Hardcore sci fi geeks were nonplused when Paramount Pictures assigned prolific hyphenate J. J. Abrams the task of rebooting the 40-year-old STAR TREK franchise. Although the casting of Leonard Nimoy to play Spock Prime assuaged initial fears, fans had a right to be dubious. After all, the previous administrator of the studio's tent pole had run it into the ground with formulaic storytelling, too often focusing on the dreaded "space anomaly of the week." As the studio released trailers, Abrams clearly accomplished a task no one else had done in years: he made young people excited about STAR TREK. Moreover after the film's release it became clear that Abrams and his collaborators managed to honor Gene Roddenberry's vision--and the canon of the 700+ previous installments--while allowing it to progress in new, exciting directions. The cast is superb, especially Karl Urban who eerily channels DeForest Kelley in his performance as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy. This may not be your father's STAR TREK, but it's a worthy successor. The high-definition video transfer is breathtaking, and the Dolby Digital mix is superb. Best Buy's limited edition gift set includes four replica Starfleet division badges, which QMx reproduced from the originals used in the film.

This Star Trek Blu-ray Gift Set had all of the extras included for the deluxe set with the added bonus of the exclusive to Best Buy Star Trek Movie Insignias (one for each department, Command, Science, Medical & oddly enough in an homage to the Original Series, the 4th Insignia is for Nursing.) The Blu-ray transfer looks as fresh & clean as the film was at the theater. The sound comes through our 5.1 surround sound system in a very crisp and clear fashion. JJ Abrams worked hard to communicate the vastness of space & the immense size of the Narada versus the Federation ships. The introduction of the USS Enterprise in this movie reminded me of the classic long tease reveal of the Big E in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The extras include just about everything you would want to see as a fan including the deleted scenes involving the Klingons. The commentary by JJ Abrams & company often took off on a tangent (lots of ADHD) but they rescued themselves with some fascinating insights & detailed reasons on the choices both made and not made. This is one of the rare films I could watch every day and not get tired of the repeated viewings.

J.J. Abrams does an incredible job bringing the Star Trek franchise back to life. This new movie, whether you want to call is a reboot (remake), a sequel or a prequel, bring Star Trek to a new generation in a bold and exciting way while still capturing the essence of what Star Trek movies have been for over 30 years. The new cast does a great job of honoring as well as reinventing the original crew of the Enterprise from the 60's TV show and the action heavy style helps bring in new fans for future Star Trek films. The special effects really come alive on this Blu-Ray, whether it's the newly designed Enterprise or just the transporter sequence. I've watched this movie with fellow Trekkies/Trekkers as well as some who have never even watched a single movie or episode but EVERYONE has truly enjoyed this movie and can't wait for the next one. A couple fun cameos, which I will not name just in case you don't know, really bring in a couple laughs for all and some fun memories for true Star Trek fans.
