Fast scanner4

Well, it's a great scanner when it works. I am on my third one now within a month and this one is working just fine. The first one didn't turn on, second one quit after scanning about 100 papers. Best buy was great about exchanging these as it was still under 30 day return policy. My third scanner is working wonderfully, is very fast and easy to use. I like the way you can create folders and just "drop" your scanned papers in the right folder. Or just export them to your documents file as PDF. I am loving the ease of use and the speed which it scans. I will recommend this product as long as you get the extended warranty on it. I am just afraid that it will quit on me again! One big drawback is that the software isn't password protected , so all your scanned papers are accessible to whomever is using your computer.0 out of 0 found this review helpful.

Horrible product1

This scanner does not work on the Mac. Despite multiple scanners and software updates and multiple emails for technical support, this scanner does not work. This is the only product I have purchased that I have placed in the trash. Best Buy is a fantastic store but this product does not work well on the Mac operating system0 out of 0 found this review helpful.

I already had an all-in-one HP OfficeJet 8600 to do my scanning, but wanted something that would include OCR for searchable PDFs in my workflow, with software for document management. The NeatDesk scanner is really very fast, and I love that it scans front and back simultaneously and FAST! That's about all it does well, though. As for the hardware, it has guides for only three specific document sizes: cards, receipts and documents. If your documents are somewhere in-between they may rotate and get crunched. The software seems to compensate as much as it can, though, if your scan was crooked. The device also lacks support to hold up your source documents, so they flop backwards and you have to hold them in place yourself. On to the software. The mac version of the software is actually pretty nimble. But it's very ugly, and the workflow appears to be centered on receipts. The interface is sub-optimal, with the scanned image being difficult to review and work with. The screen real estate is poorly utilized. I tried the PC software instead. I was able to download it from their site with no issues; I had read that if you bought one or the other you were stuck with that version. Not true for me. The PC version, however, was a tiny bit more sightly, but INCREDIBLY SLOW--and I use a blazing fast Alienware laptop with SSD and 32GB RAM. PC interface is a bit better, though, and editing capabilities in the document list view are fantastically efficient. On the flip side, when editing the OCR'd form data for a scanned doc, you have to type in relevant details manually (like title, etc.), whereas the Mac version allowed you to drag OCR'd text from the scan into the form. Neat has a long way to go. The PC version is so slow it takes several seconds to change folders (instant on Mac) and even up to 20 seconds at times. Images are slow to render. If it weren't for the horrible software performance making it painful to use, I would have probably used my PC for scanning and kept the Neat. As it is, I'm returning it today. I may look them up in another 2 years. They have a way to go, and looks like they've been working on it for some time already.
Also as it turns out, the latest HP software for Mac includes scan to PC, which was requisite for making your scans searchable PDFs. I also found that the Scan to PDF action was an Automator script that could be tweaked, so after my scans get OCR'd they now get sent to Evernote software instead of dumped into Finder. So in the end I'm happy. Get to keep using my 8600 for easy scanning, and my searchable documents are sitting pretty in a local notebook in aesthetically pleasing Evernote--which also happens to meet my basic needs.3 out of 3 found this review helpful.

Poor Technical Support1

I purchased the NEATDESK for Mac with the intentions of going paperless. The install was very straight forward. After the installation was complete the scanner would not operate. I went to the website and located a newer software update and I downloaded it and did an install. Still no working scanner. I did an un-stall of the software and re-installed it again with no luck. I notified technical support and it took 2 days for a reply for a possible solution. Their support was go to the website and try this and try that, none of which worked. I consider myself to be very computer savy and understand Mac's very well. I now know why there are so many negative reviews about this product. Most of the negative reviews are with technical support and that would be my view as well. More work and support needs to be given to a product that cost almost $400 if they want to sell very many. If you read the reviews for the windows version of this product they are worse than the Mac version. Come on Neat you can do better than this.1 out of 1 found this review helpful.

we bought it to help us orginize because we are terrible with file cabniets and paper siting around. so we had some catching up at first but now we just put the recipts and documents we want to save for tax or filing purposes, in the scanner and press scan once in a while when we get a few minutes to fine tune some of the details and file them into easy to orginize folders.
i read alot of negative reviews. this thing doesn't do EVERYTHING for you but it does do just about everything. you just have to fine tune things.
the reciepts are almost perfect. it is the documents you need to punch in some details that will make it easier to retrieve while searching but other than that it scans quicklly and easily.6 out of 6 found this review helpful.

How did I live without it?5

1. I put the document, receipt, or ID card into one of the three guides, hit "Scan," and it feeds through.
2. Can save it in a folder that I label or go directly to PDF.
3. If I put the item in sideways so it fits into one of the guides, it creates a scan with the correct orientation. That was impressive.
4. The quality is excellent - good color matching and clear text.
5. Was easy to set up.8 out of 8 found this review helpful.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT1

I’m running Mac Lion OS.
While loading the software as instructed (without the scanner) it crashed 4 times.
I finally got a successful install and up graded the software.
I plugged in the scanner…and it crashed again.
I successfully plugged in the scanner after three attempts while the software crashed…each time it crashed I did receive a message that I could send the crash sheet to neatdesk (which I did numerous times).
I did scan two documents which was quick and displayed in the software.
While playing with the scans and learning the software another crash occurred.
I also could not find a way to archive the scanned data for retrieval after a failure without using the software.
I wrestled with this program for three days and became very frustrated. I had such high hopes of organizing my clutter, but, I took back the NeatDesk to Best Buy this morning.8 out of 12 found this review helpful.

I have been scanning years of docs/receipts to get rid of 3 file cabinets of papers - started on regular scanner: impossible! Realized I'd better give this thing a try and it has worked so well. It is fast, simple to use and has a great system to be able to find my info after the fact. I would recommend this to anyone, love it! My only disappointment was that they don't include a cleaning sheets in the box...that would be good! Customer service is excellent.12 out of 12 found this review helpful.
