    Six Feet Under: Pilot
The premiere episode of the HBO drama Six Feet Under -- which was created by Alan Ball, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of American Beauty -- introduces viewers to the members of the Fisher clan, a family who owns and operates the Fisher and Sons Funeral Home in Los Angeles. After Nathaniel Fisher, the family patriarch, is killed in a Christmas Eve car accident, his wife and children find themselves having to cope with the myriad dramas that have been catalyzed and exacerbated by the tragedy. Chief among these is the homecoming of Nate (Peter Krause), the prodigal son who left the family business to work in Seattle. Upon his return, he discovers that his mother, Ruth (Frances Conroy), has been having an affair with Hiram (Ed Begley Jr.), a hairdresser; his sister Claire (Lauren Ambrose) has been dropping crystal meth; and his brother David (Michael Hall) has been conducting a closeted gay relationship with Keith, a police officer. Nate's one source of relief comes from Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), a woman he met on the flight from Seattle and with whom he quickly finds himself engaging in raunchy broom-closet sex. But their affair -- and the death of Nathaniel -- is overshadowed by both the intentions of a rival funeral company to buy out the family business and the discovery that Nathaniel wasn't exactly the man his family thought it knew. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Crossroads
Business at the Fisher's is slow, inspiring Nate (Peter Krause) and David (Michael C. Hall) to seek out an additional source of income and Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) to consider taking extra work at Kroehner's. Nate's workplace stress is exacerbated by Brenda's (Rachel Griffiths) visiting Australian friend Connor, who rubs Nate the wrong way, while David's workplace stress is dramatically reduced by news of a bus crash that has killed numerous local residents. Ruth (Frances Conroy), meanwhile, is stressed out by her complicated feelings towards Hiram, and Claire (Lauren Ambrose) is similarly stressed in her quest to find the meaning in a mountain hike with her outreach group. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Trip
David (Michael C. Hall), Nate (Peter Krause), and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) attend a funeral directors conference in Las Vegas, and get a vivid taste of the city's glitz and grit. Back at home, Rico (Freddy Rodriguez), whose wife is expecting their second child, returns to work at the Fisher's funeral home, but his return is clouded by the death of a baby from SIDS. And Ruth (Frances Conroy) gets in touch with her inner self after she signs up for a class on floral arrangement. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Room
Two generations of Fisher women try to juggle the demands of lust when Claire (Lauren Ambrose) meets and indulges a dangerous mutual attraction to Brenda's (Rachel Griffith) brother Billy (Jeremy Sisto), and Ruth (Frances Conroy) spurns Hiram (Ed Begley Jr.) and is subsequently hit on by Nikolai, the family's florist. David (Michael C. Hall) also has his hands full when he is hotly pursued by Tracy Montrose Blair, a fellow church member and overbearing divorcée. Meanwhile, Nate (Peter Krause) makes some unexpected discoveries about his late father, and the grief of an ornery widower, who has just lost his wife of 56 years, teaches everyone something about the unpredictable nature of love. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: The New Person
Nate (Peter Krause) and David (Michael C. Hall) hire Angela (Illeana Douglas) as a replacement for Rico: although she is good at what she does, it quickly becomes apparent that she is also very adept at speaking her mind. Brenda's (Rachel Griffiths) brother Billy (Jeremy Sisto) continues to prove his facility for unsettling everyone around him when he includes a somewhat shocking photograph in a gallery exhibit of his work, and Gabe continues to unsettle Claire (Lauren Ambrose) with his erratic behavior. Meanwhile, David (Michael C. Hall) renews some old familiarity with Keith, and Ruth (Frances Conroy) has dinner with lusty florist Nikolai. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Foot
Following the particularly messy death of a bakery owner, Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) has his hands full preparing the body for viewing. His task is complicated when the baker's foot goes missing -- little does he know that it's in the possession of Claire (Lauren Ambrose), who plans to use it to exact vengeance on her ex-boyfriend Gabe, who told the entire school about her toe-sucking exploits. Meanwhile, Nate (Peter Krause) learns that their business rival Kroehner has bought the house across the street, which he plans to turn into a cut-rate crematorium that will put the Fishers out of business. However, Kroehner's plan hits an unforseen obstacle when the house goes up in flames after Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) and Nate enjoy an incendiary session of their own in its abandoned living room. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Life's Too Short
Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) attempts to improve Nate's (Peter Krause) skills as a salesman by suggesting they pose as a grieving couple at several area funeral homes, while David (Michael C. Hall) improves his cruising skills when he and his new boyfriend Kurt decide to sample the disco scene. Claire's (Lauren Ambrose) life takes an unexpected turn when a tragedy brings her together with Gabe, the toe-sucking fetishist who humiliated her at school, and Ruth (Frances Conroy) has some unexpected experiences during a camping trip with Hiram. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Knock, Knock
After he and some fellow deacons are informed that Father Jack has presided over same-sex marriages, David (Michael C. Hall) decides that it's time to make his voice heard at church. Nate (Peter Krause) and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) get into a bad argument after Brenda visits Billy (Jeremy Sisto) at the institution where he's been committed, and Claire (Lauren Ambrose) realizes that Gabe hasn't rid himself of some bad habits when the two attend a party. Ruth, (Frances Conroy) meanwhile, shuts Hiram out of her life and then makes room for Nikolai. And after dealing with the very anal-retentive Tracy Montrose Blair, who made some very controlling demands for her aunt's funeral, the Fishers get a welcome break when Rico (Freddy Rodriguez) celebrates the christening of his newborn son at the funeral home. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Familia
