Synopsis

Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Saving Private Ryan - Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle AC3 - Blu-ray Disc (14 out of 14)
The best WWII ever, for 20 minutes
4
Posted by: from Milwaukee, WI on 05/03/2013Saving Private Ryan is one of the four or five best WWII films of all time. It would be the very best if it ended after 20 minutes, but after the D-Day landing, the rest of the film seems a bit conventional by comparison. Still, and excellent flick. Barry Pepper is a particular standout.

VERY realistic war movie

Posted by: from chapel hill on 05/02/2013One of Spielberg's best movies-SHOULD HAVE won best picture over Shakespeare in Love. Very intense war scenes-both at the beginning and ending of the movie. The less said about it if you haven't seen it the better. Looks much better on blu-ray than DVD.

Posted by: from NC on 02/03/2011I always have loved this movie, but blu-ray made it even better. There was just a little extra epicness to the film when I saw it in hd. If you already have seen this movie and like it then just know its worth the money to upgrade from dvd to blu-ray... If you have never seen this movie, please buy this, it is more than worth the money.

Posted by: from Savannah, GA on 01/22/2011To find one of the best movies of all time on Blu Ray for $10 online on BF was about the best deal I found all season. This was a gift and we watched the movie together and it was amazing. The cinematography and sound on this movie are something for all movies to aspire towards. If you have seen this movie, trust me it is better on Blu Ray. Its a good deal at $20 in my opinion.

Posted by: from West Chester, Ohio on 01/17/2011This is the most "Realistic" war movie I've ever seen. It's not for children! The graphics are amazing and detailed. There is a lot of "Gore," but war is hell. GREAT MOVIE!

Greatest war movie ever
5
Posted by: from Culver City, CA on 01/16/2011This film is the greatest war movie ever and a masterpiece of film. Definitely a lot of intense fight scenes (including a half hour long dramatization of the infamous Omaha beach landings(aka D-Day)), while at the same time showing the human side of the conflict. A great movie for anyone! Except perhaps young children, the blood and gore is very realistic.
