Good sound, range, and setup, but one fatal flaw
3
Posted by: from Austin, TX on 05/23/2012I really liked this speaker. The sound was good and at a good volume. It doesn't get very loud, but it could be heard all around our 500 sq foot patio. Setup was pretty easy. Plugged in everything and it worked right away, no fuss. We used this indoors in several places, and outdoors in various spots and the range was good. Had very limited static in a couple of spots, but easily fixed by moving it a few feet. This speaker works either plugged-in or on batteries. When using the proper rechargeable batteries (8 C cells) the speaker will automatically recharge the batteries. Now for the deal killer. When you are done using the speaker on batteries and you go to turn it off, it powers down and then 5 seconds later turns back on. Obviously this drains the batteries pretty quickly, which means it isn't ready for use the next time you pick it up. I tried 2 units, and both did the same thing. Really too bad too, because everything else was perfect.

Sounds good, easy to move

Posted by: from San Francisco, CA on 05/16/2012Not too expensive. Sounds great - i haven't had any volume problems. I can barely hook up a speaker and I work with this no problem. I've bought other Rocketfish products so I could have mulitple speakers in different areas of the house and i could do it myself!! I like the fact you can use batteries too in case your somewhere without an outlet. My dad liked it so much I got him one for his birthday.

Reliability -- NIL

Posted by: from Nova Scotia, Canada on 05/12/2012The first wireless speaker I bought only worked for 1 day and then would not turn on. I had inserted Ray-O-Vac NiMH rechargeable batteries at a cost of $65, so decided to replace it rather than get my money back. The replacement worked for about one month, being used about 10 hours a week over that time. Then, the unit would not turn off, either with the top manual button or the remote. Then it turned off and would not start again -- the unit is dead, just like my first one. It does not even show the charging light when plugged in and does not work on battery or AC power. I did not have range problems -- it worked at over 100 feet. I did experience long silent periods (5-10 seconds as well as sound blips) and the volume depends very much on the volume control at the source. If your source recording is quiet, or your source computer, iPod etc cannot give high output, then you won't get this to give you much volume. You are better off with the unit that comes with an amplifier and you use your own speaker, but it requires AC and after my experience, I don't want to buy Rocketfish products ever again. I would have loved for this to work properly for our summer enjoyment on the deck, but now I have to argue with the store that it has a defective design and should be withdrawn from the market until they an make it more robust, or stop charging almost $200 for it. Because I have owned it for over a month, I do not expect to get my money back, and the store is over 60 miles away. Makes you think twice about being a regular customer, right?

Posted by: from Arizona on 04/18/2012This is the second unit I have purchased for my patio outdoor speakers and this is by far better than the first ones I purchased. First ones were another brand.

would not work
1
Posted by: from on 02/03/2012we had problems installing the system, and had to pay a professional to try to make the entire system work. After paying lots of money, we were told that it would not work properly. The speaker itself was defective (would not turn on 70% of the time) and Best Buy said they could not do anything for us because we were 9 days past their deadline. Would not buy any of these again!

Great option for extending
5
Posted by: from on 12/23/2011My wife gave this to me as a gift and I couldn't be happier with it. This speaker is very portable and works well inside or out. I mostly use the speaker hooked up to a computer in conjunction with my computer speakers and the sound is great. If your computer only has one input for speakers, I'd recommend buying an audio jack splitter (very inexpensive less than $5). Many of my family and friends have gone out and purchased this product after seeing mine in use. Don't hesitate to buy this, it is a great product!

Excellent Speaker

Posted by: from Chase City, Va. on 11/04/2011I use this speaker with an internet radio. It was easy to hook up and the sound is great. I have taken the speaker onto my deck (quite some distance from the sending unit) and the reception was great.

Poor Sound Quality
1
Posted by: from Las Vegas on 11/03/2011The unit worked fine (hook-up, wireless range) just that the sound was below acceptable levels even turned all the way up. I have a TV outside and a spa about 30 feet away from the TV and thus the reason for the speaker. Unles you need something that is typical conversation level sound, this system doesn't deliver and the sound doesn't travel well either (cant hear it for 10-15 feet away). Maybe this was a defective unit? It was returned.

