Average, but minor issue

Posted by: ktphotoclassic from monroe, mi on 01/22/2013Seems to be working fine, but the remote rarely works on the first try. you have to repeatedly push buttons until it finally syncs and works. VERY frustrating, especially when using for Netflix menus.

A real gamble

Posted by: ClemC from NY, NY on 11/30/2012This unit is a real gamble.
The first thing you need to try is upgrading the firmware. If that doesn't work (my experience#, you have a lemon and should return it or contact Philips for a refurb replacement right away.
It's not the flashiest or the fastest player. The remote will likely operate on just one battery. If so, you have one of the infamous "sticky" ones other reviews are talking about it. If it operates on two, you hopefully will have one of the better ones I got with my refurb.
The Netflix and Vudu software #the latter of which I barely use# are not the newest and latest but work fine as long as the hardware cooperates. Picture quality and USB playback as long as the firmware is current are just fine. WiFi operates as it should, but your router and modem are going to always be the weak points and that's a whole other very big subject.
Also, as some have noted, you can make this region free for DVDs #search for how to on other sites#, a nice little bonus. Good luck!

Great value for the price!

Posted by: DeaconFD from Los Angeles, CA on 09/02/2012The only thing that prevented me from giving this player a five star review is the remote. Had to be right in front of the unit for the signal to be read properly. Other than that, the overall quality of the player is great. I have an extensive DVD/Blu-Ray collection and have randomly run about 20 different DVD and Blu-Ray discs and the player has preformed flawlessly. It is also whisper quiet while operating. Have also made use of the Netflix connectivity without issue…

The Worst Blu-ray Player Ever-Known-to-Man
1
Posted by: techieguru from nyc on 06/26/2012This player is THE WORST piece of equipment I've ever owned. I'll never purchase another Philips item again because of the HORRIBLE customer service that goes along with it and advise all to do the same. I am filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau after I receive my now third refurbished player since my initial purchase 9 months ago. (BS 1 year warranty! They refuse to send me a new one/refund my money.) Review: Takes about 3-4 minutes after powering on, just to eject so that you can insert a disc. If you are in the middle of watching a movie and press pause, and try to switch to watch your tv, it will give you a problem As you press the 'input' button on remote to switch from 'blu-ray' to 'tv,' it quickly switches back to 'blu-ray' on its own preventing you from easily switching to 'tv.' You must do this 5+ times before you're actually able to get into your tv. Then, if you want to SWITCH back from the 'tv' to the 'blu-ray,' the disc will indicate that it "may not restart from paused point" and it NEVER DOES. Always restarts from the very beginning. So if you're an hour into the movie, have fun searching for where you left off! BUYER BEWARE!: There is an annotation INSIDE the manual (of course you only read AFTER you purchase) that indicates the player may behave this way if all other equipment is NOT "Philips" brand and that Philips is not responsible for any such problems ("Philips does not guarantee 100% interoperability with all HDMI CEC devices.") All the REFURBISHED ones sent have the same problems except they have an EXTREMELY LOUD buzzing sound while plugged in (even when turned off--impossible to tolerate, it is that loud!). The first player was my first Blu-Ray player purchase and I read people complaining about blu-rays being slow but THIS PLAYER IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL OF SLOW! I recently bought a Samsung half the price of this one that is AMAZING. This problem Philips player works like this: Power it on (lights up with "---"), have to wait 30 seconds to press eject 10+ times (which it does not eject), then front panel switches from "---" to "Hello," then you wait another 30-60 seconds and press eject 10+ times before it switches from "hello" to "on," wait another 30-60 seconds pressing eject (both on player and remote, doesn't matter, still doesn't work), until it finally says "eject." Furthermore, the customer service # has the same incompetent people working for them who LIE and pretend they are a "supervisor" of the other when they return your call, but then ultimately admit they all have the same job title of "Supervisor," and are on the same level as the last person who told you "they will have their supervisor call you back", claim they DON'T REPORT TO ANYONE and therefore have no boss. When I implied not to try to BS me by explaining 'a VP reports to a President, a President reports to a CEO, and therefore everyone has a boss, except a CEO/Chairman, so please connect me to your direct supervisor' was told, "good luck calling the CEO to resolve your problem," and then disconnected. When I asked for an address to write a letter of complaint, was told they would only give me a PO Box. When I said there should be an address of a legal department or physical address to send packages or small claims court suits, etc. to, was FALSELY ACCUSED of 'threatening legal action and therefore they she was going to disconnect the call.' I said "I am asking for an address, not threatening legal action" and she still, like a robot, told me she was disconnecting the call. I was told I was getting a NEW player this last incident, and then 2 days later, I received a call from ANOTHER rep, telling me they changed it in the system and will be sending another refurbished model.
Between the time you waste loading the player and finding the point you last left off when pausing (switching from tv to player), you can add an additional 30 minutes-1 hour of what your movie time should have been. As for the customer service who do NOTHING but send you more faulty products--DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM PHILIPS!

Horrible DVD Player!
1
Posted by: HWSCats from Charlotte, NC on 02/27/2012I purchased a Philips DVD to go with my Philips HDTV. Bad Move! The remote with brand new batteries has to be next to the device to have any effect. The device is noisy and cumbersome! Do not buy this DVD player!

Nice Blu-ray Player

Posted by: ToneTone123 from Wisconsin on 02/16/2012I would have to agree with some of the other reviews on the remote issue. It is a little slow to respond and needs to be directly pointed at the player in order to work. Other than that, it works great!! I love it! Can't beat the price!

Strong price, weak remote
3
Posted by: batman68 from Georgia on 01/20/2012We had to call the support number to help get this set up for netflix and our wireless network.
Like other reviewers, I agree that the remote could be improved. You must be pretty close and holding it "just so" to get it to work. If you want to just skip the remote, you can't entirely because there are only 4 buttons on the front of the machine.
I have no complaints about the picture quality or the price.

Love the Netflix option
4
Posted by: marierm from Los Angeles on 01/16/2012I bought this as an inexpensive upgrade to a Netflix ready, built in wireless Blu-Ray player. It works fine most of the time, but you really have to press the buttons hard to get the machine to respond, both on the remote and on the actual machine. So that's a bit annoying, but overall it's a good bet for the money.

Great Blue Ray for the average user
5
Posted by: Axon from Dallas, Texas on 12/17/2011Well once again I got this blue ray from another place but it's the same model, first off if your looking for many apps to rent movies this BR is not for you, there for it only has vudu and netflix, however if you rent movies and play them through the usb then this is for you it plays the most common formats avi,divx,wmv,mp4,mk and it also plays subtitles for foreing movies! which is nice, playing blue ray movies look reall nice on this BR, you also get the wifi adapter i have notice some comments that said they didnt get it, you get the adapter or it's built in the BR, i also read that the remote it's very sluggish to respond well i find out that the batteries are the ones to blame i just change them and problem solved, this BR also plays other dvd regions just look online on how to do this with this model.one thing tho you only get video and hdmi and coxial connections and thats it, but for the price i pay i cant complain.