Following the burning of the abandoned house across the street, the Fishers wonder if Claire (Lauren Ambrose) might be the mystery arsonist. In the midst of the arson investigation, Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) makes an appearance at her first dinner with the family, but her desire to make a good impression on Ruth (Frances Conroy) is severely compromised when Ruth discovers her and Nate (Peter Krause) in a somewhat graphic situation. Meanwhile, the family grapples with the funeral arrangements for a murdered Mexican-American gang member, from whom David (Michael C. Hall) mines some unexpected courage that helps him end an argument with Keith (Mathew St. Patrick). ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Brotherhood
Ruth (Frances Conroy) takes decisive and overdue action by inviting Hiram over for dinner and then going to work for Nikolai, the family's amorous florist. David (Michael C. Hall) also takes a stand when he casts a swing vote in the church committee's decision to hire a progressive young priest. Nate (Peter Krause) and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) decide to take a weekend vacation, unaware that Billy (Jeremy Sisto) might have objections to this, while an algebra class leads Claire (Lauren Ambrose) to question the subject's value in her life. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Will
The death of an inventor forms the backdrop for this episode, which sees Nathaniel's will being parceled out to his surviving family members. Ruth (Frances Conroy) finds herself reaping the benefits of her late husband's insurance policy, stocks, and money; Nate (Peter Krause) and David (Michael Hall) split the family business (to David's great horror); and Claire (Lauren Ambrose) gets money for college, which she considers trading for hard cash. In the aftermath of the will's reading, Ruth breaks up with Hiram (Ed Begley Jr.), Claire sucks her boyfriend's toes in the back of a hearse, and David gets a surprise -- and not entirely welcome -- visit from his ex-fiancée. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: An Open Book
The funeral of a porn star creates an uncomfortable situation for Ruth (Frances Conroy), who doesn't quite know how to cope with the casket-side presence of the dead diva's friends and co-stars. Deciding to spend some more quality time with Claire (Lauren Ambrose), Ruth takes her sullen daughter to visit some cousins, whose wholesome, perpetually cheerful lifestyle serves as even more of a shock than the porn star's funeral. Back at home, David (Michael C. Hall) has yet another argument with Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), this time over David's intent to take over his late father's position as deacon of their church. And Nate (Peter Krause) experiences an uncomfortable family visitation of his own when, sans Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), he has dinner with her parents and a disturbing introduction to her brother Billy (Jeremy Sisto). ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: A Private Life
David (Michael C. Hall) is forced to face his fears and insecurities about his sexuality in the wake of the homophobic murder of a gay man, while Billy's (Jeremy Sisto) latest prank forces Nate (Peter Krause) to agree with Brenda's parents that their son should be institutionalized. Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), however, isn't quite ready to agree. Meanwhile, Claire (Lauren Ambrose) tells her therapist a thing or two about the erratic Gabe, and Ruth (Frances Conroy) tells Robbie, a fellow florist, a thing or two about her secret love life. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: In the Game
A starlet lives fast, dies young, and leaves a beautiful corpse in the inaugural episode of the second season of HBO's Six Feet Under. As Fisher & Sons attends to the death of an ill-fated actress, Nate (Peter Krause), is haunted by the recent revelation that he has a potentially fatal brain condition -- and by the ever-present phantom of his father (Richard Jenkins), who brings a few friends to this week's vision. Meanwhile, Ruth (Frances Conroy) tries out some self-help ideas to connect with her children, especially David (Michael C. Hall), whom she's just learned is gay. Claire (Lauren Ambrose) reconnects with her erratic boyfriend, Gabe (Eric Balfour). David deals with his unresolved feelings for ex-boyfriend, Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), when he finds himself hanging out with Keith and his lover. The final missing Ecstasy pill (see the episode "Life's Too Short") makes an appearance at a queasy family dinner organized by Ruth and attended by everyone's significant others. But when Claire catches the friends of the deceased starlet snorting her ashes with their cocaine, the one-time crystal meth smoker (see the pilot episode) totally freaks out. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Plan
Ruth (Frances Conroy) "drafts the blueprint" for her own future happiness in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. When coworker Robbie (Joel Brooks) convinces her to accompany him to a meeting of self-help group The Plan, Ruth is as bored as she is annoyed. But when the seminar's dynamic speaker singles her out for interaction, the Fisher matriarch realizes that the foundation of her emotional house could use some work. Meanwhile, newly licensed funeral director Nate (Peter Krause) attends an L.A. Independent Funeral Director's lunch with David (Michael C. Hall) and applies his Seattle-bred lefty fervor to the proceedings. In an attempt to put her considerable intellect to use, Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) enrolls in a college biogenetics class but finds that her free-thinking ways don't mesh well with the toadying of the other students or the careerism of the instructor. And Claire (Lauren Ambrose) suffers through a painful reunion with the increasingly troubled Gabe (Eric Balfour). Angry at her advisor, Gary (David Norona), for ratting Gabe out to the authorities, Claire nevertheless turns to cop Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) for assistance after Gabe brandishes a firearm and nearly kills someone. "The Plan" marked season two, episode three of the made-for-cable drama. Rose Troche, director of acclaimed indie film Go Fish, directs. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: The Invisible Women
