X-Men: Night of the Sentinels, Part One
Originally telecast October 10, 1992, Part One of "Night of the Sentinels" was the inaugural episode of the Fox Network cartoon series X-Men. The story is set in motion when Jubilation Lee, a Chinese-American teenaged mutant, is rescued by the X-Men from a shopping-mall attack instigated by the Sentinels, a pack of mutant-catching robots. Ostensibly, the Sentinels were designed by the Mutant Registration Program to protect Jubilation and her kind from persecution; in truth, the huge robots are the handiwork of renegades Gyrich and Trask, who hope to wipe all mutants off the face of the earth! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

X-Men: Night of the Sentinels, Part Two
Now a member of the X-Men, Jubilation Lee --- or Jubilee, as she calls herself -- intends to use her telekinetic ability to make things explode as a means of combatting the mutant-killing Sentinels. Alas, things don't go as planned: After breaking into the Mutant Registration Office, Beast is arrested and Morph is appearently killed. As for Jubilee, she is captured by the Sentinels' evil creators Gyrich and Trask, in hopes of luring the other X-Men into their trap. This episode was the second half of the X-Men series opener. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Enter Magneto
Magneto, the awesomely powerful mutant "master of magnetism," tries to break Beast out of prison, where the latter is doing time for invading the offices of the Mutant Registration Program. Only Xavier realizes that Magneto is not a friend, but an enemy, planning an all-out war against the humans. For Magneto was once Xavier's friend Dr. Magnus, who has rejected all efforts to coexist with humanity and instead desires to rule the world. "Enter Magneto" was the third episode of X-Men's first season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Whatever It Takes
"Whatever It Takes" is the policy of the Shadow King as he endeavors to force Storm to return to Africa, there to take her rightful place as Princess Orono. To expedite this, Shadow King takes over the mind and body of Storm's surrogate son Mjnari. Meanwhile, the schizophrenic (but no longer villainous) Morph is invited to rejoin the X-Men by his former enemy Wolverine. Boasting excellent background artwork representing Mt. Kilimanjaro, "Whatever It Takes" was the third episode of X-Men's second season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Come the Apocalypse
In this followup to the first-season X-Men episode "The Cure," the disgruntled mutants return from Muir Island, angered that the "cure" for their affliction was a hoax. Even more angry is the immortal mutant Apocalypse, who intends to take out his disappointment on the rest of the world. Unleashing his dreaded Four Horsemen --- Famine, Pestilence, War and Death --- Apocalypse intends to wipe out all mankind. Thus, the X-Men have to swallow their own indignation and save the world once more. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

X-Men: Till Death Do Us Part, Pt. 2
Still under the influence of Dr. Sinister, the mixed-up Morph tries to destroy his fellow X-Men by turning them against one another. To prevent this, Professor X (Xavier) and Magneto (Dr. Magnus) forget their past differences and combine their individual strengths. Unfortunately, Sinister proves to be a tad smarter than both men, who unwittingly fall into a deadly --- and possibly inescapable --- trap. Part Two of "'Til Death Do Us Part" was Episode #2 of X-Men's second season on the Fox Network. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: The Unstoppable Juggernaut
Colossus, the Russian member of the X-Men, is the prime suspect when Xavier's mansion is destroyed. Further evidence indicates that Colossus was also responsible for a series of robberies. The actual miscreant is a huge and apparently invulnearable renegade mutant named Juggernaut. But it gets worse: Juggernaut is out to get revenge against his own half-brother--Xavier! "The Unstoppalbe Juggernaut" was the eighth episode of X-Men's first season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Slave Island
Seeking a safe harbor for the "outcast" X-Men, Xavier is led to believe that the island nation of Genosha is friendly toward mutants. But upon their arrival on Genosha, Storm, Gambit and Jubilee are immediately captured. It is then that the horrible truth is revealed: The island is a slave-labor camp, where mutants are forced to expedite their own doom by building the dreaded Sentinel robots. "Slave Island" was episode #7 of X-Men's first season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Deadly Reunions
The 1st-season X-Men episode "Deadly Reunions" could also have been titled "Former Friends Fall Out." Still at odds over the fate of Humanity, Xavier and Magneto are locked in Mortal combat. Likewise, Wolverine squares off against his old nemesis Sabretooth. Making things difficult is the fact that the rest of the X-Men are rather partial to Sabretooth, who (thus far) has done them no harm. The outcome of this episode will determine the storyline of the next installment, "Captive Hearts." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Captive Hearts
The Morlocks, a fearsome band of underground-dwelling mutants, have captured X-Men Cyclops and Jean Grey. There is nothing for the other X-Men to do but plan a rescue, no matter what the cost. Throughout the mission, however, Wolverine --- still reeling from his previous confrontation with Sabretooth -- is torn between his envy toward Cyclops and his growing fondness for Jean. (Trivia note: The Morlocks were also the subterranean villains in the 1960 sci-fi feature The Time Machine). "Captive Hearts" was originally telecast as episode 5 of X-Men's first season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: Cold Vengeance
Even though he has rescued Cyclops from the Morlocks, Wolverine is still extremely jealous of his fellow X-Man. In hopes of getting his head together, Wolverine heads for the solace of his native Canadian wilderness. Here he joins a peaceful band of Eskimos on Baffin Island, and at long last is at peace with himself. But things take a violent turn when his old enemy -- and fellow "lab mistake" -- Sabretooth catches up with him. "Cold Vengeance" was the sixth episode of X-Men's inaugural TV season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: The Cure
Potentially good news has emanated from the Muir Island Mutant Research Center. One of the scientists claims that he has discovered a cure for mutants. Naturally, the X-Men make a beeline to the island, hoping to become normal human beings. Alas, news of the cure is not only premature, but downright misleading: The inventor intends to use his "wonder" elixir to enslave all mutants and trasnform them into his own evil slaves. "The Cure" first aired as the ninth episode of X-Men's 1992-93 season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    X-Men: The Final Decision
In the first episode of X-Men, we learned that renegade inventors Gyrich and Trask had instigated Project Wideawake as a means of killing all mutants. After a lengthy absence, the two villains return, whereupon they again begin manufacturing the dread mutant-destroying Sentinel Robots. Unable to stem the flow of Sentinels, the X-Men must located and destroy Gyrich and Trask's Master Mold. Help comes in the unexpected shape of the unpredictable Dr. Magneto. "The Final Decision" was, appropriately, the final episode of X-Men's first season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

