Posted by: michael5b from washington state on 05/17/2013Being a novice beginner I am still learning how to use the unit. Trying to understand the instructions. The unit as a whole is attractive and seems well laid out. Speakers sound very good. I enjoy the functions and will enjoy it more as I learn it's capabilities. I haven't used any other keyboard so I can't offer a comparison. I haven't tried the MIDI feature as yet. Another attribute I will need to learn as time goes on.
Hope this helps. Thanks, M5

Posted by: michiganmichigan from michigan on 01/25/2013I'm 36 and I use to play as a kid. It made me start back taking classes after buying this for my son who has been playing for 6 years. Speakers are crisp and I love the feel of it. I haven't done anything Advanced on it yet like making a song.

Great Keyboard from Novice to Master
5
Posted by: acebbelt1 from Bensalem, PA on 07/05/2012I have had a little 61 key radioshack piano for 10 years and I felt like a lot of the songs I would play didn't sound the way they do off the album. I wanted a 76 key keyboard for under $300 and this was the highest rated from everywhere I looked. Best Buy didn't have it in stock so the associate ordered it and I picked it up from Best Buy 3 days after the purchase (which to me was pretty fast). I brought it home and was shocked and how rich the sound is. I love the portable grand button because no matter what you are doing once you hit that button it feels like you are playing on a grand piano. The soft-touch action feels accurate and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel like they are playing a piano without spending the money of a grand piano. The only negative is not even about the piano itself. I purchased the usb cable to connect my keyboard to my computer from another site and it took a week to get here but afterwards it hooked up just fine and the Yamaha software is SUPER EASY to install which was nice. 10/10 for this piano

Love the feel of the keys & MIDI output to Mac
5
Posted by: MIDImacorama from Raleigh, NC on 05/31/2012I was originally looking for a MIDI keyboard to use with Ableton Live and Garage Band on my Mac. Most inexpensive MIDI keyboards have a mushy key-press feel. I tried the Yamaha YPG-235 on the Best Buy showroom, and I had an immediate sense of it having a great feel. Having all the sounds onboard allows me to practice without my computer as well. The rotary dial allows for quick access to a whole orchestra of sounds, as well as sound effects, drums, and synths. You can also record multiple tracks inside the keyboards memory and play it back. From my previous research, most keyboard that do all this usually cost three times the price. The speakers sound quite good.
Regarding MIDI output: The included CD-Rom has the PC-drivers, but there are Mac drivers on the Yamaha website. I had to do a workaround to get it to work with my Intel Mac. Oddly, the drivers specified for this keyboard model only support the older "Power Macs" (I found this out by attempting to install hem - the website does not reveal this). I looked around the Yamaha website, and found that the higher-end DGX-640 model did have current drivers for the Mac (supporting Intel and OSX 10.7). Out of chance, I downloaded and installed that driver, and I lucked out! It worked for the YPG-235. I did need to put the keyboard in "PC-2" mode (not PC-1). I also had to adjust the sensitivity of the velocity in my software program, as the keys were coming in way to quiet. I'm so glad it worked, as I love the feel of the keys on this keyboard.

Posted by: Spaztik from on 01/04/2012Lemme start off by saying that I'm just a beginner player and I have only just scratched the surface of what I'm capable of. I can play a few songs with both hands, but I'm still pretty novice otherwise.
This keyboard is really big after only having a 61 key keyboard for a while, but I like the extra keys. The sounds are great on it too. There are lots of useful options too (including the ability to turn off the key sensitivity or choose from 3 other sensitivity settings). I bought this keyboard for the split piano but I was pleasantly surprised at all the other features of this thing (recording, dual voice, learning options). I can't be happier with my purchase.

Great low-end keyboard

Posted by: Reggi from San Fransisco Bay Area on 08/10/2011We needed a practice keyboard with a headphone jack so the "experimenting" outside of the actual piano practice did not drive the family crazy. It has a great sound when no headphone is used and is almost silent (except for some keyboard sounds) when the headphones are used. It also has a enough extra features to keep it interesting.

Posted by: from NC on 02/19/2011I purchased this keyboard and a casio wk500 both to compare them toe-to-toe. I ended up choosing the Yamaha. Both were great and a good deal for the price. The yamaha has great sound as always, and the touch sensitive keys work wonderfully. It has alot of familiar voices and styles for any of you Yamaha veterans out there. This keyboard is also compatible with every sustain pedal that I have tried. The main problem with this keyboard vs the casio is that this keyboard is a little more complicated to use. To change certain functions you have to press alot of buttons unlike the casio. Also this keyboard only has a headphone, sustain, and usb jack. It would be perfect if it had line-out and audio-input jacks like the Casio. Also you can't edit rhythms on it like on the casio. The main reason I chose this keyboard was because it was $50 cheaper than the Casio. And because the keys are just so much better than the Casio's. I honestly think that this and the Casio wk500 are evenly matched but of course the price differs about $50. I also feel that the Yamaha is alot more durable and the keys feel alot better as far as weight and tensity goes.
