Posted by: Bcarlson from Chicago on 05/17/2013Use mainly for Netflix and worked great for the last few weeks. Recently having loss of Internet connection, seems to be caused by this unit. Turning it on shuts down the DSL connection, I don't know why and don't feel like waiting on hold for half a day with tech support to be told to 'unplug the power and reconnect' or 'follow the troubleshooting flow chart' in the back of the manual. Probably end up discontinuing Netflix and regretting the day I bought this door stop.

Poor competition to AppleTV
2
Posted by: JAngel from Illinois on 05/15/2013I have an AppleTV so that is what I am comparing this to. This device is MUCH slower when navigating menus. But for $50 that is to be expected I guess. The menus are not as well designed as the AppleTV but I can get past all of that if it actually worked. Netflix seemed to work OK but Hulu Plus froze about 50% of the time while transitioning to the commercials. I tried this over a 2 day period and got so frustrated with it that I had to return it. The box was hardwired to my netwrok that did not was not the cause. Tested Hulu on my AppleTV2 and it works flawlessly. All in all spend the extra money for the AppleTV, the experience is much better.

Don't Waste Your Money
1
Posted by: TooManyGadgets from USA on 05/15/2013I bought this from Best Buy as a gift for the holidays. It stopped working 4 months later in April. Nothing but a black screen would come up no matter what was tried. The person I gave it to had not registered it when received, so I tried to register it so I could get it repaired under warranty. However I couldn't even use/access chat or customer support because netgear keeps saying I have entered an invalid serial number even though I typed in correctly at least a half a dozen times. I couldn't even continue with the process of contacting somebody without entering the serial number that the website continually rejected.
Guess I'm stuck with an expensive paperweight + will still have to buy something else to replace it. How embarrassing to give a gift that lasts 4 short months and then can't even be serviced for repair because it's not possible to contact the company that made it!
It looked like this media player would be easier to set up, access and learn for a less tech-savvy person than some other devices and it was, but unfortunately that is of little use when it dies after such a short time. On top of that, can't even contact netgear to have it fixed since their stupid site rejects their own serial number which is required to start the support process!
Wasted my time and my money and most of all, feel horrible since it was a gift to begin with. I will be ordering a Roku or something else that actually works and just helping with the set-up over the phone. Wish I had read all of the other reviews before buying this piece of junk.
With the incredibly bad customer support experience on the manufacturer website, will also be avoiding all other netgear products from now on. . Do yourself a favor and spend a little more and buy something worth having from a company that will stand behind it's products.

SAVE YOUR MONEY

Posted by: Bjp5 from on 05/14/2013This thing is horrible. Pretty much every time I get on Netflix and pick something to watch it kicks me off and takes me all the way back to the main menu. It did that to me 6 times in a row. Seriously, pay the extra $50 for the Apple TV. I wish I had instead of spending $50 on this piece of trash.

Posted by: tigrisbutterfly from toledo ohio on 05/13/2013this item is so easy to use. Makes it nice to be able to stream movies and music on the tv instead of trying to watch on computer. it doesnt spend alot of time buffering like on my tablet which can be so frustrating. I would and do recommend this item to friends and family

Slingbox streaming is a no go
1
Posted by: SinisterSpatula from Las Vegas, NV on 05/10/2013I bought this specifically for the slingbox streaming app. The slingbox app sucks big time. Streaming video is low bitrate and buffers too much when set to higher bitrate. Takes 30 seconds to send a remote control key press and get a response back from the slingbox with no support for the faster "control mode" streaming. Too cumbersome to be feasibly used for second room viewing even on a local network in your own home even on a 100mbps LAN connection. Because of this it now sits unused in my closet. I prefer my roku over this device. Only good thing it has going for it is the YouTube app. Aside from that your better off with a roku.

Posted by: kgalaba from Greenback, TN on 05/10/2013I would definitely buy again. We had never been to Netflix before and it was easy to set up in our bedroom. Great blu ray too! Would buy again in a minute.

Great addition to the entertainment devices

Posted by: StreamingBox from Fort Collins, CO on 05/10/2013Overall, this was a great purchase for me because I wasn't getting my money's worth out of the Netflix fees I've been paying for a long time. Now I can search online for fun movies that are streamable and then go right into the movies whenever I want. It also has all of the other features and sites you can visit which makes it super versatile. It was definitely worth the cost. Very convenient and reliable entertainment!

Good for the price but SLOW
3
Posted by: swrives from traverse city, mi on 05/07/2013It's only $50 and you get Netflix, YouTube(kind of), Hulu, etc, etc. But turning it on and getting it online is a process that you should start before you pop your popcorn.
Everything takes forever, from the startup to the buffering. There is usually a huge lag between pushing a button on the remote and getting a response onscreen.
Oh, and sometimes it freezes up too.
If you don't have a lot of money, this will get the job done. If you can afford something better, it's probably worth it.
