fascinating and frustrating Posted by: from: on Stanley Kubrick had a few potential movies in the works when he died in 1999. One of these was a story involving an android child seeking to win the love of his human mother, based on a story by one Brian Aldiss. Kubrick believed that Steven Spielberg would be the ideal choice as the director for this project and they began collaborating on it on and off through the years. After Kubrick's death, Spielberg made the decision to direct and write the screenplay for the film as a way to honor his friend (hence its release in 2001). The pacing and the flow of the film, like that of 2001: A Space Odyssey, will be a turnoff for some. However, what cannot be denied is the brilliance of Haley Joel Osment as the android child, David. His journey to win his mother's love is an intriguing, even harrowing, one. Also fabulous is Jude Law as an android (described by one critic as a cross between the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz and Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange) who's on the run for a crime he didn't commit when he comes across David and agrees to help him. Many complained that the ending of the film was too sweet and upbeat, but look at it more closely and you'll realize that it's not very upbeat at all. This is a noteworthy departure from science fiction previously done by Spielberg (which would lead to the similar tone in both Minority Report and War of the Worlds) and, simultaneously, is a wonderful tribute to the great Stanley Kubrick.

Great photography, dull story Posted by: from: Sunnyvale, CA on 2 of 5 stars for the sci-fi movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Frankly, I'd give this movie a 1 of 5 stars, however, it is really well made with great photography and clean special effects, so it gets a 2 of 5. Set in the future where a company made a mechanical boy. The kid who played the robot did a good job. The story is insanely dull and excessively long at 2h25min. If they cut about 1h from the movie it would be OK and get a higher rating. Sorry, I do not recommend this movie; BTW, I lasted 1h30 before quitting for something else.

too long Posted by: from: on This movie was very long and drawn out to me. It could've got the point across in a shorter amount of time. There are many many more movies out there that are more time worthy.

Alright Posted by: from: Grand Forks, ND on I think they dragged it on too long. The idea was good but it should have been shorter.

Weird and wonderful Posted by: from: on A strange and deliberately-paced sci-fi film, with terrific performances from Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law. Transfixing and wonderful.

Entertaining and thought-provoking Posted by: from: California on The blu-ray looks and sounds great - highly recommended for fans of the film. As for the movie itself, I really enjoy it, but it always leaves me feeling kinda depressed after a viewing. I don't know if the movie's ultimate message is hopeful or pessimistic. I guess it's up to the viewer to decide...

A.I. a Classic!!! Posted by: from: Mililani, HI on "A.I" is such a great movie made by Spielberg. This film has such a great story that is entrancing which will keep you glued to your seat. The acting and chemistry between Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law was fantastic. The futuristic setting of "A.I." was amazing and all the characters within this world was phenomenal. This is actually one of my most favorite films by Spielberg. There's not much else I can say about this movie, other than, that "A.I" is a really really good movie and I highly recommend it as a must-see. p.s. I hope it comes out on Blu-ray! =)

A.I. - old school story, modern take Posted by: from: Los Angeles, CA on A.I. is a blend of old school story telling and a more modern world issue of the struggle of the basic notions of the human condition and that of innocence. Without ruining the story for others, it is a story of a android boy and his quest to be loved. The greater story reflects how man's humanity has gotten lost through the world we have created. A.I. is a story that should appeal to younger age viewers and adults. It is not a typical fantasy story or sci-fi. It is a story about love, the need to be loved and the sacrifices made through life's journey of one little boy who just happens to be an android. The original filming of this movie is somewhat stylized and while it transfers reasonably well to DVD, it almost 'suffers' when brought to blu-ray as that hi rez goodness doesn't add much to the presentation of 1080p due to the nature of the original filming. However, this should not deter anyone from getting this well crafted humanist story. The audio is excellent and there is just a slightly better nuance to the visuals than the DVD version. Overall, it is not eye candy like some other movies (Lord of the Rings trilogy comes to mind) but certainly is not distracting either. The movie itself is usually a love it or hate it movie. I find those that love it are less about being entertained and find the story a reminder of our own struggles and the human condition itself. Those that did not like it found the ending to be somewhat trite and preferred a less low key and melancholia nature to the film. I am gad with my purchase and most likely will purchase for a couple of friends of mine who enjoyed watching it at my place and remarked they never seen a movie quite like this and they thoroughly enjoyed it. No one commented on the less than stellar look of the movie in blu ray.
