    Unable to D/L map updates
    1
Posted by: from Salisbury MD on 04/01/2013After two nights of working with TomTom tech support, I was unable to download the map update and ended up with "no map" on the device. I returned the TomTom and purchased a Garmin which had no problem with map update.

    Excellent Value

Posted by: from Douglasville, GA on 03/29/2013I have used the Mio, Navigon, Garmin, and now the TomTom. I did a side by side review on a drive yesterday with the Garmin 3590LMT and the TomTom 1605TM. The Garmin has more features and better Points of Interest coverage plus many Bluetooth capabilities and faster responses, but the bottom line is that the TomTom is more accurate. It is the only GPS able to find my doctor's office without leading me to a dead end. The Garmin said we had to drive 2 more miles as we drove past the entrance! The ETA was right on with the TomTom. This is why I use a GPS, for accurate navigation. Also, the Garmin does not display the street you are on but the TomTom does. The English voice on the Garmin was hard to understand, the TomTom offered 4 clear voices to choose from. I took the Garmin back to Best Buy! (Be sure to check online prices, Best Buy will match these)

Does exactly what I want it to, and more

Posted by: from Marlboro, Mass on 03/24/2013A friend had given me a 1st generation Tom Tom with a teeny screen, no traffic updates, but I loved it because it was accurate and took the worry out of getting you somewhere. I really needed a bigger screen and traffic updates, so I decided to upgrade on my Birthday. I drive similar routes every day, and it's easy to forget which one you are supposed to be on, so I use it everyday so I don't have to worry about it. When I mentioned the sometimes not on the mark destination wise, I've had a couple of issues when it said I had further to go than I did, with the result, I blew past the intended destination. I love the size of the screen and the clarity of it. The lane indicator is a huge help, especially in congested, unfamiliar areas, though sometimes I wonder why it doesn't happen at certain junctures that seem just as involved and complicated as the ones it does do it for, Oddly enough, I much prefer the left to right mounting method to the snap; I've only had two instances when the unit fell off; once when I was putting it on for the first time, the second when the mount wasn't exactly making full contact. It's great about changing directions when you do, and I'm starting to love the 'avoid certain streets' section. I do however, wish it had a 'no left turn when possible' setting as I'm a leftaphobic. That's just me though. I impressed a couple of co-workers the other day when it piped up and said "I have found a route that is 16 minutes shorter, would you like to use that?" #or something similar# and I pushed yes. A voice from the back said "I have a new Lexus and it doesn't do that." The only major issue I had in the beginning was figuring out what and where a POI in an unfamiliar area was. However, the solution was plain as day, and once I realized all you had to do was punch the 'info' button and it told you everything. I do wish there were more voices that gave you street by street directions, and said where your destination was, but I'm not going to worry about that. I do miss my Air Traffic Controller voice; he was calming and authoritative at the tame time, To sum up. A great value #I got it on sale for 169.00# it does exactly what I want it to do and more. I have yet to take it to a truly new and uncharted course, but a trip to Maryland is coming up soon, so that will be a test. As long as it gets me to the Tappan Zee bridge the right way, we'll be friends for life! Don't hesitate to buy this one! You won't be disappointed!