The death of an apparently friendless woman hits home with Ruth (Frances Conroy) in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. When Emily Previn (Christine Estabrook) chokes to death, Fisher & Sons can't find anyone to attend the funeral, but Ruth takes it upon herself to make the event special anyway. David (Michael C. Hall) tries to forge a special friendship with blind date Ben Cooper (Adam Scott), but the nascent romance is interrupted by David's cop ex-boyfriend, Keith (Mathew St. Patrick). Distraught over having accidentally killed a suspect, Keith finds solace of a decidedly carnal nature with David, then, in a fit of guilt about his unsuspecting boyfriend, announces that he doesn't want to see David anymore. Meanwhile, Claire (Lauren Ambrose) prepares for the SAT, freaks out when her friend Parker (Marina Black) cheats on the exam, and is surprised to learn that her school counselor, Gary (David Norona), senses sexual tension between himself and Claire. Nate (Peter Krause) experiences some sexual tension of his own when Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) continues her sexual dry spell. Ironically, though, she befriends one of her shiatsu clients (Kellie Waymire) -- who just happens to be a prostitute -- and volunteers to play the voyeur role in the fantasy of one of the woman's clients. This accomplished, she stages a dramatic about-face regarding her ambivalence to Nate: She proposes. "The Invisible Women" marked season two, episode five of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Back to the Garden
Relationships burn out, new ones ignite, and old ones are rekindled in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. While handling the funeral of a Jewish man who died accidentally from autoerotic asphyxiation, Nate (Peter Krause) befriends a female rabbi (Molly Parker) who shares her perspectives on life and death. Meanwhile, Claire (Lauren Ambrose) heads to the home of her Aunt Sarah (Patricia Clarkson) and hangs with the handsome young son (Stark Sands) of some of the aging hippies who are there for a laughable bacchanal. Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) learns that his suspicions about being cuckolded by his cousin Ramon (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) are ill-founded, but Ramon gets caught with his hand in a very different sort of cookie jar. Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) breaks up with Eddie (Terrell Clayton), setting the stage for a reunion with David (Michael C. Hall). And Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) -- stinging from an unpleasant encounter with her self-obsessed mother (Joanna Cassidy) -- introduces Nate to her hooker gal pal, Melissa (Kellie Waymire). "Back to the Garden" marked season two, episode seven of the made-for-cable drama. Guest star Parker previously gained acclaim in indie film circles for her portrayal of a necrophile undertaker in the funereal drama Kissed. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Someone Else's Eyes
Some loved ones attempt to recover from their problems, while others struggle not to in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. Nikolai (Ed O'Ross) continues to recover from his broken legs, spending eight weeks on the Fisher family couch. But Ruth (Frances Conroy) is annoyed to learn that his injuries are the result of an altercation with the Russian mob. Meanwhile, new outpatient Billy (Jeremy Sisto) gives sister Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) some difficult news about his path to mental health and totally freaks Claire (Lauren Ambrose) out with a bizarre form of art therapy. Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) continues to suffer from ill temper and sleeplessness, but insists to a worried David (Michael C. Hall) that it's not the result of post-traumatic stress from his job (see the episode "The Invisible Women"). Keith, himself, frets about druggie sister Karla (Nicki Micheaux), who promises to go into rehab, but has some disturbing methods of doing so. The biggest medical news of all, however, comes from Lisa (Lili Taylor, originally seen in the episode "Driving Mr. Mossback"), who moves to L.A. and announces to ex-boyfriend Nate (Peter Krause) that she's pregnant. "Someone Else's Eyes" marked season two, episode nine of the made-for-cable drama. Series creator Alan Ball wrote this episode, whose weekly death segment features a businessman killed by the errant lunch box of a high-rise construction worker. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: The Last Time
Long-simmering plot threads finally boil over in the second-season finale of HBO's Six Feet Under. The episode opens, atypically, with shots of the Fisher clan, setting up the expectation that one of them will provide the weekly corpse that is the hallmark of the series. Ultimately, though, it's Aaron (Glenn Fitzgerald), a terminally ill friend of Nate (Peter Krause), who dies -- not that Nate, himself, is off the hook. When his AVM worsens and his doctor insists on immediate, life-threatening brain surgery, he finally faces up to telling Ruth (Frances Conroy) about his condition. He also faces Lisa (Lili Taylor) and their newborn child, with whom grandma Ruth has been spending plenty of time. Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) has been spending her time at 12-step meetings for sex addicts. A meeting with ex-fiancé Nate provides plenty of 20/20 hindsight but little resolution, so Brenda skips town on the eve of his surgery. Claire (Lauren Ambrose) ultimately skips out on her own high-school graduation so she and David (Michael C. Hall) can wait with Ruth at the hospital. Beforehand, David finally tells Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) to stop treating him like a doormat and Claire (Lauren Ambrose) comes to terms with the fact that she's probably destined for community college. The only person with much cause to celebrate is Federico (Freddy Rodriguez), who uses his recent insurance windfall to buy his way into a full partnership in Fisher and Sons. As for the funeral home's dear, departed patriarch (Richard Jenkins), his spirit appears repeatedly to Nate, who ends the episode in total limbo -- just like the breathless audience. "The Last Time" marked season two, episode 13 of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: I'll Take You
