Viper Remote Start System with SmartStart - Black (18 out of 24)
Love it

Posted by: from Kansas City, MO on 12/17/2012I've used this remote start system for over a year now, and have never had any problems with it. I've only used the included remote once or twice because I always use the iPhone app to start my car. The fact that you can see where your car is on a map in the iPhone app is also a cool feature. If your car were ever stolen, you could easily track it with your phone. Overall, it works great and I would recommend it to anyone.

Posted by: from Austin, TX on 06/25/2011I had the avital remeto start system and i loved it. It was easy to use and very basic. I had it for a week and it has a good antenna range. But sometimes, i could not use it becaUse of interference. Also, the module wiped the programming of my OEM remote. I had to go to the dealer and have it reprogrammed for $89.95 ea. + tax. I went to bestbuy and spoke to the most professional installer, Jeff. I have had asked him if i could just change it to a better remote start. He said it was ok. I was eyeing on the viper 5301 and 5701. But when i check the viper vss4000, i decided to go with this. Features are ok. I have it on my iphone 4. I setup an account wIth viper for $108.25 for 3years. It is too much but i think it is worth it. Now i can start, lock and unlock my car wherever i am. The iphone app made it a 2 way remote. Which is good. But with the basic remote that came with it was only one way. Total investment. Viper VSS 4000 = $400 Immobilizer = $160 ( inclunding labor) Trunk Release = $50 3years subcription = $108 Grand Total of = $777 (incl tax) I am very happy with my purchase. Thank you Jeff of Bestbuy South Austin. Jeff should be commended for his patience and hardwork.

Great!!!!......Once you learn the trick

Posted by: from Kansas on 02/12/2011I was a little nervous after reading about all of the trouble people were having with this system. Initially I had the same issues others were having where the command wasn't reaching the vehicle. This is when I learned the trick that fixed everything. There is a white circle in the top left of the app that rotates when you begin the app. This is the system logging into the smart start servers. Make sure you wait until this is completed. Once that stops and the circle disappears the app is logged in. You are good to go! After I learned that it doesn't matter what time I use the system, it works flawlessly!

Great idea, poor performance
1
Posted by: from Brooklyn Park, Mn on 02/12/2011The Viper remote start with SmartStart is a great idea, but has been an exercise in futility for us. The remote fob had to have been designed by computer geeks who teethed on Linux. The buttons on the remote activate from change in your pocket or pressing against the keys on the key ring. On the first day, it started my wife's brand new Sienna twice without my touching the remote. To fix this I had to reprogram the remote so the buttons were locked. After doing so, in order to open the right power door on her Sienna I had to enter the following commands; <fnct><unlck>;<unlck>;<fnct><fnct><aux> - 6 key presses. You have to pause after each press and wait for the remote to respond. There isn't a single time I've tried the above that it has worked the first time. My wife's first time with the Viper, she started her car with the remote. After it warmed up she walked out to the car and tried to unlock it using the factory remote. She couldn't get in, so she walked back inside, threw the keys at me, and told me what I could do with the new car. I ended up taking her to GM and buying her a new Acadia with a factory installed remote. The Sienna is now my car. I subsequently found out about the SmartStart module. I had it installed January 30th. It didn't work from day one. I called Viper Tech support. They wouldn't talk to me, said I had to take the car back to Best Buy. I set up an appointment for a week later. They replaced the SmartStart module. It worked from Best Buy to the house. Then quit completely for a couple of days. Now it works only when the car has already been running and is warm, and then it only works occasionally. SmartStart has never worked when the car is cold, either from my Evo or my Blackberry. Starting the car is easier and faster if you walk out to it and insert the key in the ignition than if you do the remote fob chicken dance several times before it works or waste your time waiting for the SmartStart app to tell you, "error in sending command" (evo) or "command not received at vehicle" (blackberry). I would not recommend this product. It's a total waste of money.

SmartStart Works
5
Posted by: from on 01/09/2011I initially was not too convinced this product would work after reading numerous reviews of servers not working or the remote start app on the phone was useless and being a little bit more expensive and my manufacture offering a remote start for 279$ this seemed like a bit of a risk. After 3 weeks of use I have not once had an issue with this product, I purchased it at BestBuy and it was installed in a few hours by their Geek Squad. I have used this night and day and about 30% of the time I am on a wifi network the rest is using AT&T's 3G network with the iPhone 4. Commands take at most extra 2-3 seconds to send over 3G but the second I receive a message saying the command was received to vehicle, it turns on! I would recommend this product for people planning to buy this kit. I am using an iPhone 4 w/ the SmartStart VSS4000(I dont know the difference between the VSS3000 and the VSS4000) and Subaru Legacy 2010.

Love it!

Posted by: from Minnesota on 12/15/2010I waited to review this because I like other people had some problems at the start. Day of install servers were down. After a couple of days the system started working the way it should and continues to work 99% of the time which in my book is more than acceptable. Don't be worried about the other reviews. It is to bad that the same people who are fast to put a product down aren't on here updating when things are fixed. One thing I have noticed on reviews I have read on the web is most users that are complaining are Iphone owners. I have nothing against an Iphone but we all know the carrier that they use and I for one know that ATT cell service is poor at best. Can't blame that on this product. I've had mine installed for over a month and besides the first couple of days it has worked great.(Verizon with Droid) I start my truck from my desk which is located 5 blocks away and with the temps in the winter in Minnesota this is worth every penny. Trust me folks this thing works! I might also add that I hardly ever give reviews.

Perfect for my needs!

Posted by: from Fort Wayne on 12/08/2010This remote start unit is amazing! Now that SmartStart works with Android, I jumped in and finally got this installed last week. I can't tell you how much easier it has made my life! I work at a huge manufacturing plant and I sometimes end up parking more than 1000 feet from the entrance. Until now, there was no system that would guarantee it would work at that distance. Some say they would "probably" work but may not if there are objects which interfere. Well, I don't throw money at "probably's". This system worked perfect from the first time and hasn't failed me since. Love it! Travis, the installer at the Apple Glen branch in SW Fort Wayne, should be commended for his mechanical talents and customer skills! I've got about 3 other coworkers nearly convinced in the system already.

Don't buy it for the iPhone app
1
Posted by: from Indianapolis, IN on 12/01/2010I purchased the Viper iPhone app starter based on proximity of my apartment to the parking lot. If I lived within a normal range of my vehicle I would have purchased a regular remote starter. Viper & Directed Electronics is a joke. This technology is great but the server is down CONSTANTLY and you never know from one day to another whether the application will actually be able to start your car, which is frustrating. You cannot reach anyone in their customer service or tech. dept. Just check their Facebook page-- read the constant complaints by their consumers and see their lack of communication on server issues. Avoid this if you can.
