    M*A*S*H: A Smattering of Intelligence
Edward Winter makes his first series appearance as Col. Sam Flagg, the CIA's most paranoid operative (if such a thing is possible). On this occasion, Flagg isn't the only spy snooping around the 4077th; another agent is likewise trying to ferret out subversives. As Hawkeye (Alan Alda) sends the two agents on a wild goose chase with dumb-dumb Frank Burns (Larry Linville) as the goose, Trapper (Wayne Rogers) has a not uneventful reunion with an old friend. "A Smattering of Intelligence" originally aired March 2, 1974, as the closing episode of M*A*S*H's second season. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Crisis
When the supply lines are cut, camp clerk Radar (Gary Burghoff) must resort to extreme, even Draconian conservation measures. Staff members are doubled up in tents to save on fuel, and before long every spare stick of furniture is being burned for heat. At the precise moment that the last of the toilet paper runs out, the wounded start pouring in. Jeff Maxwell makes his first series appearance as camp cook Igor. "Crisis" was first telecast on February 9, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: George
Richard Ely guest stars as Pvt. George Weston, a courageous, highly decorated soldier who happens to be a homosexual. Upon learning of Weston's persuasion, an apoplectic Frank Burns (Larry Linville) tries to have the hapless private dishonorably discharged. As usual, however, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) comes to the rescue by making Frank look twice as foolish as usual -- no mean feat, admittedly. Still another instance of the TV M*A*S*H outdistancing the movie version in terms of compassion and sensitivity, "George" originally aired on February 16, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: For the Good of the Outfit
An outraged Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) try to alert the authorities that a peaceful local village was accidentally bombed by American artillery. They turn their evidence over to Major Stoner (Frank Aletter), who promptly destroys it lest the army be cast in an unfavorable light. But the truth, crushed to earth, rises again -- and ironically, it is the xenophobic Frank Burns (Larry Linville) who ends up spilling the beans. "For the Good of the Outfit" initially aired on October 6, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde
On the verge of insanity after three solid days in the O.R., the sleep-deprived Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is unable to stop operating even when he's ordered to. Continuing to spin out of control, Hawkeye pens a provocative letter to President Truman, then attempts to negotiate a cease-fire by providing the enemy with the officer's latrine. It is up to Trapper (Wayne Rogers) to bring Hawkeye's delirium to a safe conclusion. "Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde" first aired on October 13, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: As You Were
During a brief lull in shooting, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) while away the time by ordering gorilla costumes. Elsewhere, Frank tries to sneak in his long-delayed hernia operation, only to be boarded up in a crate for his trouble; and the latest sex-orientation lecture delivered by Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) proves almost as funny as Henry's new tan. But it isn't funny at all when the wounded start pouring in again -- and the camp's generator is knocked out by friendly fire. "As You Were" first aired on February 2, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Kim
The 4077th falls in love with a five-year-old Korean boy (Edgar Raymond Miller), whose life Hawkeye (Alan Alda) saved in the O.R. Though it seems that the child is an orphan -- indeed, Trapper (Wayne Rogers) is prepared to adopt the kid -- Radar (Gary Burghoff) conducts a frenzied search for the little one's family. Comedy and pathos suddenly shifts into full suspense mode when the curious youngster wanders into the middle of a minefield. "Kim" originally aired on October 20, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Carry On Hawkeye
When practically everyone in the 4077th is laid low by the Asian flu, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Margaret (Loretta Swit) are forced to tend the incoming wounded all by themselves. Ultimately, Margaret also falls victim to the mischievous microbes, leaving Hawkeye to soldier on alone. To be sure, he is rewarded for his efforts, but not quite in the way he expected. "Carry on Hawkeye" was first telecast on November 24, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: 5 O'Clock Charlie
Every Friday at five o'clock on the dot, a inept North Korean pilot tries to bomb the 4077th's ammunition dump. Fortunately, "5 O'Clock Charlie" apparently can't hit the broad side of a barn, but that doesn't stop gung-ho Frank Burns (Larry Linville) from trying to requistion an anti-aircraft gun. Realizing that the combination of Frank and a weapon is potentially more dangerous than any enemy pilot, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) cook up a scheme to remove the threat -- by removing "Charlie"'s primary target. "5 O'Clock Charlie" first aired on September 22, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: The Trial of Henry Blake