Relationships in flux is the theme for this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. As Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) watches her self-absorbed parents (Joanna Cassidy and Robert Foxworth) renew their wedding vows, her own commitment to fiancé Nate (Peter Krause) teeters on the brink. Although she catches Nate reading racy passages from her novel-in-progress -- based on her recent sexual adventures (see "The Liar and the Whore") -- Brenda refuses to come clean with him about her compulsive cheating. This silence will come back to haunt her when Nate finds out about one of her escapades on his own. Elsewhere, Ruth (Frances Conroy) comes to some unhappy realizations about her clingy relationship with boyfriend Nikolai (Ed O'Ross); the epiphany comes, strangely enough, during a Sandra Bullock flick. As Claire (Lauren Ambrose) ponders enrolling in a local art school, her friendships with both Billy (Jeremy Sisto) and guidance counselor Gary (David Norona) continue to deepen. David (Michael C. Hall) and Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) take their relationship into the realm of parenthood as they meet with child welfare authorities in hopes of gaining legal guardianship of Keith's niece, Taylor (Aysia Polk). Meanwhile, as he prepares to bury a beloved neighbor lady, Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) learns that she has left him and wife Vanessa (Justina Machado) a considerable chunk of change. In flashbacks, Rico reminisces about the death of his own father and his subsequent first meeting with Nathaniel Fisher (Richard Jenkins). Finally, Ruth experiences a first meeting of her own when Lisa (Lili Taylor) calls and informs her of her grandmotherhood. "I'll Take You" marked season two, episode 12 of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: The Liar and the Whore
Counseling sessions abound in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. After a marriage preparation seminar with Rabbi Ari (Molly Parker), Nate (Peter Krause) finally comes clean with fiancée Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) about his outside dalliance and impending fatherhood. Brenda, however, remains mum about her own sexual escapades. She even engages in a therapeutic, retaliatory three-way with a pair of comely teenaged potheads. Meanwhile, Ruth (Frances Conroy) frets that Claire (Lauren Ambrose) may be depressed, but during a chat with Gary (David Norona), the girl's guidance counselor, Ruth learns that she herself may be the one with a problem. In fact, Claire seems downright giddy -- at least during a blissed-out mushroom trip with pal Parker McKenna (Marina Black). Self-help is the name of the game for David (Michael C. Hall), who comes clean about the way boyfriend Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) treats him like a doormat. David also counsels Keith to stand up to his imposing father (James Pickens Jr.) during a custody dispute over Keith's niece, Taylor (Aysia Polk). As for the Diaz clan, Vanessa (Justina Machado) needs some career counseling after Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) gets her fired by uncovering a homicide at the nursing home where she works. And Fisher & Sons needs some legal counsel when former client Catherine Collins (Harriet Sansom Harris from the episode "In Place of Anger") sues them with a little help from Kroehner. "The Liar and the Whore" marked season two, episode 11 of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Secret
As their marriage draws near, their respective sexual escapades come back to haunt both Nate (Peter Krause) and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. As her narcissistic mother (Joanna Cassidy) prepares to throw her a wedding shower, Brenda and her call-girl friend, Melissa (Kellie Waymire), head out to a "lifestyle party" in Orange County to hang with the swingers. Brenda drags herself to the shower the next morning, where a heart-to-heart from future mother-in-law, Ruth (Frances Conroy), causes her to be overwhelmed with guilt. Ruth, for her part, is reeling from what seems like rejection from the finally back-on-his-feet Nikolai (Ed O'Ross). She isn't reeling half as hard, however, as son Nate, who's facing unplanned fatherhood with somebody other than his bride-to-be. Nate tries to own up to his responsibilities, but he's so half-hearted about it that it simply drives Lisa (Lili Taylor) away. Meanwhile, Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) squabbles with boyfriend David (Michael C. Hall), but a more serious conflict with sister Karla (Nicki Micheaux) is just around the corner. As for Claire (Lauren Ambrose), she takes her art in an interesting new direction and ponders life at community college. "The Secret" marked season two, episode ten of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
The first anniversary of patriarch Nathaniel Fisher's death colors this Christmas episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. As they prepare for a Christmas get-together hastily organized by a testy Ruth (Frances Conroy), each member of the Fisher clan remembers his or her last moment with Nathaniel (Richard Jenkins). The dinner finds Claire (Lauren Ambrose) feuding with her nice-boy prospective new beau (Stark Sands); David (Michael C. Hall) wonders whether Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) will show up to cement their newly resumed couplehood; Ruth nurses boyfriend Nikolai (Ed O'Ross) through the two broken legs he suffered in an apparent robbery; and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) recovers from the shock of an unexpected guest at her mother's the night before. Brenda continues her reckless streak of erotic experimentation. After Nate (Peter Krause) suffers a sex-fueled seizure, she finally learns of her fiancé's illness. And Nate, despite this latest scare, befriends the participants of a biker funeral and accepts a symbolic gift from the deceased's hearty, lusty widow. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" marked season two, episode eight of the made-for-cable drama. Just as the series' first episode brought viewers Christmas in June 2001, this holiday-themed episode originally aired in April 2002. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: In Place of Anger
A long-lost relative and a bottle of vodka disrupt the Fisher routine in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. Ruth (Frances Conroy), still obsessed with The Plan (see "The Plan"), has decided to mend fences with her jet-setting, artsy sister Sarah (Patricia Clarkson). The Fisher matriarch's typically tight-lipped countenance, however, signals that all is not forgiven -- especially the incident years earlier when an adolescent Nate (Peter Krause) lost his virginity to a much older woman at Sarah's house. Nevertheless, Claire (Lauren Ambrose) is enchanted by her aunt's glamour and artistic encouragement. Meanwhile, Kroehner exec Mitzi Huntley (Julie White) whisks Nate and David (Michael C. Hall) off to a corporate party in an attempt to woo them to sell the business. David wavers, but Nate remains resolute. He's just as firm with Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) about sharing the news of their engagement with his family. But with Ruth tense about her sister's visit and everyone drunk on Nikolai's vodka, the engagement dinner is anything but celebratory. David's new romance with the clingy Ben Cooper (Adam Scott) doesn't turn out any better. When Ben professes his love, David admits that he's still hopelessly hung up on Keith (Mathew St. Patrick). "In Place of Anger" marked season two, episode six of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Driving Mr. Mossback
