Posted by: JohninDFW from Dallas on 05/19/2013I was convinced my older 50mm 1.8D lens was up to the task, and the challenges of being used on a D800 body. It's a good lens, but the new 50mm 1.8G lens is better. I think its sharper, and the contrast is better, especially at 1.8 aperture. People claim the focus is not as fast but I believe it is comparable to screw type D lenses. This lens will work on any body, and that's going to be very important for those that own bodies such as the 3100, the 5100 series. The older D lens just wont work on the bodies that have less features. This 50mm 1.8G lens is more modern, and seems to work better with the current full frame Nikon cameras. I would recommend this lens as a starter lens for anyone purchasing a Nikon camera body, regardless if its a DX body or the FX type. By the way, I used to buy all my photo equipment from one of the retailers in New York. Several times in the past year I was not able to get the lens from that retailer-backordered! So far I have purchased a D800 body, the 50mm 1.8G lens, and the 85mm 1.8G lens from Best Buy. I order online and the product is almost always in my hands within a week. They have always given me great service and so far get the product to me in a timely manner.

Posted by: splinter50 from Fort Worth, Texas on 05/09/2013I could not have been more pleased with this lens. The quality difference between it and the "boxed" lens is incredible. Images are much sharper.

Great image quality at a small price

Posted by: Billsnature from PA on 05/06/2013You may need to play with the AF micro adjust to get this lens finely tuned in to get optimal performance, but once you do it is a stunner. Very sharp even fairly open, but stop it down to f5.6 to f8 for landscapes and it produces great images.

Posted by: cello73 from Nassau, NY on 05/06/2013I've been looking to buy this lens for a while and it was certainly worth the wait for it to come back in stock. I've gotten incredible pictures from it and it's actually my lens of choice now. Extra plus is that it's super compact and light.

Excellent 50mm

Posted by: JediNewbish from LA on 05/04/2013I have the older D lens, and I often wonder how I got by without it. The appeal is mainly the lens speed. The majority of shots I've taken with the lens are wide open or close to wide open. It's an excellent lens for portraiture: f1.8 means you'll be able to get shallower DOF that will make your subjects pop... it definitely beats any zoom that's in the market in this regard.
Performance may peak at 5.6 or 8 (which is usually the sweet spot for most lenses), but the whole point of picking up a lens such as this is for that large aperture.
I can't believe they're more than doubling the price just for changing a letter, especially when all they're doing is removing an aperture ring... that's all G lenses are: D lenses without the ring.
