Because there's no switch, I've tried loading the software then the hardware and vice versa. Sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't. I've tried cleaning and calibrating regularly, however it most recently doesn't load the paper. I am beyond frustrated and am ready to throw it away. I bought this for work as I travel world wide and need instant scanning. But it's too unreliable and help from NEAT is just as bad.
I've had the portable scanner for just about a year - worst expense of $200 I've spent for equipment! It's not like I use it every day, but I do need it to work when I need it to work! Very, very disappointed...

Don't buy if you have custom software

Posted by: Scrapper8o from Pontiac, MI on 04/23/2013I purchased this for a simple scanner to scan receipts into our own database. All it had to do was scan to PDF. It has a hardware button for that, so I thought perfect. Unfortunately it requires the use of their bloated software package including a Microsoft SQL database. Upon reading their forums, it seems their old software package had the features I was looking for, but when they "upgraded" to 5.0 they removed the "Quickscan" functionality. 11 months ago it was confirmed as an item for future release, but nothing has been posted by their company since then on that thread. This product will be going back to the store.

Great for the money

Posted by: PanamaJim from Riverview, Florida on 04/02/2013I use my Neat mostly to scan receipts, so this is not a good review of it's color features. I love it's portability since I travel a lot. I like the product overall, but there are two things that I need to warn you about.
One - the filing system that they brag about in the commercials uses a file type that can only be read by their software. The software will do all that they say that it will, but you can't share the files. I prefer to scan to pdf and organize manually. You may only scan one page at a time with this model, however the software provides an option that will allow you to create multipage documents.
Two - sometimes papers will not feed properly. This is easily solved by creating a level feed into the device. I use an unopened pack of card stock printer paper.
Overall, this is a good buy.

Scans, but don't try to use it with Quicken

Posted by: dmillertiac from Framingham, MA on 03/28/2013Bought this after much debate due to such mixed reviews. Main goal of scanning a large stack of receipts for importing into Quicken. Scanned 8 receipts. All but 2 captured information from receipt reliably (those 2 did not capture the store name due to "logo" on receipt). All 8 were exported for Quicken import (using the defined guidelines) in QIF format. Import into Quicken only recognized 4 of the 8 receipts (only 4 new entries created) and of the 4 only 2 were accurate compared to the data in Neat software. I'm not sure if the failure is in Neat export of QIF, or Quicken import, but either way, a 25% success rate is not acceptable for the job I bought it to do.

I've use it frequently and haven't had any issues with it. I don't use it for travel but for home use, I like that's it's small and doesn't take up too much space. Installation was super easy for me.

Posted by: analog2pixels from West Virgina on 03/01/2012It scans your receipts. Period. It will also sort, show if its a credit card, shows date, and all relevant information from your receipt. Well worth the money.
Scanner has a difficult time grabbing the paper, so must wiggle and push lightly to get going. Other than that, a very decent piece of product.