Nate (Peter Krause) and Claire (Lauren Ambrose) take a field trip to Seattle in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. When the titular Mossback family asks Fisher & Sons to pick up their aviation-phobic father's remains and drive them to California, Nate takes this opportunity to return to his former city of residence, and he brings his sister along for the ride. They stay with Lisa (Lili Taylor), Nate's amazingly politically correct friend and sometime lover, who is obviously still pining for the guy. Claire and Nate do a little bonding, but when his AVM medication causes a reaction, he has to give her some half-truths about his illness. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Margaret Chenowith (Joanna Cassidy) enlists the help of daughter Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) in an attempt to prove that her husband is having an affair. David (Michael C. Hall) baby-sits Taylor (Aysia Polk), his ex-boyfriend's niece, after the girl's mother skips town on a drug binge; Ruth (Frances Conroy), fresh from her stint on The Plan (see the episode "The Plan"), helps. But David is none too happy when she shares her conservative thoughts on how open he should be with the girl about his homosexuality. "Driving Mr. Mossback" marked season two, episode four of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Out, Out Brief Candle
Fisher & Sons enters the age of modern marketing in this episode of HBO's Six Feet Under. When a collegiate football player collapses from heat exhaustion, his death hits home with Nate (Peter Krause), who continues to hide his brain disease from his girlfriend and family. He puts on a brave face, however, for an intimate little dinner party to which Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) has invited the man who took her virginity (Tuc Watkins) and his wife. Meanwhile, Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) hits up Nate and David (Michael C. Hall) for a loan to help cover the down payment on a house for his family. Instead, however, the Fishers decide to invest in a "casket wall" -- a display case of all the latest coffin models. Federico's wife, Vanessa (Justina Machado), decides to ask her sister for the money, which poses a threat to Federico's manhood. Meanwhile, the threat of a takeover looms as Mitzi Huntley (Julie White), a feisty Kroehner exec, fires Matthew Gilardi (Garrison Hershberger) and starts pressuring the Fishers herself. David tags along when ex-boyfriend Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) visits his recovering addict sister, Karla (Nicki Micheaux), and her daughter, Taylor (Aysia Polk). Claire flies off the handle when she learns that her boyfriend, Gabe (Eric Balfour), has stolen embalming fluid from her basement to sell joints dipped in the stuff. Robbie (Joel Brooks), Ruth's resentful co-worker at Nikolai's flower shop, implores her to attend his graduation from The Plan, a self-help movement. And finally, Nate opens up to David about his illness. "Out, Out Brief Candle" marked season two, episode two of the made-for-cable drama. Actress Kathy Bates, who previously helmed the feature Dash and Lilly and episodes of HBO's Oz, directs. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Perfect Circles
Given that the opening sequence of each Six Feet Under episode begins with the death of a future Fisher & Sons client, it's rarely a good sign to see a major character appear right after the credits. But exactly two seasons after the series pilot that chronicled his father's death, Nate (Peter Krause) bites the big one -- or does he? After poking around with his ghostly father (Richard Jenkins) in a number of alternate realities in which Nate dies, becomes an invalid, or was never even born, Nate finally settles into a timeline in which he survives his brain surgery, marries Lisa (Lili Taylor) and eases into domesticity. As for the other Fisher siblings, David (Michael C. Hall) ekes out emotional progress with Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) in couples therapy, while Claire (Lauren Ambrose) blows off art-school classes to hang out with a hot, tattooed musician (J.P. Pitoc) whom she meets in a crematory. Meanwhile, family matriarch Ruth (Frances Conroy) enjoys time with her granddaughter but butts heads with her new daughter-in-law over child-rearing methods. On the business side of things, Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) revels in his new role as full partner in the renamed Fisher & Diaz funeral home, while Lisa tries to attend to every whim of her shrill, high-strung movie-producer boss (Catherine O'Hara). As for Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), she's nowhere to be found -- except in the anesthetized dream in which Nate married her instead of Lisa. Originally broadcast March 2, 2003, on HBO, "Perfect Circles" marked season three, episode one of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: The Eye Inside
The third season of Six Feet Under continues its long, slow setup with another episode devoted to patient character development. Claire (Lauren Ambrose) finally decides she's had enough of her hottie beau's philandering; she kicks Phil (J.P. Pitoc) to the curb and throws herself into art school, where new friend Russell (Ben Foster) and new instructor Olivier (Peter MacDissi) liven things up. Lisa (Lili Taylor), meanwhile, escapes a toxic relationship of her own by walking out on Carol (Catherine O'Hara), her neurotic movie-exec boss. A frustrated Nate (Peter Krause) resigns himself to moving his young family back into his mother's home. Ruth (Frances Conroy) is overjoyed at Nate's return, although she's also busy enjoying the hijinks of Bettina (Kathy Bates), her straight-talking, shoplifting new insta-best friend. As for David (Michael C. Hall) and Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), they struggle to loosen up and enjoy a poolside vacation together. Fun is eventually had, although their return to the city soon destroys any easygoing momentum they've attained. Amidst such minutiae, the biggest drama occurs with this week's featured death: a young woman (Megan Austin Oberle) mowed down by a car as a direct result of a cruel prank played by friends. Originally broadcast March 16, 2003, on HBO, "The Eye Inside" marked season three, episode three of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: You Never Know
