Great for student & home use
4
Posted by: from Lakeland, FL on 05/09/2012Had this for 6 months now. I'm a working mom & part-time student and this laptop fits my needs perfectly. I use it for school, using Office products & web-browsing. When we went on vacation, used an HDMI cable to hook up this laptop to the TV to watch DVDs. The Toshiba player crashed so we had to use Windows Mediaplayer instead. Haven't tried our 3D Blu-Ray movies on this laptop yet, but the Toshiba player said it would play it. What I don't like about this laptop are the slippery keys & the rough trackpad - the texture is reversed in all the other laptops I've considered. Also, I get frustrated that I have to press the FN button to use F5, etc. Granted, I understand it's barely used so rather have the other useful buttons instead, but I get condused after coming back from work using a pc keyboard. Otherwise, this is a very good laptop for my needs.

Great Machine! Touch Pad a little difficult
4
Posted by: from Kansas City on 04/29/2012Great computer for everyday use. I like the peformance and sound on this machine. Was looking for something with a Blue-Ray drive (player) and this machine fit the bill. Other reviewers have talked about only 4GB of memory. This machine has 6GB installed. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the keypad. Really "touchy"! It can do operations that you did not intend. I have fallen in love with the backlit keboard.

Toshiba E305 Series (BB Blue Label)
5
Posted by: from Metro Atlanta, GA on 04/22/2012This was my THIRD E-Series (BB Blue Label) system and I thought it was absolutely terrific... The Toshiba quality is/has been great through the entire E105 to E305 Series.. For a Student is it compact and powerful, the business user it is the perfect high performance computer. If you are a road warrior it is a no brainer. The Push to TV is supurb !!! So I give Toshiba and Best Buy High marks for this unit. The two year warranty is an exceptional value as well One little thing... It only comes with 4 GB or Memory and if you want 8GB get it pre-installed and make sure the Geek Squad does it or the warranty may be invalidated. Then make sure tha the Geek Squad put it back together corrrectly. Lastly, will I buy another unit in the series? YES !!!, I have purchased 7 in the series for myself, children, sister and everyone loves them even after several years of use. end.

Extremely disappointed
1
Posted by: from Houston, Texas on 03/30/2012I was looking for a new laptop to replace my 6 yr old laptop and hoping to find something that was more user friendly with some "bells & whistles". It was for only basic use - no games nor anything to sophisticated. The salesman kept pushing this Toshiba pointing out the main fact that it already had the capability of being able to view on my TV, (which it doesn'), whereas it would cost another $100 to make the others able to do this. ! I asked about the reviews - his shrug made them immaterial - I should have checked them. So far I have experienced every negative that the others stated. It does lock up! I'm not really picky on speakers - but these sound like the speakers are cracked - They are horrible! Sometimes the curser moves around & wipes out whatever I've typed. This laptop should be taken off the market! I unfortunately didn't experience all of the negatives before the 2 week return was up and I'm stuck with it. I should have went with the Apple like I wanted to even though it was more than I wanted to spend.

USB ports
4
Posted by: from Shrewsbury, MA on 03/08/2012USB ports are now used for everything! Why does this computer only have three? I filled those up immediately and had to go buy a hub. This is a throwback to computers from 10 years ago.

Too many issues - mine is a lemon
1
Posted by: from SLC, UT on 03/04/2012I purchased this laptop to replace my Dell. My son has a Protégé and it is great. Unfortunately this computer has been a pain. While there are some great features the problems have been so distracting that it is difficult to state the good. This laptop regularly locks up while online. It locks up when I connect to the Intel wireless display for the TV. The left shift key only works if you click it in just the right place. The touch-pad is awkward and jumpy. Just today the earphone jack stopped working - just get white noise. The features that I enjoy are the back-light keyboard and speed. The Intel option is great for football games; but it kept locking up, so we used my son’s for the games. Overall, it has been a bad investment for me and I will be looking for another computer.

Excellent For My Intended Uses
5
Posted by: from Greensboro, NC on 03/01/2012Had this laptop for over 1 month now. It's ran perfect from day 1. Never slowed down on me so far, even playing videos. The laptop gives good value for the money considering you get a hybrid hard drive and BlueRay player. Plus it has 6 GBs of memory. One specific reason I purchased this computer was because of the backlit keyboard. I will never buy another laptop without a backlit keyboard. This is my second Toshiba laptop and my first one gave no problems, but it's the backlit keyboard that has spoiled me. I do prefer the the 14" screen size also, particularly for having to carry the laptop so much for work. For the money I can find absolutely no fault with this laptop. I'd buy it again without reservations. (I can't comment on the touchpad as I don't use it.) I will add, to be fair, the speakers are lacking a little in quality and volume, but not enough for a negative mark against the whole computer evaluation.

Touchpad a nightmare
1
Posted by: from Chicago, IL on 02/15/2012This was a replacement for another Toshiba Satellite that I loved. The touchpad on this computer requires you to use one finger only and that takes twice as long as one finger on the touchpad and the other on the clicker. You also end up having having random applications being executed if you click and have a finger left on the touchpad. I am returning this.

