Synopsis

When Todd Anderson (Storm P) signs a 30-million-dollar contract with the New Jersey Nets after being named the number one NBA draft pick of the year, his mother (Jenifer Lewis) vows to prevent her son from forgetting his roots. Not used to balancing his new life with his old, Todd mistakenly invites family and friends from his old neighborhood to his multi-million-dollar house for a cookout on the same day of an important endorsement interview. Though his extravagant family cookouts were welcome at his old digs, Todd's stuffy new neighbors -- particularly the conservative Republican Judge Halsted Crowley (Danny Glover) -- are less than thrilled with the arrival of Todd's massive family. Complicating the situation further is the eccentric neighborhood security guard (Queen Latifah), who takes on the heady assignment of ensuring that none of the private community's rules are broken, as well as two thugs who, determined to get an autographed pair of sneakers, hold up the cookout at gunpoint. Directed by Lance Rivera, The Cookout also features performances from Ja Rule, Eve, Farrah Fawcett, and Jonathan Silverman. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

The Cookout: AMG Review
Derek Armstrong , AMG

It wants to be Barbershop with a barbecue, but The Cookout goes down like a piece of burnt chicken whose bones get lodged in your windpipe. The film has a rare ability to be offensive, and there's nothing well done about it. The Cookout might have had an easier time with fewer ambitions -- set the narrative entirely on one Saturday afternoon, and introduce the wacky characters within that context. But The Cookout doesn't even get to the cookout until 45 minutes in, devoting its misguided first half to star basketball player Todd Anderson (Storm P) grappling with the financial and social repercussions of going pro. This part of the film is a little weird and unfocused, but at least it's not yet serving up the despicable stereotypes at full speed. If The Cookout weren't from a story by Queen Latifah, it would be tagged as racist without a moment's hesitation. The cruel characterizations of Todd's extended family are borderline irresponsible -- a pair of overweight brothers constantly stuff their faces, and one cousin has six kids from six different unknown daddies. Then there are the parts that are just plain bizarre. The unstable disaster known as Farrah Fawcett gets cast as a racist neighbor, the unlikely wife of a judge played by Danny Glover, who seems to have contracted Fawcett's inability to form sentences. Latifah embarrasses herself even more than they do, mugging through a kooky rent-a-cop role as though "Oscar nominee" were a typo on her résumé. The fact that Todd's "right girl" shows up with only 20 minutes left is yet another structural flaw. In that role, Eve, the film's only casting link to Barbershop, makes a game attempt to save the film from itself. But by this point, there's just been too many party fouls. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
