If you have an unlimited data plan, and you don't like the greed factor when it comes to additional charges for services that should be standard in today's market, or you don't want to jail brake your phone this is a positive alternative. Sure it costs money, but it's a one time fee. Like everything however, there has to be proper balance. Usually when companies mean "unlimited data" they mean "we need to redefine unlimited to 3 GB per month." I'm not suggesting that you should use this for replacing your home internet connection. But it is a cheap alternative relatively speaking if you want to use it for a mobile hotspot from time to time. While NetZero and other companies have hotspots, that's fine if you live in a major city. They just don't yet have the coverage in my area outside of Washington DC. I welcome the competition actually because that gives customers more options and buying power compared to what we have now. And the major carriers like to do price fixing so that you have to pay $50 per month to have a hotspot. I cannot blame them really in one regard because if everyone did this then it would degrade network performance, and they have to make it at least as high as what you would pay for broadband anyway just to ensure other corporations can maintain their level of greed to pay their top executives $500k - $1 M+ per year. You know, because living off of $100,000 or less is asking too much. I got a little worried and almost returned this phone because I could not get the data connection to work. Plus the customer service in Charles County Maryland, and the surrounding Washington DC area is horrible. You see it in major cell phone carriers in my area too, as well at Best Buy in Waldorf, Maryland. In that store I've called them from within the store when they are not busy just to test my theory, and yep you guessed it... It rang, and rang, and rang, and rang and nobody picked up even though someone was standing at the customer service counter without a customer in sight. One other tip I learned is if I really want support I'll come in 5 minutes to closing time. It's amazing how at the last mile they actually put their customer service hat on to help you find something just to get you out the door. I cannot say completely that the store is completely bad all of the time. There are sales associates there who are extremely helpful, but they are few and far between. I guess though that since Circuit City (their direct competitor) tanked they don't have to worry about competition or focusing on customer service anymore. Your cell phone carrier will not help you with an unlocked phone you've purchased either. I went there, they wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Best Buy staff, even though they told me they wouldn't help me after asking for it (not a surprise there) one support rep. gave me an idea which set me in the right direction. He said that if you have an unlocked phone you have to program it to your carrier for your data connection to work. Yep, I said it, before you clam up and figure "that's too hard for me to do or figure out," I found a youtube video below that shows you how to configure it for one of the major carriers. Basically when you buy a phone from a major carrier it already comes with the settings hardcoded or configured somewhere in the settings section of your phone. These are referred to as "APN settings." It really makes sense when you think about it. So I have to give credit to the Best Buy staff even though they wouldn't help me do it.