Consider another laptop
2
Posted by: from Cedar Rapids, Iowa on 02/15/2012Right out of the box, during setup, the computer froze, and I had to restart it. Later on throughout the first 30 days the computer has frozen during crucial applications such as email or Word applications. I had to start over. This happens almost once per computing experience. I am considering taking it back to BBuy for another laptop.

Great Computer!
5
Posted by: from Motley, MN on 01/05/2012I bought this laptop on sale for $600. I got it home and was amazed how fast and easy it was to set it up. I have been very impressed ever since. It starts up really fast and does everything I need it to. I am wanting to upgrade it to 8GB of RAM because of my advanced use but it does great with 6 GB. It sometimes shuts itself down shortly after I turn it on but that is rare and only happens if I have accessories plugged in or a cd in the drive. But like I said, that is very rare. The back-lit keyboard is a great feature but it uses a lot of power. I only use the back-lit keyboard when I am plugged into the wall. Another great feature is the eco button that is right there and easy to start when necessary. The sleep and charge feature is really nice because I always have things to charge and don't always want to turn my computer on to charge them. The 14" display is great because you can see everything you need to and it makes it very portable. The keyboard is a bit flimsy, however. You can see it move down when you press keys in the middle of it. It doesn't affect the performance or anything it just is sometimes a nuisance. Summary: Great computer, good price (even when it isn't on sale), and does what you need it to do when you need it to do it. Very light and portable. Battery lasts a really long time, sometimes up to 6 hours!!!

CAUTION! BUYER BEWARE
1
Posted by: from Jackson on 01/01/2012I recieved this maching for christmas. To start I loved the easy setup, the ram, the impact smart harddrive, that and with a name like Toshiba you just think quality. WRONG! Toshiba should be ashamed of themselves for making a machine this bad. Day 1= wireless would cut in and out. Day 2= worked great no problems. Day 3= Impact smart harddrive software problems (had to call Toshiba to reinstall software) Day 4= Start getting errors about Proset wireless adapter software. Day 5= Take in into Bestbuy Geeks (told it was a "virus")about the wireless adapter. Was informed to do a factory restore. Done Now the real PROBLEMS start. When the maching would power on. Wireless would be disabled then it would take 5 to 10 mins of fighting with it to get the wifi to work. Take it back to the Geeks. They performed ANOTHER factory restore. Same problem. Looks like a software issue, but really a hidden hardware issue. Also VERY low quality speakers. Finally gave up and got something different for a lower price and higher quality. Shame on you Toshiba.

Great specs with touchpad quirks
4
Posted by: from Portland, OR on 12/30/2011Specification wise this is a great laptop. I purchased it during a sale for $600. It included the P2TV adapter and a copy of Kapersky. The internal specs on this unit are great. Good memory, bottom of the barrel I5 which is comparable to a high end I3. I like the smaller screens like this for portability. 7200 RPM hybrid drive and a BluRay disc player. All this can be hard to find in a $600 laptop. For that reason I would rate this unit 5 stars. A few Quirks. Ergonomically speaking there are a few quirks that are taking some getting used too. 1) The touchpad does not act normal. It has some different logic to it that makes this unit inconsistent with my other 3 laptops. You really have to do one finger at a time since the buttons are embedde in the touchpad. I am a 2 finger surfer one on the buttons and one sliding around and if you keep one on the button even the slightest movement will cause the cursor to change focus. Major user behavioural change for me. 2) The touchpad also has a very rough not slick surface. This causes friction when trying to move your cursor around. I am hoping over time that this will smooth out with some finger grime, but for now its like touchpadding on fine grit sandpaper. This is weird because the rest of the laptop chasis is very smooth. 3) And finally I was really anxious to try out the chiclets keyboard style and for the most part I love it, with the exception that the keys are piano black and very slick. In contrast to the touchpad I find my fingers slipping on the keys constantly. I really wish Toshiba had swapped this feel for the keypad and put a little texture on the keytops. The rest of the keyboard is great all of the important keys are exposed and the function keys have been hidden in as upper functions leaving the toshiba function exposed. I have not had too any issues with that, with the exception of F2 which I happen to still use for rename and insert. I am easily getting over this, Although these are strictly personal issues the keyboard and touchpad are a huge decision factor in my mind and I would have been willing to forego some of the high end specs for better ergonomics here. That being said ergonomically I am rating this a 2. P2TV. This is an interesting concept and I was excited to try this out as this was included with the unit for free. After a few required updates on the adapter I was able to get this to work. It works very flawlessly has a short range less than 20ft. After a month of owning this laptop I have not used it since. So I dont know where this technology will really fit in. I like to watch TV while I work away so..I'm glad I did not pay for that feature cool concept though. All that being said I am going to give this unit 4 stars primarily due to its internal specs.