When Fisher & Diaz is called upon to provide funeral services for a disgruntled former office worker who died in the middle of a murderous rampage, moralistic Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) tries to put his foot down and refuse the business. The resulting friction with new partners David (Michael C. Hall) and Nate (Peter Krause) fuels Rico's longstanding resentment against the Fishers. Meanwhile, Lisa (Lili Taylor) deals with a whole different sort of office politics as she scurries around attending to Carol (Catherine O'Hara), the maniacal movie-exec boss with whom she and Nate reside. Although she's supposed to be merely Carol's personal chef, Lisa's duties are so extensive that she and Nate can barely find time to have uninterrupted sex. Claire (Lauren Ambrose), however, does almost nothing but have sex with Phil (J.P. Pitoc), the muscular musician she's been dating. But while Phil's off enjoying extracurricular relationships with other women, Claire finds time to bond with Russell (Ben Foster), a fellow art student. Ruth (Frances Conroy), too, makes a new friend: Bettina (Kathy Bates), a pal of her artsy sister Sarah (Patricia Clarkson). Deep in withdrawal from prescription painkillers and under Bettina's strict watch, Sarah tries to trick naïve Ruth into giving her some relief; instead, Ruth pops pills and bonds with straight-talking Bettina. As for Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), he's had enough bonding with David during their joint counseling sessions. Attending a one-on-one session with their shrink, he finally unloads some of his relationship angst. These feelings spill out again later at a dinner party during which Nate and Lisa find themselves sizing up David and Keith's relationship, and vice versa. Originally broadcast March 9, 2003, on HBO, "You Never Know" marked season three, episode two of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Everyone Leaves
As the lives of the Fisher clan drift into isolation, the funeral of Keith's great aunt (Ann Weldon) sets the stage for a major showdown between discontented lovers Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) and David (Michael C. Hall). En route to San Diego for the memorial, the couple quarrel over Keith's continuing enthusiasm for extracurricular sex -- and David's emerging distaste for same. But the real conflict comes when Keith decides that it's time to confront his father (James Pickens Jr.) about the physical abuse he once heaped on his kids. The outraged patriarch lashes out, and when David comes to Keith's defense, Keith tells him to butt out of his family business. A disconsolate David heads back to L.A., where Nate (Peter Krause) is growing worried about his wife, Lisa (Lili Taylor), who hasn't checked in since leaving on a road trip. Nate busies himself by consoling Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) over an icky run-in with her insane brother Billy (Jeremy Sisto). Confessing that his latest antics include a stab at physical, instead of the usual emotional, incest, she nonetheless finds herself breaking her own sexual taboos during an impassioned, although abortive, kiss with Nate. Claire (Lauren Ambrose) learns that Russell (Ben Foster), too, has gone beyond the pale when he confesses to a sexual dalliance with bisexual art teacher Olivier (Peter MacDissi). The youngest Fisher dumps her boyfriend as forcefully as possible, although Russell doesn't seem to get the hint. As for the Fisher matriarch, Ruth (Frances Conroy) gets the hint that shy embalmer Arthur (Rainn Wilson) isn't capable of the physical relationship she craves. She, too, dumps her man. Originally broadcast May 4, 2003, on HBO, "Everyone Leaves" marked season three, episode ten of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Making Love Work
An attractive, middle-aged woman (Donna Bullock) dies while waiting in line at a self-help seminar, the apparent victim of a massive blood clot from a long-ago nose job. But it's another corpse -- an awesomely large one that falls out of its casket in the middle of the night -- that presents a headache for Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) and his new intern, Arthur (Rainn Wilson). On watch at the funeral home while Nate (Peter Krause) and Lisa (Lili Taylor) go camping with another couple, the hapless undertakers must enlist the help of Claire (Lauren Ambrose) and Russell (Ben Foster) in returning the voluminous body to its oversized coffin. Russell is on hand because, despite her decision not to date him, Claire has somehow ended up taking his virginity instead. This turn of events pleases her until David (Michael C. Hall) insinuates that Russell is gay, after all -- a notion she dismisses out of hand. Ruth (Frances Conroy), too, finds herself falling for a man of indeterminate sexual proclivities: stuffy, virginal Arthur, whose old-fashioned manners and idiosyncrasies charm her despite their large age gap. As for Nate, he's none too charmed by the constraints that new fatherhood imposes on his camping trip with his wife. Unable to get gloriously stoned or go off on walkabout like he did as a bachelor, he instead finds himself clashing with Lisa, who's freaking out about the deficiencies in their love life since she gave birth to Maya. Eventually, she and Nate reconcile with some seriously twisted al fresco sex. But Nate is haunted by a daydream about Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) stalking him. Originally broadcast April 6, 2003, on HBO, "Making Love Work" marked season three, episode six of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Opening