Can't connect to my Onkyo Receiver
1
Posted by: from Wayland, MA on 10/26/2011I have an Onkyo receiver with a Bose surround sound system. The Onkyo has speaker wire inputs for "B" speakers which can be in another room. But the Rocketfish only has composite plugs. So I can't plug in the Rocketfish into my Onkyo receiver. I looked for adapters to turn the composite plugs into speaker wire, but couldn't find any. When I called Rocketfish, they didn't offer me any solutions, and when I went back to Best Buy, they told me that it was impossible. I went to a local high-end sound retailer and they tried creating an adapter for me, but then said that because the Rocketfish has an amplifier built in to it, that if I used the adapter that they made for me that it would blow up the Rocketfish because the amount of sound that the Onkyo puts out is much higher than what the Rocketfish can handle. So i've been going around and around for 3 months on this and now Best Buy won't take back the Rocketfish because it's past the 30 day return window. So unless you are just using this on a very basic stereo, I don't recommend purchasing this item.

Nice speaker
4
Posted by: from Minneapolis, MN on 09/21/2011The Rocketfish speaker is great sounding, and portable - however the signal is broken by people moving about, so be prepared to move it around a bit if you're having a party. I'd strongly suggest keeping the receiver and speaker above your guests or the music is broken up quite a bit.

Easy to setup but not loud enough
3
Posted by: from Chicago, IL on 09/21/2011I bought one of these for a party I was having and wanted some music out on the deck. I have a nice receiver in my garage and just wanted to pipe the XM radio through this speaker. The setup was easy enough but IMO the speaker does not go anywhere near loud enough. I had about 25 people around and if you were more than 20 feet from the speaker it was hard to hear. The wireless signal also didn't seem to be very strong as it took me a few tries to get the transmitter in a place that let the signal come through uninterrupted. I didn't really have a chance to check out it's weatherproofing claim.

AVOID
1
Posted by: from Minneapolis on 09/17/2011My wife just bought this for my birthday and it just flat out doesn't work. First of all, I thought it would use a USB cable to connect to the PC. It doesn't. It uses an audio jack. So if you want to use your PC speakers AND send a signal to the wireless speaker, you're out of luck. And after hooking it up for giggles and grins, the unit couldn't send a clear signal from my office to the wireless speaker in the kitchen. (About 25ft away). AVOID this product. It will disappoint you.

Almost right
1
Posted by: from Loudoun, VA on 08/28/2011Great idea. Met my needs. But in connecting to audio preouts from my receiver, through the sender, the speaker has weak volume. If I really crank up the volume on my receiver (I'm talking unacceptable levels), I can get good volume from this speaker. So the power is there. I think if the speaker had more adjustment available in its volume control, I could make this work. But as it is, it is not usable. On the plus side, wireless connection was very good. Also, Best Buy staff at my local store were totally uninformed about how this product functions.

Great sound, great wireless connection

Posted by: from on 08/14/2011I love this speaker. I can't wait to have a second to link up with for stereo. I only have a couple suggestions. I love that I can put the C batteries in the speaker or plug it in if I want. I just wish the wireless router could have the option of having batteries too. I still have to keep that plugged in, so I cant bring it to camp for example unless electricity were available. Also, I wish the speaker could be a little louder on its max setting. The sound.is great, good bass, I just occasionally want to run it loud.

Low volume a disappointment

Excellent purchase for backyard use
5
Posted by: from on 07/14/2011We bought this to use in our backyard because we are outside alot. It is easy to install and very portable. We can take it from our deck to the fire pit area, to the hammock, to the garden - even the front yard so easily and it sounds great everywhere! My husband can even listen to sports on TV through it! Only downside - It does use alot of batteries if not plugged in, so i would recommend purchasing rechargable batteries for it.