X-Men: Days of Future Past, Part 2
In the second half of the two-part adventure "Days of the Future", futuristic mutant Bishop is still struggling to recall the identity of the X-Men who will assassinate Bishop. His memory finally restored, Bishop fingers the culprit: Gambit, the (literally) explosive Cajun. This leaves the other X-Men on the horns of a dilemma: They can't let Bishop destroy their friend, yet they also cannot allow Gambit to become a murderer. Making things worse is the sudden reappearance of the renegade Dr. Magnus, aka Magneto. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

X-Men: Days of Future Past, Part 1
In the second two-part adventure of X-Men's first season, a futuristic mutant time traveller, Bishop, arrives in the past --- which is the X-Men's present. Knowing full well that another mutant intends to murder Senator Kelly, Bishop intends to thwart the assassination. Problem One: Bishop has lost his memory. Problem Two: The killer mutant he seeks is one of the X-Men --- who likewise has no idea that he (or she) is a potential murderer! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

X-Men: Till Death Do Us Part, Pt. 1
Entering its second season as the highest-rated animated series on the Fox Network's Saturday-morning schedule, X-Men got off to a rousing start with the two-parter "'Til Death Do Us Part." Despite the grumblings of the envious Wolverine, X-Men Cyclops and Jean go ahead with their wedding plans. But disaster looms in the shape of Mr. Sinister, who sets in motion a scheme to kill off the X-Men, one by one. Sinister's assistant in this scheme is none other than the schizophrenic Morph, who is still unhinged from his near-death experience in Season One. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The greatest X-Men series on DVD at last!

Posted by: from Nashville, TN on 07/09/2010It is great to see the best televised version of the X-Men on DVD at last. Though it lacks any extras, the episodes speak for themselves. This series, especially the first two seasons, was solid gold. It brings back a lot of memories and knocks other versions of the X-Men story out of the water. Any Marvel, X-Men, or early-90s cartoon fan should complete their collection with this volume.

Posted by: from MA on 05/05/2009Buyer beware- this is a CHEAP transfer. Most episodes have missing dialog and missing music. It is not worth the money unless you're willing to accept D-grade material that is incomplete.

    FINALLY

Posted by: from jacksonville, fl on 04/13/2009For any fan of the X-men or just comic books in general, this is widely regarded as the absolute best cartoon ever made. The creators made sure to keep as close to the source material as possibe by rewarding fans with faithful adaptations of some of our favortie story lines such as "Days of Future Past" and "The Dark Phoenix Saga." The writing, voicework (the guy who voiced Wolverine still voices him for other X-men shows and video games), art direction were all top notch and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this. But, like so many other great shows and movies it has taken far too long for this excellent series to see the light of day as a DVD release. Fans have been clamoring for years to see this and it's finally happening. About time!