The suicide of a recently jilted woman hits close to home for Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) -- who continues to worry that his own wife (Justina Machado) is clinically depressed -- and for Nate (Peter Krause), who sympathizes with the woman's boyfriend's desire to end a relationship that stifled him. Nate's misgivings about his marriage come to a head at an art show featuring works by Claire (Lauren Ambrose), her boyfriend Russell (Ben Foster), and Billy Chenowith (Jeremy Sisto). There, Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) officially meets Lisa (Lili Taylor) and immediately recognizes that her massage appointment (in the episode "Tears, Bones and Desire") was actually an undercover reconnaissance mission. Brenda privately reassures Lisa that Nate is all hers, but tensions between the couple continue to run high. Ultimately, though, they realize it's time to stop pretending, and they resolve to settle for being friends, lovers and co-parents rather than picture-perfect husband and wife. David (Michael C. Hall), meanwhile, pretends to be okay with the threesomes in which he and Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) are now frequently engaging. Actually, however, he has deep misgivings about the hookups -- and the relationship. Claire feels none too secure about her own romance, especially after Billy confirms, through personal experience, that Olivier (Peter MacDissi), their mutual mentor, has a thing for sleeping with his students regardless of gender. As it turns out, though, Olivier's trysting partner for the evening is none other than Margaret Chenowith (Joanna Cassidy), Brenda and Billy's recently widowed mother. If only Ruth (Frances Conroy) were as sexually forthright as Margaret, perhaps she wouldn't end up sleeping alone, rebuffed by virginal junior mortician Arthur (Rainn Wilson). Originally broadcast April 27, 2003, on HBO, "The Opening" marked season three, episode nine of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: The Trap
Nate (Peter Krause) continues his descent into quiet desperation as Fisher & Diaz prepares to bury the recently unearthed remains of a young husband and father who disappeared without a trace decades earlier. Adding to Nate's just-married angst, Lisa (Lili Taylor) spends her time micromanaging his finances instead of finding a new job of her own. She also goes ballistic when Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) turns up to make amends with Nate as part of a 12-step recovery program for sex addicts. Nate and Brenda share a few drinks, but he keeps his guard up and expresses none of his doubts about his sudden matrimony. David (Michael C. Hall), too, is haunted by an old lover: Terry (Matt Winston), a fellow singer in the gay men's chorus, who reminds David of their brief and frenzied encounter years ago in a department-store men's room. Ashamed of his own past repression, David is relieved to realize he's finally at peace with his sexual identity. Speaking of which, Claire (Lauren Ambrose) finds her feelings in disarray when Russell (Ben Foster), her supposedly gay best friend, declares that he's actually straight and wants to date her. She considers it -- until Olivier (Peter MacDissi), her manipulative art professor, advises her to shun emotional intimacy if she wants to become a great artist. Blowing Russell off, Claire focuses on her new job as Olivier's assistant. Federico (Freddy Rodriguez), too, hires a new sidekick: Arthur (Rainn Wilson), a mortuary school student who agrees to work for nothing but room and board at the Fisher house. As for Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), he's still stuck in the same terrible job as a rent-a-cop. A disturbing altercation with a fellow security guard, however, convinces him it's time to look for other employment. Originally broadcast March 30, 2003, on HBO, "The Trap" marked season three, episode five of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: I'm Sorry, I'm Lost
With Lisa (Lili Taylor) still missing, mortality hangs heavily in the air as Six Feet Under begins its third-season finale. Simultaneously, however, romantic and sexual liaisons spring -- and cling -- to life. Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) enjoys a chaste, quirky date with a sexy neighbor, while Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) finds solace from his marital problems in the arms of a stripper, David (Michael C. Hall) reluctantly agrees to reconcile with Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), and a defiant Ruth (Frances Conroy) decides to marry George (James Cromwell) after all. Her announcement elicits a variety of negative reactions from her children. A distraught Nate (Peter Krause) drips with contempt, while diplomatic David says the timing is just bad. Pouty Claire (Lauren Ambrose) can't believe her mother would try to replace the late Nathaniel (Richard Jenkins) so suddenly. But as Claire embarks on a fanciful tour of the afterlife, her departed father tells her that her hang-ups about the impending nuptials are her own problem. While wandering around the great beyond, Claire encounters a variety of deceased characters -- including, to her surprise, ex-boyfriend Gabe (Eric Balfour) and her own recently aborted child, who's being cared for by Lisa herself. Whether Claire's wanderings are a dream or a visitation, one thing's for certain: Lisa really is dead. Nate receives a fateful phone call confirming that her nearly unidentifiable body has been discovered. Unaware of the news, his siblings reluctantly attend their mother's wedding while Nate drinks himself into a stupor and instigates a bar brawl. Bloody and broken, he nearly drunk-drives to his own death, but instead he turns to the one person he's been fleeing from all season: Brenda. Originally broadcast June 1, 2003, on HBO, "I'm Sorry, I'm Lost" marked season three, episode 13 of the made-for-cable drama. In addition to the show's typical corpse-of-the-week opening, a second white title card eventually appears to announce the death of "Lisa Kimmel Fisher, 1973-2003." ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Twilight
Lisa (Lili Taylor) has been missing for two weeks, leaving Nate (Peter Krause) to stew and the rest of the family to slowly lose hope. Despite -- or perhaps because of -- her certainty that her daughter-in-law is dead, Ruth (Frances Conroy) plunges into a new romance with George Sibley (James Cromwell), the handsome mourner who comforted her during a recent funeral (see "Death Works Overtime"). The Fisher matriarch even toys with wedding her new beau until she learns of his six previous marriages and decides to proceed more carefully. David (Michael C. Hall), in contrast, decides the time for caution is over. After impulsively sleeping with his friend Patrick (David Hornsby), he dumps Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) and moves out of their apartment. Nate, too, goes in for some reckless sex; he beds Allison Williman (Anne Dudek), the troubled daughter of a serial killer (Graham Beckel) who recently received the death penalty and was buried by Fisher and Diaz. Afterwards, however, Nate feels just as empty and distraught about Lisa as ever. Not that he's ready for comfort -- at least not from Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), who gets an angry brush-off when she turns up at the house to offer her support. But Claire (Lauren Ambrose), who just happens to witness the end of their argument, does receive some assistance from Brenda, who agrees to accompany her on a trip to an abortion clinic. Originally broadcast May 18, 2003, on HBO, "Twilight" marked season three, episode 12 of the made-for-cable drama. Although her character, Bettina, had been absent from the show since mid-season, actress/director Kathy Bates steps in to helm this episode. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Death Works Overtime
