a once-rebellious single mother secretly invites a trio of paternal candidates to her upcoming wedding in this feature adaptation of the beloved stage musical. Independent-minded single mother Donna (Meryl Streep) has always done her best to raise her spirited daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), while simultaneously running a successful hotel on a small Greek island, but now the time has come for this hardworking mom to finally let go. In just a few days, Sophie will be married, and Donna will stand by bittersweetly as her little girl takes flight. Of course, Donna's lifelong friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) will both be present at the wedding, but unbeknownst to the mother, Sophie has furtively invited three very special guests of her own. When Sophie walks down the aisle on that fateful day, she wants her father to hand her off. The only problem is that Donna has never revealed the true identity of Sophie's father, leaving the resourceful future bride to narrow the list down to three potential candidates. Now, as three key figures from Donna's past return to the picturesque Mediterranean shores they all walked 20 years prior, one beautiful bride will discover the secret of her past while one lonely mother finds out that it's never too late for a little romance. Phyllida Lloyd, director of both the original London sensation as well as the hit Broadway incarnation, makes her feature directorial debut with this big-screen version of the beloved musical featuring 22 classic ABBA hits. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgĺrd, and Dominic Cooper co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Travesty! And not in the lovable way!!!

Posted by: from Lockport, NY on 09/08/2009This movie wasn’t terrible, but it was still a major disappointment. I am a HUGE Abba fan and I can honestly say that this movie is an injustice to their music. Casting was completely WRONG When I heard that Meryl Streep was in this, I immediately thought “Huh… I didn’t know Meryl Streep could sing.” And guess what? SHE CAN’T! And Pierce Bronson’s voice was so grating! But at least he’s semi-pretty. So I can forgive him. But there was one thing that really bothered me. Donna was in her FORTIES when she gave birth to Sophie! Why was she disowned? Shouldn’t her mother be glad that’s her daughter finally gave her a grandchild? She probably had given up hope! And the dot, dot, dot bit was cute. But less cute when you realize it’s a forty year old woman writing that! And her lovers were in their twenties! But of course, they never bring that up, despite how ridiculous it looks in the film. I mean, you can REALLY tell Meryl Streep’s age. Who was the makeup artist for this film? I’ve read reviews that this movie takes place in the 1980’s. If that’s so, then you;ll have to ignore the modern clothes, modern language, and the popularity of the internet! Someone messed up. And the character of Donna was so obnoxious. Even more so, running around in those baggy overalls. What ugly costumes! Meryl Streep seriously needs to think about aging with dignity. It seemed like she was mimicking a 3 year old child in this. She looked even more ridiculous b/c she was acting beside Christine Baranksi, the epitome of talent, beauty, & sophistication. In fact, the only mature actress who could get away with Donna’s silliness would be Diane Keaton. She’s talented and lovable. Streep is not. Then randomly at the end, Colin Firth likes men? Okay, so he did say that he hasn’t love another woman since Donna and he has dogs instead of children – but I wouldn’t call those hints. He usually does a better job at choosing roles, so it’s shocking that this movie was so bad. I’m an Abba fan, and I still disliked this film. But the movie does redeem itself at the end, when Colin Firth dancing in Abba attire. If I had to recommend this movie, it would only be for that scene alone. Amanda Seyfried gave a great performance. Her fiancé was a little off. But Christine Baranski definitely stole the show! She has never looked so good! The most talented actors come from Buffalo, NY! She can brighten up the cruddiest movies! Her character was a good one to play. I love, love, love musicals, but this was disappointing. The actors couldn’t sing, nor dance. I can’t believe this was theatrical. It really seemed like a made for TV movie. Even the extras were just “blah.” I can sing along without any help. However, this is the type of movie my grandmother would enjoy. And if you’re mad at your boyfriend, make him sit through this. HA! That will fix him!

Spectacular Musical!

Posted by: from Phoenix, AZ on 07/02/2009This movie was great! Meryl Streep was spectacular, as always, and so was Amanda Seyfried. Very impressive. Some actors lacked in singing talent though, but oh well I guess. Overall a very pleasant movie.

Good Movie

Posted by: from on 06/10/2009I went into this movie really wanting to like it but when I saw it I was a little bored. The singing by some of the cast members could have been a little better, and also the acting. Meryl Streep is a great actress and she was phenominal in this movie. Some of the parts were a little slow. I say people should see it because the music is great

Meryl Streep

Posted by: from on 05/21/2009Anyone will like this movie it's not just a chick flick. Meryl Streep amazed me with her preformance in this film. I think it's her best one yet! Everyone says she can't sing or dance well after watching this movie she can! The songs aren't annoying like most musicals are. They tell a story and the singers are playing out the lyrics as they go. It's a very entertainging movie. Meryl Streep should be proud of herself.

A Little (Fun) Vacation
4
Posted by: from Redlands, CA on 01/10/2009This film is nothing more than sheer fun and excitement! Reviewers try to tear it apart and can't get past the simple fun it consists of; I think one critic put it best by writing, "it's a vacation." That's exactly what this movie is about; just a little less than a two-hour escape from reality. The film is chalk-full of ABBA songs and if you don't like their music, then do not watch this movie!

Good - not as good as play

Posted by: from on 12/16/2008I liked the movie. However, I loved the play more. There were some songs that weren't in the movie that was in the play. I saw the play about 6 times. Three times in London, twice in NY and once in Washington.