Frank (Larry Linville) and Margaret (Loretta Swit) joins forces to get Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) removed from duty on a charge of incompetence. Covering all bases, the connivers place Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) under arrest so they can't come to Henry's rescue. The solution to the problem rests with Nurse Meg Cratty, played by former Andy Griffith Show regular Hope Summers. Written by M*A*S*H co-star McLean Stevenson, "The Trial of Henry Blake" was originally telecast on November 3, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Chosen People
A South Korean family refuses to leave the 4077th's compound, insisting that it is their property and that the Army should vacate instead. Meanwhile, a young Korean unwed mother insists that poor Radar (Gary Burghoff) is the baby's daddy. If Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) thought that the enemy North Koreans were a headache, they were nothing compared to these friendly locals. "The Chosen People" first aired on January 26, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Radar's Report
Writing up his weekly report, Cpl. Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff) recounts a "typical" series of events at the 4077th. Highlights of the report include a beserk, scalpel-wielding POW (Derick Shimatsu); the latest scheme concocted by Klinger (Jamie Farr) to get out of the army on a Section Eight; and Hawkeye's dalliance with a married nurse (Joan Van Ark). Allan Arbus makes his first series appearance as funky army psychiatrist Dr. Freedman, here given the first name of Milton, but later identified as Sidney. "Radar's Report" originally aired on September 29, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Operation Noselift
Perennially AWOL Private Baker (Todd Susman) agrees to stay put if Hawkeye (Alan Arkin) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) can arrange for the sensitive Baker to get a nose job. Hawkeye secures the services of plastic surgeon Maj. Robbins (Stuart Margolin), who agrees to perform the unauthorized operation on one condition -- that he can have access to a sexy nurse whom he describes as "The Barracuda." And there's still one more obstacle to overcome; the good guys will have to keep the rule-bound Frank (Larry Linville) and Margaret (Loretta Swit) in the dark during surgery. "Operation Noselift" originally aired on January 19, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Mail Call
The weekly mail call affords Hawkeye (Alan Alda) the opportunity to concoct an elaborate practical joke involving the greedy, gullible Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and a nonexistant blue-chip stock called Pioneer Aviation. But the latest mail has an entirely different effect on Trapper (Wayne Rogers), who becomes so depressed that he threatens to desert the camp. This episode marked the directorial debut of series regular Alan Alda. "Mail Call" first aired on February 23, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: L.I.P. (Local Indigenous Personnel)
Hawkeye (Alan Alda) takes up the cause of young Cpl. Walker (Jerry Zaks), who wants to marry his Korean sweetheart and ship the girl and their baby back to America. Unfortunately, Hawkeye runs up against the intractable Lt. Willis (Burt Young), who refuses to bend the rules under any circumstances and is ultimately foiled by his own human weaknesses. While on another romantic front, Hawkeye discovers anew that beauty is only skin deep. "L.I.P. (Local Indigenous Personnel)" was first broadcast on October 27, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Sniper
The 4077th is under siege from a young enemy sniper, who is convinced that General MacArthur is hiding somewhere in the camp. To avoid getting shot full of holes, Radar (Gary Burghoff) and Henry (McLean Stevenson) spend most of the episode trapped in the shower. In the end, it is Hawkeye who proves that the scalpel is mightier than the sword -- or something like that. "The Sniper" originally aired on November 17, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: The Incubator
A hung-over Hawkeye (Alan Alda) joins forces with an equally groggy Trapper (Wayne Rogers) to requisition a new incubator for the 4077th. Unfortunately, not even a nearby Major with three incubators at his disposal is of any help to the heroes. Meanwhile, Henry (McLean Stevenson) basks with pride over his new outdoor barbecue, but his elation evaporates when Radar (Gary Burghoff) comes up with a solution to the incubator problem. This episode of M*A*S*H originally aired on December 1, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Officers Only