    Upgraded from a TomTom One

Posted by: from Mitchell, SD on 03/23/2013I've had this unit now for a few weeks and have taken it on two major trips. I live in South Dakota and the first trip was to Minneapolis, MN and the second trip was to Little Rock, AR. Here are the highlights of each trip: Minneapolis, MN Once we left home, for some reason the unit INSISTED on planning our trip on state highways instead of Interstate. I tried the "alternate route" and it was just a different back road route. I finally got the unit to see my way and everything was fine. I think I used the "Via" feature to get it to use I35. The unit would lose satellite contact once in the city on a regular basis. I also noticed it would lose contact once in a while when out in wide open areas. It would only last a few seconds, but when you are relying on the device for directions this can be rather nerve wracking. Coming home...same thing. It insisted on taking back roads. I left it on and listened to it try to tell me to take the next exit and turn around for miles until I just turned it off. I knew how to get home at that point. Little Rock, AR. The unit actually worked better around Little Rock although I had two glitches on the trip. I attribute this to the algorithms used. The first happened while finding my way to a point of interest. I had been there once before and I sort of knew where it was. The unit had me take a left turn at an intersection. Not until entering the road, I saw it was a college campus. The GPS took me through the college campus, to the road on the other side, a right turn on that road, a right turn at the next intersection and then brought me back around to the front of the store. From where I started, all I had to do was go up a half block to the stop light, turn left and go one block. WHY it took me through a college campus and around the block is beyond me... The second glitch was a little more serious and is the reason I do not trust these things. I usually take a paper map with me just to be aware of my surroundings, but had left it at home and spaced off buying another one. I was headed home and had stopped for gas along the route. I was on Highway 71 North. When leaving the gas station, I saw signs pointing to 71N in the left lane. The unit had me turn right at the corner instead. Keep in mind I needed to head into north and west directions. Out of curiosity, I followed the unit for a few miles to see it it would correct itself. It didn't. It wanted to take me 132 miles EAST. I stopped, turned around and headed back to where I knew 71N was. The unit instantly found its bearing at the intersection and had me go on my merry way. I could have seen the headline: "Man blindly follows GPS unit going home. Ends up in NY instead of SD from AR." While it sounds funny, people have blindly followed these things and gotten completely lost. My previous TomTom, (a ONE model, I believe), never took me on a wrong path like this one did. It seemed also to prefer mapping routes on Interstates. That is the reason I think there is something a little wonky with the algorithm TomTom is using to plan routes now. Overall I like the unit. I love the bigger screen and the better graphics. I just don't trust the unit as much as I trusted the ONE model. I also bought this unit for the lifetime map updates. And while it sounds redundant (sort of like rinsing the dishes before putting them in a dish washer) I would really recommend having a paper map with any GPS units just to be aware of where you are headed. You never know where you could end up...

Posted by: from New Hampshire on 03/22/2013I returned this item because it couldn't find my home address, giving a #99 for my location. I tried a friends house in another state, same result #99. I returned the item and bought a garmin, which was battery powered and could find my address.

Posted by: from Muncie, IN on 02/08/2013Traveling has gotten a lot easier with my Tom-Tom. I don't have to worry about looking at the map anymore -- the device tells me ahead of time when and where I need to turn.

Mediocre device & undependable customer service
    2
Posted by: from Miami, FL on 01/23/2013Device is okay. Screen is big and touch interface is responsive, though nothing top of the line or fast by any means. I bought my TomTom Via 1605 to be the replacement for the in-dash GPS I relied on with my other car. I'd hoped to be able to load a few "fun" voices to mix things up a bit. I'd see the TomTom site and clicked on a few before, so I thought I knew what I was getting between the device capabilities and user experience. Turns out, it didn't work out as expected. You can shop all you want and buy these extras, and TomTom will gladly make you pay for them. Whether those voices are compatible with your device is another story and this information isn't listed on their website. There's a 24 hour delay between replies, so don't expect any resolution with customer service that way. As it stands, after a week's worth of back and forth emails (one per day), my "request" that TomTom customer service provide me a list of the voices compatible with my device (since that information isn't provided on their site) was finally escalated to their "Senior Support Team." It's been five days now and nothing from them. If you need a GPS and find a super great deal or if this is the only one left and you need it...it'll get you where you need to go. If you want something that you can "make your own" and think that you can rely on TomTom to support its customers, buyer beware. Hopefully your experience won't mirror my own.

    Great co-pilot!

Posted by: from South Florida on 12/05/2012Lots of bells and whistles - great information once you figure it all out. Easy to read with the extra large screen and I love the speed limit notice - helps in unfamiliar territory and construction areas tremendously. Fast and easy updates keep the system righ ton top of new roads and changes which is excellent. Just make sure the stand is anchored securely on the mount pad- it has a tendency to not lock on the first time and fall off when you start to drive- and easy fix but not a good thing regardless.
