Synopsis

An unlucky-in-love bachelor lands his dream date, but finds that getting through the evening will be a difficult challenge indeed in this romantic comedy. The Third Wheel stars Luke Wilson as Stanley, a woefully inept young man who -- with the aid of his roommate Mike (Ben Affleck) -- works up the nerve to ask out his alluring co-worker Diana (Denise Richards). Diana agrees, but before the two can even be seated at a restaurant, they literally run into a homeless con man named Phil (Jay Lacopo). Currying pity from the hapless Stanley, Phil proceeds to disrupt the evening in every way imaginable. One of the first films from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's production company, The Third Wheel languished on the shelf for more than three years; a similar, if less-severe, fate befell Wakin' Up in Reno, another Miramax-distributed comedy also directed by Jordan Brady. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

The Third Wheel: AMG Review

It's easy to see why The Third Wheel sat around, and then sat around, and then sat around some more on the Miramax shelves, despite the supposed pedigree of executive producers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Its chosen scenario is questionable enough, as a homeless con man (Jay Lacopo) repeatedly interferes with a first date between a regular guy (Luke Wilson) and his unattainable dream girl (Denise Richards). Learning that Lacopo wrote the script helps explain his own puzzling inclusion in the cast. But Lacopo's script also does what few movies are capable of -- it makes Luke Wilson, who usually has a Teflon screen persona, come across like a total jerk. Having spent the first 15 minutes enumerating the ways he's a sympathetic puppy dog loved by his peers, the script shatters this image by letting him come unraveled at the first signs of adversity. (And neither Wilson nor director Jordan Brady does anything to counteract these impressions). Even before meeting the con man, Wilson's Stanley has a near dust-up with a restaurant rose seller, so what comes across is not a likeable protagonist, but a slightly creepy obsessive at the end of his tether. It's even more problematic, then, that events do eventually point toward an unearned happy ending. The Third Wheel is ultimately revealed as just an exercise in fantastical farce, rather than something human-sized or relatable, when a variety of Stanley's officemates (led by a grinning Affleck) gather at a party to place bets on how long the date will go, getting updates via walkie-talkie from spies working in the field. If Good Will Hunting didn't already look like a fluke for Affleck and Damon, it sure does now. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
