Expected more surround sound effect5

Using it in a large open space doesn't give me the sound effects I would prefer. Traditional surround system would have been ideal, but didn't want to run wires. This system works much better than just TV or putting all 5 speakers up front.0 out of 0 found this review helpful.

We have an older 40" Sony Bravia XBR hanging on the wall with only 1 HDMI input and was contemplating a new TV because its hard to live with just 1. We've got DirecTV and BluRay and Apple Tv but only 1 HDMI. Anyway, went to BestBuy to get a phone and also walked out ordering this guy. So to be clear, we had only been relying on the sound from the TV so this sound bar was an amazing leep forward. I am amazed that it actually does wrap the sound to some extent. I was hoping it would do that but wasnt relying on it because lets face it....ITS A SOUNDBAR. If you're expecting absolute super home theater surround sound you will probably be disappointed somewhat because ITS A SOUNDBAR. The sound it produces is pretty accurate and bass can be a bit boomy until you get it dialed in and find a good place for the wireless sub. We have a dedicated home theater room with a new sony VPL-HW30EA projector on a 106" screen and would NEVER expect asoundbar to fill the room. with the same accuarcy as my complete surround sound system does. All in all, I love this system for a small room. It gets plenty loud and I can hear everyone talking on screen.0 out of 0 found this review helpful.

I have been considering the purchase of a sound bar for a couple of months and have read a lot of reviews reflecting upon a variety of products. I settled on the Sony 550 and waited. Finally, Best Buy put this on sale and I purchased this product. I have never had a Home Theater System or a a sound bar before. We have always listened to our TV through the TV speakers. I have heard other peoples systems and was reasonably impressed. Having purchased a new Samsung Smart TV a couple of months ago, the sound quality was somewhat poor and the volume had to be turned up quite a bit. This is what stimulated our desire to look at the sound bars.
The installation, following the manual, was very straight forward and since I use primarily, HDMI cables for input. I was able to put this into service in a very short period of time. It worked immediately connecting the Sony Receiver unit via HDMI cable to our ATT Uverse receiver and then I used the HDMI cable from the Samsung mounted (HDMI2 ARC) and snaked through the wall and attached this to the Sony's HDMI TV outport port. The DVD player connected via HDMI to the Sony receiver marked DVD input.
However, I did run into one glitch. The Samsung is a smart TV so when I used the TV in "Smart" mode, I did not get any audio whatsoever on Netflix and Amazon. I thought that when I used a high speed cable connected between the Samsung HDMI ARC port and the Sony HDMI ARC port that the audio would be bi-directional. Not true. Sony, provides in the box an eight to nine foot optical cable. So I snaked this through the wall and and connected this to the TV and the Sony receiver. Victory. I began receiving high quality sound through the Sony speakers.
I, wholeheartedly, recommend this unit to people who want to upgrade their sound quality with a modest expense and very little effort. Not bad for a 70 year old man still interested in Technology.2 out of 2 found this review helpful.

Doesn't overmodulate, yet can be heard throughout the entire house (2000 sq ft).
Hooks up to the tv easily.2 out of 2 found this review helpful.

I needed to upgrade my surround sound and I found this...not the same as true surround system, but my space is limited and tight so this was a great investment.2 out of 2 found this review helpful.
