Posted by: Trimalango from Miami, FL on 10/17/2010One caveat before I begin: I am an amateur photographer! I will not describe to you this item with the flair of a professional in the field.
I can only say that what I saw when I attached the lens to my D300s was mind-blowing!
I took indoor volleyball pictures with it, and the 1.4f lens was enough to not to use a flash and take GREAT pictures with poor lighting!
One thing though, it is an 85 mm so this are very very close when you look through the viewfinder!

Legendary Lens

Posted by: Jim68 from Modesto, CA on 11/03/2009I completed a lot of research on this lens before purchasing. A consistent theme I found again and again is that this is an exceptional lens. The 1.4 fast aperture gives you the ability to have a razor thin depth of focus. So far I've tried a few attempts at portraits and the results have ben great. If you are serious about the control you want over creative portraits, then this is a great lens for you.

Posted by: benkrebs from maine on 04/16/2009I've been using this lens for weddings and some fashion and location shoots, and ive never used a better lens on a slr...
Its sharp wide open, even sharper when stopped down a bit, great color reproduction, and some of the smoothest bokeh ive seen. The 9 bladed rounded apeture means smooth circular out of focus elements up to around f5.6.
Stellar portrait lens, even on dx, it makes for great headshots, and wider shots if you have the room to step back.
My only complaints are those inherant with most AF-d lenses, the AF is slow and not terrible accurate. Mind you, AF is faster than most cheaper lenses, but for it's class it could be better; if an AF-s version ever comes out, then im pretty sure it will be one of Nikons best.

Doesn't get much better than this, if any!

Posted by: Peachy from Columbia, SC on 01/16/2008The 85mm 1.8 is a great lens for those on a budget, offering a lot of the performance of the 1.4. However, if you have the funds, there is simply no beating the 85mm 1.4. It is always a joy to use, will provide you with some of your favorite images, and I wouldn't sell mine for the world. (Maybe the world and moon?)
The build quality will ensure you own this lens as long as you enjoy photography. For portraits, this lens is a great focal length whether on a Film 35mm, a full frame DSLR, or even a DX DSLR.
One thing always mentioned about this lens is the bokeh. (The out of focus elements in an image when using wide apertures.) What is said on the Internet is true. Bokeh doesn't get much better than with this lens. (Some expensive Canon lenses compare, and the 70-200mm 2.8 VR Nikon comes close.)
Flare is well controlled for a dated design. Contrast and Saturation are top notch.
Once you have used this lens, you won't want to put it down.
Highly recommended!
