In Theory: Theo Gersht, Avromie Summers (guitar); Sam White (bass guitar); Aaron Revivo (drums).Additional personnel: Barry Fasman (keyboards).By rights, this album should be reviewed by someone still in their teens, the audience at which this disc is aimed. Few adults will truly appreciate the charms of its simple melodies, catchy choruses, well-trodden relationship themes, and clich¿ riven lyrics. But this isn't an album for grown-ups, it's a record by kids for kids, substituting enthusiasm for experience, emotional reaction for insight, and lyrical obfuscation for wisdom. A drawback for older folks, but one that will ring true to the younger, who think and feel in exactly the same terms. The teen rebellion is obvious by In Theory's defiant stand against being labeled, even thought it's perfectly obvious that the band fall firmly into the pop-punk category, something that their brief excursion into classic rock on "Why Didn't You Come" doesn't negate. Yeah, adults will just find that attitude tiresome, as for the dilemma presented on "The Last Time," the more mature will just sarcastically respond, "The last time for what? They'll never do what again?" Young people will instinctively know what the band is talking about. And there you have it, another overexcitable group of kids, cracking out pop-punk fluff for tweens and teens. To mention them in the same breath as the Offspring with their incredibly clever and scathing lyrics, or Green Day with their authentic insights into adolescence is ridiculous. Someday In Theory may have the life experience to reach those group's heights, they certainly have the musical ability, but right now they're still as immature as their fans. Which just goes to show how incredibly clueless adult critics are, and why this record really should have been reviewed by a teen. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
