Get the Garmin instead!

Posted by: from Dallas, TX on 05/12/2012Have a trusty Garmin Nuvi 350 that suddenly quit picking up a signal. Decided to try the TomTom 1535 since the price was right. What a mistake! It's a nightmare to get this TomTom thing to follow a decent route. Finding routes is extremely sluggish. The TomTom takes forever and a day to lock onto GPS signals. Button presses in the TomTom user interface is very slow -- you definitely need to take a passenger along as a navigator just to operate the TomTom. Returned the TomTom. I'm sending my trusty Nuvi 350 in to have it repaired instead.

Posted by: from Central Texas on 04/25/2012I would buy this one again. We've really had no issues with it at all. As long as we've got an address to enter, it will take you wherever you need to go. I would like to have the option to find places while out and about though.

It worked once, but not twice (two separate units)

Posted by: from Potomac, Maryland on 04/21/2012It worked great, easy to use, but just once....turned it on next day, traveling to NY, but it could not pick up a signal. Frustrated, it was promptly replaced for a second unit at BestBuy...that did the same! It worked great the first time, but could not pick up a signal the second time. I read that there are some fixes available, mine will be to return it. I love TomTom, had older (working) versions, will stay with them until a new one is available.

Not quite ready for prime time...

Posted by: from SC on 04/17/2012I purchased two of these units, one for my vehicle/motorcycle, and one for my wife. I'm a previous Tom Tom owner (until it lost its ability to display a proper position) and my wife was a Magellan owner until her unit decided she was always in Puerto Rico. Out of the box, my unit couldn't find a GPS satellite if one fell out of orbit and landed on it. Pitiful. I checked the Tom Tom support site which clearly states there is a problem with the GPS reception of these particular units. I applied the recommended updates, or I should say, I tried to apply the updates. It took me three tries and approximately three hours. The first two attempts resulted in errors at 17% of load. Ended up having to call their support department - off-shored, of course - with the only resolution being "try it again". Nice. Well, third time was a charm, finally loaded all updates and hoped I would be good. Nope. I have the unit set to power up when it receives power. This is a great addition as my previous Tom Tom did not do this and I was always jealous of my wife's Magellan that did have this feature. Unfortunately, this only works about a third of the time. I've noticed when it does power up as desired, the unit works as expected. It locks on to the satellites quickly, pairs with my phone, etc., etc. At that point, I'm happy. Like I said, that's about 1/3 of the time. The remaining two thirds of the time, I have to press and hold the power button to force a reset. If the unit does not reset, it will power up, but it's back to its old tricks of not finding a satellite. My wife's unit updated easier than mine, which I thought would be a good sign. Unfortunately, her's displays the same behavior of not powering up reliably when the unit receives power. Again, if it doesn't power up as expected a reset needs to be performed before it knows that it's actually supposed to be a GPS receiver. Both of these units are going back to BestBuy tonight to be replaced with two Garmin Nuvi 2455LMT units.

Posted by: from Cleveland on 04/14/2012Great unit.I am a cable tech so i use it 6 days a week,8 t0 14 hours a day. It's accurate, easy to use, speaks street names, has voice recognition, lifetime traffic updates, lifetime map updates, reroutes you when there is an accident, and blue tooth for your phone.First of all,the voice recognition is surprisingly good,it very rarely doesn't understand what you're saying to it.I don't use the blue tooth too much, but the few times i did it was okay, but its not a phone,it's a gps so thats just a bonus if you ask me.I've had it a month and can't believe all the people giving it only 1 star.Notice most of them recommending a garmin after their post right, they're just hating. Also giving low remarks because of the bluetooth not working good for them, well its not a phone,so i won't even count that one. Then you have low remarks for it only working for 2 days, and it taking too long to find signal...Well,these things are mass produced,so every once in awhile you might get a bad one,but thats what warranties, and exchange policies are for...As far as it taking too long to find signal,30 to 60 seconds doesn't seem that long to me.Either way I would recommend this to anybody that asked what kind of gps they should get.My cable buddies are jealous because i can talk to it.....Stop looking at it and buy it already people.