As a reward for saving the life of the son of Gen. Maynard M. Mitchell (Robert F. Simon), Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) get three days' R & R in Tokyo, while the 4077th gets a new Officer's Club. Alas, Frank (Larry Linville) spoils the fun by sticking to the letter of the law and refusing to allow any non-officers to enjoy the club's facilities. To restore sanity and democracy to the camp, Hawkeye relies once more upon Gen. Mitchell, who isn't even aware that he's being used. Capped by a running gag in which Klinger tries to get a maternity discharge, "Officers Only" was first telecast on December 22, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: Hot Lips and Empty Arms
Fed up with practically everything -- the lack of decorum at the 4077th, the irreverence of Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers), and especially her dead-end romance with Frank Burns (Larry Linville) -- Maj. Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) demands a transfer out of the unit. This momentous occasion demands a farewell party, during which Margaret gets good and sloshed. An unexpected crisis not only sobers up the heroine, but changes her mind as well. The first of several episodes written by actress Mary Kay Place and future sitcom producer Linda Bloodworth, "Hot Lips and Empty Arms" originally aired on December 15, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Henry In Love
Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) returns from a sojourn in Tokyo even giddier than usual. And no wonder; Henry has fallen in love with nurse Nancy Sue Parker (Katherine Baumann), a woman half the age of his wife. Even allowing for the relaxed morals overseas, the other officers are convinced that Henry is making a mistake, especially when sweet Nancy makes a play for Hawkeye. It is up to Cpl. Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff) to bring Henry back to his senses with a strategically placed phone call. "Henry in Love" was initially broadcast on January 5, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Dear Dad.. Three
In his latest letter to his father, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) relates a number of memorable events from the recent past of the 4077th. For example, there was the time that the doctors removed a grenade from the body of a soldier; then there was that bigoted GI who refused a blood transfusion from anyone of another race -- a refusal that became a moot point after Hawkeye and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) performed a little cosmetic surgery; and then there was yet another hilariously pointless staff meeting. The letter closes with a poignant account of the home movies received in the mail by Col. Blake (McLean Stevenson). "Dear Dad...Three" first aired on November 10, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Deal Me Out
Laid-back army psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) pays a return visit to the genial insanity of the 4077th. Joining the camp's never-ending poker game, Freedman never quite gets on a winning streak thanks to constant interruptions, not least of which is the ceaseless flow of incoming wounded. Elsewhere, Radar (Gary Burghoff) literally bumps into a Korean con artist (Jerry Fujikawa), who makes his living as an accident victim, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and Trapper (Wayne Rogers) perform another of their unauthorized operations, and a distraught soldier (John Ritter) goes gunning for Frank (Larry Linville). Edward Winter, later seen as paranoid CIA officer Col. Flagg, is here cast as Captain Halloran. "Deal Me Out" first aired on December 8, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

M*A*S*H: For Want of a Boot
All Hawkeye (Alan Alda) wants is a new pair of boots, but oh, what a labyrinthine route he must take to achieve his goal. Supply Sergeant Zale (Johnny Haymer, in his first series appearance) might be able to locate some boots, but only if he can wangle an appointment with overworked army dentist Futterman (Michael Lerner). Futterman agrees to see Zale, but only if he is given a three-day pass to Tokyo. Henry (McLean Stevenson) will okay the pass, but only if Hawkeye can mollify the contentious Margaret (Loretta Swit). Margaret will shut up only if her sweetie, Frank (Larry Linville), gets a surprise birthday party...and so it goes, on and on, round and round. "For Want of a Boot" first aired on January 12, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    M*A*S*H: Divided We Stand
The men and women of the 4077th are acting more wacky than ever, but only so they can retain their sanity in the face of the Korean War. General Clayton (Herb Voland), worried that the MASH unit's zaniness may be getting out of hand, assigns a no-nonense psychiatrist, Capt. Hildebrandt (Anthony Holland), to determine if it would be better to split up the unit, "for the good of the service." But after a week or so with the likes of Hawkeye (Alan Alda), Trapper (Wayne Rogers), et. al., Hildebrandt begins to see things in a different -- and crazier -- light. "Divided We Stand" originally aired September 15, 1973, as the opening episode of M*A*S*H's second season. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