Great Value, Great Specs, Quality Issues
2
Posted by: from California on 12/30/2011I got this for my wife for Christmas, it was a package deal, the Laptop came with the Netgear Push2TV adapter and Kapersky AV for 1 year, all for $600. The specs on the computer are excellent, the only thing it doesn't have that someone might want is Bluetooth, other than that it has it all, including (surprisingly) a 7200rpm HD. We have had 2 other Toshiba's and they were great, durable machines. Problems with this Machine: 1) RIGHT SHIFT KEY didn't always work- must push down extra hard to make it work. It's also unusually long, which is probably why it's having problems making contact. If you type a lot, this will be a big problem. 2) 1 Pixel already non-conforming (burns red all the time, noticeable) Not what you expect from a brand new machine at all. PROS: 1) Lighted keyboard, very nice, not found elsewhere 2) fast, feature packed. If this Toshiba didn' thave those two flaws it would be a great machine, but we were worried if we exchanged for the same machine we would get the same problems We ended up returning this bundle and paying more for the Lenovo U400....this machine is very slick looking, all one-piece alum case, basically looks like a MACBOOk, has a SLOT DVD drive, 750GB HD, Blue tooth, and a discrete graphics card (this toshiba did not any of those). I recommend checking out the Lenovo U400 as an alternate to this, only con is that it wont come with blue ray and you pay more...but it's much nicer looking and thinner, feels just like a MAC but costs le$$.

Excellent bargain. Watch out for bad apples

Posted by: from Toronto on 12/23/2011I bought this laptop before any reviews came online. It was an amazing deal for the money ($600) and it included a free wireless HD receiver and 1 year antivirus subscription. I didnt get to use the laptop until yesterday. After noticing the bad reviews, I decided to perform a thorough testing of all the functions. Problems: Backspace was not working properly. Laptop kept dying unexpectedly. Fix: I took it to the store and exchanged it for the same model. The current laptop is working fine. No problems with Backspace and random crashes. Actual review: Make sure that if you experience any problems, exchange the laptop right away. Dont bother to fix it because it's most likely a hardware problem (ie. motherboard issue most likely). The laptop is very fast. The screen is good, definitely better than my old HP laptop, however not as good as some people might want it to be. The wireless display is amazing. I love it. Probably the best feature... by far. The BluRay player is very good, but I do get some gaps (ie. no image, but you hear the sound) in the movies which are probably because of the software (WinDVD). Small incovenience: To access the function keys within windows (ie. F1, F2, F3,...) you have to hold down the FN + the key that you need to press. This is because Toshiba Keyboard utility is overriding the keyboard defaults with it's own functions.

Lots of features, but...
3
Posted by: from California on 12/14/2011I bought this laptop, but have since returned it in favor of the Samsung QX411-W01 laptop, which has many of the same features. The deal on the Toshiba seemed to be too good to be true. It packed in a TON of features, and I felt that, as I am planning to keep this laptop as long as possible, with the blue ray drive, widi, wimax, the i5 processor, usb 3.0, etc, etc, it would not become completely obsolete immediately. When I purchased the laptop, there were no reviews posted, but I felt that Toshiba was a solid brand, and they would not do me wrong. Here was my initial impression: PROs: Features, features, features. I set all the widi stuff up and, I have to say, it's cool. I felt that the computer was fast, although I'm coming from a 6.5 year old dell, so almost anything would seem fast. I later read, as reviews were posted, that many people had issues with the display quality and the touchpad. The touchpad was fine for me, but I was a little disappointed with the display. Somehow I expected more, but it was still quite a bit better than the old dell. The battery lasted quite long on eco mode. The backlit keyboard was also convenient at times. CONs: I noticed pretty quickly the “backspace” key wasn’t functioning like it should. Sometimes it worked great....and then sometimes I would have to punch the thing two, three, four, even five times before eliciting a response. It seems like a small issue, but as I create documents on the laptop for work, I NEED the keyboard to function properly. It was at this point I noticed that many of the reviews -- even the good ones! -- cited issues with the keyboards. I was afraid that even if I went in to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new machine of the same make and model, the new machine would still have keyboard issues. I made the decision to exchange the computer for the Samsung rather than getting a new Toshiba because the reviews on the Samsung were much better, and my brothers, who are much more tech-savvy than I am, agreed that the Samsung was probably a better purchase. Now, AFTER having set up the Samsung, I am realizing that the Toshiba was MUCH slower, and the display on the Toshiba was a good deal worse than I thought it was. The Samsung is much faster and has a much clearer display quality. The keyboard also feels better to me, although I think that may just be a personal preference rather than a construction issue. It also feels much more solid - like it’s something that could actually last me another 6 years. Of course, that may be a pretty wild conjecture to make, but it seems to be well made, and with widi, better graphics, usb 3.0, and plenty of hard drive space and ram, I can live without the blueray drive and backlit keyboard the Toshiba offered. Just to be clear, I’m not saying you should immediately go out and buy this Samsung computer - I haven’t had it very long, and you should do your own research to find what best meets your needs. However, it is worth saying that if the Samsung made the Toshiba appear slow and poorly constructed in comparison, you might want to take a second look at the Toshiba, and maybe look at some other options, before deciding to purchase it.
