Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - PlayStation 3 (40 out of 40)
Gotta catch em all...

Posted by: from on 05/10/2013I have been trying to capture a Toko for 2 days...I was convinced I was playing a Pokemon game rather than Ni No Kuni. The familiars in this game are a lot like pokemons, because you capture them, train them, and they also evolve! If you love Studio Ghibli animation, music by Joe Hisaishi, and RPG games, then you will fall in love with this game. However, I did find it disappointing that there were far less animated scenes and voice acting towards the middle - end of the game. The controls are a bit awkward during battle. You run around using the thumb stick, and you push left or right to scroll through the list of actions to take. Spells, provisions (items), attack, defend... It's just...weird. Also, when the enemy target locks on you, you have to scroll through the list of actions to find "defend" (which not all familiars can do, btw...). You also have to wait a few seconds before you can perform the action again. So in the meantime...run around and avoid getting hit. If you accidentally "defend" then cancel the action, and immediately afterward the enemy decides to conveniently unleash its most powerful attack, you're out of luck. Brace for impact. Ni No Kuni keeps the player busy with a hoard of side quests in the form of errands and bounty hunts. It's a good idea to do these because you collect merit stamps in the process, which can be traded in for an increase in experience earned in battles, increase chances of taming a familiar, the ability to jump...and so on and so on. Mini games in the casino become available midway through the game. Taming and acquiring familiars is not necessary, but it's fun. The cutest and probably most elusive is the Toko (and Tokotoko). Tokos looks like a distant cousin to Totoro. I love how it throws a temper tantrum when you take to long to feed it a treat. Not the most useful familiar, but it's evasion stats are insanely high. Good luck catching one. They are fast. Don't fret if it takes awhile, because hunting Tokos will help you level up extremely fast. The experience gained from fighting a Toko is in the thousands!!

Fun game and kid friendly

Posted by: from on 05/10/2013If you like games like Blue Dragon you'll like this game. The animation really makes you feel like you are controlling a hand drawn cartoon film.

Awesome JRPG
5
Posted by: from lexington, ky on 05/04/2013Bought this game for a friend's birthday after months of excitement about it. It's instantly addicting and feels like a true JRPG. As with most JRPGs, there is a lot of combat and level grinding, which can start to feel a bit repetitive, especially as the health rewards and experience don't necessarily increase as the challenge increases. But the story is great, the side quests are engaging and rewarding, and the characters are fairly fleshed out. The graphics are classic Studio Ghibli, and the collaboration with Level 5 is outstanding. It has two difficulty settings, so it is great for either a beginner or a more experience player! This easily made it into my top 5 games in terms of how much I love it already, and I definitely recommend it to everyone!

Bringing the JRPG to a new audiance
5
Posted by: from on 04/26/2013Ni no Kuni is by far the best JRPG to come out in a while. With a simple and child friendly story, and fast paced and easy gameplay to give a good start to someone new to the JRPG or younger audience, it has some challenging points in it to give the hardcore fans some fun but they lie in the subquests and only a few at that. The visuals add a whole lot to the game with design and all over feel of the game resting in the skilled hands of Studio Ghibli. Sounds while not bad to any extent still are the usual fair. The voices (provided both in English and Japanese flavors) are well done. Which is unusual because in general terms English dubbing to a foreign anything usually sounds like a cheese grater against my ears but in this game they actually do a good job. I whole heartily enjoyed this game and can recommend it to anyone new to JRPGs or a hardcore fan looking for a game that can occupy their time for the next 40+ hours.

Great RPG for jaded gamers
5
Posted by: from Minneapolis, MN on 04/15/2013Over the past decade I grew incredibly jaded with JRPGs and moved away from the genre, but this game brought me right back. Part Dragon Warrior, part Pokemon with all of the Studio Ghibli flair. Amazing graphics, phenomenal soundtrack, and a wonderful game to play with kids. There is an overemphasis on fetch quests and backtracking but the pace of the main quest is perfect. Everyone with a PS3 should own this game.

This is a great game!

Posted by: from on 04/15/2013In short, this is an awesome game. I read many reviews online before going out and purchasing myself - and I was not disappointed. The story is fairly engaging, the combat is fun, and everything works well. I'll admit that it's a bit predictable... But I won't really knock it for that, since the vast majority of RPGs are.