As the Fisher and Diaz funeral home fills up with clients, Nate (Peter Krause) continues his frantic search for the missing Lisa (Lili Taylor). The police recover her car from a parking lot up the coast, but Lisa herself is nowhere to be found. Federico (Freddy Rodriguez), meanwhile, finds out about the prescription-drug abuse that led to his wife's recent collapse. His concern turns to anger, however, when sister-in-law Angelica (Melissa Marsala) treats Vanessa (Justina Machado) to some expensive retail therapy on Rico's dime, then talks trash about him to his face. Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), too, suffers through familial angst when she gathers with Billy (Jeremy Sisto) and her mother (Joanna Cassidy) to scatter her father's ashes. The ceremony goes about as well as any Chenowith family get-together, though Brenda later finds refuge in the confines of her scrappy new apartment. Ruth (Frances Conroy) also seeks solace from an unexpected source, George Sibley (James Cromwell), a funeral mourner who happens to meet her when she's at her weepiest about daughter-in-law Lisa's probable fate. There's no comfort for Claire (Lauren Ambrose), either, when she fights with traitorous ex-mentor Olivier (Peter MacDissi) and sexually confused ex-boyfriend Russell (Ben Foster). As if things couldn't get any worse, the baby of the Fisher clan also finds out she's going to have a baby. Originally broadcast May 11, 2003, on HBO, "Death Works Overtime" marked season three, episode 11 of the made-for-cable drama. With three separate passings chronicled in its atypically comic opening sequence, this episode marks a departure from the show's usual solemn, single-death sequence. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Timing & Space
While wife Lisa (Lili Taylor) is away at a cooking convention, Nate (Peter Krause) once again finds himself face to face with former fiancée Brenda (Rachel Griffiths). But the occasion isn't a happy or even a nostalgic one: Bernard Chenowith (Robert Foxworth), Brenda's psychiatrist father, has died of cancer, and Nate feels honor-bound to attend the funeral. Federico (Freddy Rodriguez) offers to have his wife watch the baby, but Vanessa (Justina Machado) seems so depressed and flighty that Nate just brings Maya to the funeral with him instead. Given the assorted tics of the surviving Chenowiths, the memorial proves anything but typical. But Lisa offers a standard-issue reaction to Nate's having exposed her daughter to death (and to the touch of his dreaded ex): She throws a hissy fit. Meanwhile, Ruth (Frances Conroy) is all atwitter about Arthur (Rainn Wilson), the strangely beatific junior mortician who now lodges in her home; she dotes on him so devotedly it's like she's the youngster, not him. Russell (Ben Foster) also lavishes Claire (Lauren Ambrose) with similar fervor as the youngest Fisher grows more attached to her pal-turned-lover. Elsewhere, Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) and David (Michael C. Hall) clash during a shrill if fabulous brunch thrown by David's flamboyant, Hollywood-obsessed friends from the gay men's chorus. Originally broadcast April 13, 2003, on HBO, "Timing & Space" marked season three, episode seven of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Six Feet Under: Tears, Bones and Desire
Threesomes, romantic triangles, and even polygamy intersect in the lives of the Fisher family when they're asked to bury Daddy (Leon Rippy), the patriarch of a commune known as "The People." Nate (Peter Krause) and Ruth (Frances Conroy) both find themselves charmed by Daddy's unorthodox clan -- Nate by one of his daughters and Ruth by one of his wives. Meanwhile, Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) and David (Michael C. Hall) bring an unconventional element into their own union: Sarge (Josh Stamberg), a burly hunk who ends up in their bed after an afternoon of paintball and an evening of hard drinking. Claire (Lauren Ambrose) isn't quite so willing to share her man; she freaks out when she suspects there may be something going on between her boyfriend, Russell (Ben Foster), and her Machiavellian art professor, Olivier (Peter MacDissi). By these standards, Ruth's furtive crush on intern Arthur (Rainn Wilson) seems downright wholesome, although her feelings don't remain hidden for long once she starts kissing him. Lisa, however, is perfectly capable of keeping a secret, and she does so after meeting Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) under an assumed name by posing as a massage client and picking her brain. Originally broadcast April 20, 2003, on HBO, "Tears, Bones and Desire" marked season three, episode eight of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

    Six Feet Under: Nobody Sleeps
Although Six Feet Under often dwells on death -- such as this week's depiction of a scenic designer named Kevin Lamb (Dennis Christopher) who stages his lover's funeral as a miniature opera -- "Nobody Sleeps" also revolves around the birthday of the Fisher matriarch. Electrified by her daring, naughty new friend Bettina (Kathy Bates), Ruth (Frances Conroy) loosens up a little and actually has some fun on her special day. Part of that is thanks to Lisa (Lili Taylor), who, despite the objections of husband Nate (Peter Krause), manages to throw a lovely and somewhat rowdy party for her mother-in-law. Even David (Michael C. Hall) has fun, despite his continuing troubles with Keith (Mathew St. Patrick), which have been thrown into sharp relief by Kevin's elaborate tribute to his late partner. The only person to miss the festivities is Claire (Lauren Ambrose). She's busy having the night of her life getting drunk and talking trash with her pal Russell (Ben Foster), her art teacher Olivier (Peter MacDissi) and one of Olivier's big-wig artist friends. A drunken Nate, also enjoys some rambling conversation -- with the taunting specter of his stultified father (Richard Jenkins), whom Nate fears he's becoming. Originally broadcast March 23, 2003, on HBO, "Nobody Sleeps" marked season three, episode four of the made-for-cable drama. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
